History of the Counties of Ayr & Wigton Scotland by James Paterson
Cunninghame
Nisbet of Greenholme

Nisbet, author of the Heraldry, who himself the representative of the ancient family of Nisbet of that Ilk, in Berwickshire, states that “Nisbet of Greenholm, a family of a good old standing in the shire of Ayr, “are descended of Nisbet of that Ilk.”

It is not known at what time the Nisbets acquired the property of Greenholme.
The first we find recorded was “Johnne Nesbit of Greenholme,” who grants a discharge, 1576 (ref: Mason’s notes)
He was probably succeeded by a brother, James Nisbet of Greenholme, who died before Nov 1578

Alexander Nisbet of Greenholme. He was served heir, 25th November, 1578, to Margaret Nisbet, eldest sister, and the other heir portioner of the late James Nisbet of Greenholm,
in the 40s land of Greenholme, with the mil, granary, and fulling work (fullanario); the 40s land of Myhlnrig; the 20s land of Sorne; and the 30s land of Sornehill, of old extent, &c,

Alexander Nisbet of Greenholme is the next we meet with, and may have been the son of Alexander. He was one of the cautioners of Hew Campbell in Mauchline, who was charged before the criminal court, for being concerned in the slaughter of John Glencorse of that Ilk, 14th February, 1606. His name occurs repeatedly in the testamentary documents from 1603 till 1618. He appears to have married Margaret Lockhart, probably of the neighbouring family of Bar, who died in February, 1612. Her testament and inventory were “ ffaythfullie maid and gevin vp be the said Alexr., in name and behalf of William and Mareonne Neisbets, lauchtfull bairnes to ye defunct, and executours dative,” &c.

Robert Nisbet of Greenholme, who by his wife, Barbara, left issue six sons and four daughters (ref: Monument of the Nisbets of Greenholme in Galson Church)

Archibald Nisbet of Greenholme, the eldest son, was born 6th October 1689. He married, in 1727, Elizabeth, daughter of Hogg of Harcarse, by whom he had five sons and seven daughters. His wife died 23d August, 1756, aged 46 years. He himself died 25th September, 1743, aged 75 years. The monument in Galston was erected by their fourth son, David.

The property had been alienated from the family some years previously.

(footnote Arms-Argent, three boars’ heads, erected, within a bordure, sable Crest-A boars’ head as the former Motto-“His fortibus arma” (Captain Nisbet of Hardhill-a memoir of whom is given in the Scots Worthies-though not immediately connected with the Greenholme family, was no doubt, an off-shoot from it, as were also the Nisbet of Braidlie, Scheills &c There was a William Nesibet, minister of Tarbolton, in 1626))

The author of the Heraldry mentions Nisbet of Carphine as descended of this family. Also “Mr Alexander Nisbet, chirurgeon in Edinburgh, who carried, argent, three boars’ heads erazed, sable, within a bordure inverted, gules, for an difference.”

James Nisbet, sometime in Feouch, and his wife, had a charter of the lands of Ladytoun, Overmuir, &c, in the county of Ayr, dated 2d February, 1633. The name still prevails in Ayrshire, though the main branch have long been removed.

1519

Instrument narrating that John Camble of Litill Sexnock, depute of the Sheriff of Air, gave to the notary a precept of sasine from the king under the quarter seal, obtained and presented to him by James Nesbyt, son and heir of the late Robert Nesbyt of Grenholme, which precept the notary received, opened and read and after reading, John C, gave sasine to the said James N.  of the 20s lands of Grenholm, the 40s lands of Auchinruglene, the 40s lands of Sornehill, the 40s lands of Mynrig and the 40s lands of sorne upon which Murdoc Nesbyt, tutor and governor of said James N. a minor asked instruments. * indicates line accepted by Lord Lyon in 1957 as per Nisbet Narrations.

1 A very weathered headstone in Raphoe graveyard, Co Donegal, with whole lines missing states "Jean Hamilton wife to James Neesbit…..1624 ……….died 1 Feb 1679…also John & Andrew their sons who died 1645 and JA Neesbit grandson to the said John died 26 Feb 1696." With so much missing at the beginning, it is hard to cipher the family history.

2 Nisbet Narrations states his tombstone indicates he died "age 50" which would make his birthdate 1743; according to the Galston Parish records he was christened in 1737. Is this another case of mistaken identity?

3 submitted lineage to John Campbell, Lyon King of Arms in 1787; then residing in London. It was not registered.

4 Nisbet’s Narrations

5 married son of Walter from the Carfin line which established Nisbet Plantation in Nevis, West Indies.

Galston Church, Ayrshire:

The new church (built 1808) occupies the site of the old, and is surrounded by the ancient burying-ground. In the interior of the church,……on the east wall of the galleries, to the right on entering from the staircase, is a handsome mural monument to the memory of an illustrious native of Galston, Lt. Col. Hutchinson; and to the left is another design of the same school, bearing a long record of the births, marriages, and deaths of the ancient but now extinguished family of Nisbet of Greenholme.

"Sacred to the memories of Archd. Nisbet of Greenholm, Esq., descended of Nisbet of that Ilk, eminent in King David the First’s reign, 1126, eldest son of Robert and Barbara Nisbet, who left issue six sons and four daughters. Born 6th Oct 1689; married Elizabeth Hogg, 6th August 1727; died 25th Sept. 1764, aged 75 years. Had issue five sons and seven daughters by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Hogg of Harcarse, who died 23rd Aug 1756, aged 46 years. Also Ann, their daughter, born 1 Nov 1732, died 20 Aug 1749, aged 16 years."

"Sacred also to the memories of David Nisbet, MD, youngest son of Robert and Barbara Nisbet, born 10 July 1703; married 2 Sept 1736, the eldest daughter of Sir Thomas Rinton, died 29 March 1773, aged 70 years, leaving no issue.
