Names of ships emigrants traveled on were very seldom known
beforehand in the early days. Emigrants left mainly from Rotterdam (some
from Amsterdam) and sometimes had to stay there for days or weeks in
boarding houses near the quay side to wait for a ship that would take them.
In later years it became more organized and one could book the ship
beforehand and local authorities duly register the name of the ship,
when it left etc. In 1888 the following Holland America Line ships were
leaving from Rotterdam : Rotterdam, Maasdam, W,A. Scholten, P.Caland,
Schiedam, Amsterdam, Edam, Zaandam, Leerdam, Veendam, Obdam, Werkendam,
Spaarndam. In 1888 about 10,000 emigrants left Rotterdam. Two thousand of
those were of Dutch nationality.

Descsription of VillageTermunten, by Sjouwke Nube-Wolters who lives in Gieterveen, Gronnigen, Netherlands, a friend of James Mossel & his wife Nina, . "A sweet little fishermane's village, it has a very tiny beach with dikes, really Dutch and cozy. No mountain. In the summer it is very hot so people go to the shore to cool down. In Termunterzijl, even smaller than Termunten, they just made a large hole in the ground, and fill with natural (rain) water, with a man to clean and sell ice-creams. It is really a refreshing sweet place."

Located a Mr. Able Tjapke de Jonge of Annen, County Gronningen, Netherlands. His wife's mother was a Mossel. They had no children. His wife's name, Martje Gorter. She died in 1997. His wife's mother's name, BARTELINA MOSSEL. She still lives in 1998. He had a record of Berend and Klaassine and their three children, Kathrine, Grietje (little Grace), and Jan (John). He never knew what happened to them. Was able to tell him BEREND KOENES MOSSEL and family went to America. Mr. de Jong speaks not a word of English. Sent him a copy of Berend Koenes Mossel family down to MARISSA MOSSEL, daughter of Kevin L. Mossel and wife Brooke Howell Mossel.

Description of MOSSEL FAMILY by MR. Able de JONG . He was married to a Mossel.
Not very tall, dark hair, large noses. Mr. de Jonge started investigating the family history with his wife because many thougth the family might be (Jood) Jewish. He never could prove this. Lots of Jewish-like noses until today in Mossel family They also have a "good nose" for earning money. Through the ages, until present day, most of them have had a job, and in spare time they buy and sell, or do whatever they think of to earn "pocket money." His Mossels love alcoholic drinks. Their hair turns fully white when old, not grey. Most of them lived very long, lots above 90, some close to 100 years.

Berend K. Mossel was married to Klaassien Vondeling Mossel and they had Katie, Grace and John in The Netherlands before coming to the U.S. Berend and Klaasien had two sons born in the US (Enos and Frank) that died. Both are buried with Klaasine and Berend in Secton X, Lot 27, Riverside Cemetery, Kalamazoo, MI.
Ellen's four children (Winnie, Minnie, Wilfred & Herbert) are from a previous marriage to George Bodine. (Possibly in Cheshire, MI as Ellen and all of her children were born in Cheshire) The child that is referred to as the one not living (# 9) is possibly hers and George Bodine's.

He was a Self Employed, Truck Farmer, 70 + Acres in 1914. He resided at Potterville and Charlotte , Windsor Township between 1914 and 37. Potterville and Charlotte are 6 miles apart both in Windsor Township.
It is very possible that Berend Koenes Mossel family never moved from one farm to another. The address differences between Potterville and Charlotte, Windsor Township, Eaton County, MI is possibly due to change of Post Office name but not actual change of physical place. MR. MOSSEL, WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, DIES IN GRAND RAPIDS
Berend K. Mossel, 76, a resident of Windsor Township over 31 years, died Monday at the home of his cousin, Dick Mossel, in Grand Rapids. He was born in the Netherlands. The funeral services were held at the Pray funeral home Tuesday at 10:00am and at Kalamazoo in the afternoon with burial there. (Riverside Cemetery) He leaves the widow, Ellen; a son, John, Santa Monica, California; three daughters, Mrs. Katherine Gahide, Kalamazoo, MI; Mrs. Winnie Lundberg, Jamestown, NY; and Mrs. Frank Lonnon, Louisville, KY; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Outside of the County
Since Berend K. Mossel was in Grand Rapids when he died, his death certificate was sent back to EATON COUNTY (his place of residence) to be registered there also. Was told the death certificate is filed in "foreign deaths," because he died out of the county. As of 1998 no documentation has been found to indicate he became a U.S. citizen. He died of.
