Information varies from list to list -some have names and some just total sums-Glasgow has only sum no names

includes:
Poll taxes were imposed in 1694, 1695 and twice in 1698 to pay off the debts and arrears of the army and navy.
Payment was graduated at the rate of 6 shillings and upwards according to rank and means; only the poor and children under 16 were exempt

Hearth Tax 1690 Parliament granted a tax of 14 shillings on every hearth in the kingdom
payable by both landowners and tenants to raise money for the army.
Only hospitals and the poor living on charity from the parish were exempt.
Collection dragged on for several years until August 1694 when a proclamation
called for all hearth lists to be sent to the treasury before 1 October.

PROPERTY Scotland

farms were usually let under a mutiple tenancy system so several names may be associated with a property at any given time
"of" = landowner, "in" = a tenant, no preposition = usually a cottar or farm labourer
A landowner in Scotland is traditionally known as a laird.
A local estate owner, he would have provided work for some of the local people on the estate and in his house
and would have rented out some of his farmland to tenant farmers
Lord may be a different form of the word laird, but it is a title granted by the sovereign
portioner The proprietor of a small estate or piece of land resulting from
the division of an original forty merkland among co-heirs or otherwise, a small land-owner
feu ferm or feuferme The tenure of land or other property in feu.
feu The tenure of land in perpetuity in return for a continuing annual payment of a fixed sum of money to the owner of the land; a tract of land held in fee.
fiar The ultimate and absolute possessor of a property as distinguished from a life-renter of it; one who has the reversion of property
Labor in the countryside was supplied by four groups of people--
(1) the tenant who owed labor services to the master of the ground;

(2) the cottars who were settled on the fermions, each with a cothouse or cottage and yard; Cottar or cottars= Cotters occupied cottages and cultivated small plots of land
(3) the unmarried laborers, of then the relatives of tenants and cottars; and
(4) a group of skilled workers such as ploughmen, barnmen or threshers, shepherds, sawyers, and limeburners; and some of these needed alternative work out of season.

John Nisbet born about 1776 in Scotland illegitimate son of John Nisbet (later called Col John Hamilton of Pencaitland, Dechmont, and Winton) of Dirleton received his education in London which the Nisbet family paid for as well as for his education and clothes. He was sent to sea and probably to the East Indies Services. Alexander Begbie in London acted as his "Guardian and sent letters and Bills to the Hamilton/Nisbets of Dirleton, and he was well provided for. Sometime between 1800 and 1806 he disappeared, In 1806 at a request from the Hamilton/Nisbets to Mr Begbie as to his whereabouts he is not to be found. He owed �300 to a Capt Christie with whom he sailed

Among my Nisbet ancestors there was a couple of generations that were Quakers John Nisbet born bef 1678 and his son John lived in Glasgow area Scotland

James Nisbet that married Nancy Taylor is definately not son of Archibald x Elizabeth Hogg of Greenholm
Their son James c 6 Jul 1737 died probably unmarried definately without issue before 1788 as 1 Feb 1788 Sasine NAS RS14/32/34 says "David Nisbet brother German nearest and lawfull heir to deceased Robt Nisbet of Greenholm" nearest and lawfull heir means any older brothers he had were deceased and did not have issue

Chart and pedigree by John Nisbett Dowling he meant this line came from Dalziel
                                   but I have a problem with his research among others he has
                                   John b ca 1623 and Henry b ca 1628 as sons of Henry Nisbett married to Catherine Gray
                                   neither of these are among Old parish register baptisms for this couple and
                                   they had a child every second year in this period so I would say this eliminates them as parents
                                   of above Henry and John (will check out rest of this line at a later date)
