Russell, Edwardsville, IL (10 years old, Diptheria). OBITUARY FT. RUSSELL, IL
NOV 3rd, 1886: Died at noon, Monday, November 1st, 1886 BIRDIE M. daughter
of CHRISTIAN P. and FRANCIS KIESER SMITH. Birdie was a bright, yes one of the
brightest and loveliest of girls. About three weeks since she had a severe attack
of diphtheria, terminating in congestive chills. She was given up to die, and
she wished to go to her little sister, Dora, who had preceded her to the grave
a few days before. Nevertheless she recovered, but on Sunday paralysis overcame
her, and she remained in that condition until death relieved her at 12 o'clock,
Monday the next day. Birdie was uncommanly bright, possessed of noble qualities
for one of her years, attracting the general attention of all who knew her, by
whom she was greatly beloved and esteemed. It can truly be said of this little
girl that our loss is Heaven's gain. Birdie was ten years old on the day she
