Thompson Genealogy: The 1940 Huntsville Hornets

The 1940 Huntsville High School Hornets

My grandfather George Avner Baldwin was Captain of his high school football team in his senior year at Huntsville High School in Huntsville, Texas (jersey #31 in 1939; jersey #11 in 1940). After losing their first two games, the team went 9-0 while capturing the district and bi-district titles along the way before losing the regional game to French High School (Beaumont). The team was ranked #8 in Southeast Texas for the year and scored 5 consecutive shutouts mid-year. My grandfather was a running back but also seemed to do some punting and was quarterback in his junior year. He won the Roy Sandel Trophy for the outstanding Huntsville Hornet player and was selected to the Third Team of the Houston Post All-Southeast Team for 1940.

His sister, Mattie Louise Baldwin, put together a scrapbook for him that contained newspaper articles and pictures from that wonderful year. The scrapbook was reworked using the original newspaper articles and pictures by my mother Margaret Ann Baldwin around the year 2000. She gave it to him to keep in the nursing home until he died in March 2000. In July 2006, I tried to digitally preserve the articles and photographs and also make copies to physically preserve them and put together another copy of the scrapbook for the genealogy. This web page pulls all of the digitized articles and pictures into a central, easily accessible location.
