How can I describe my Grandma Davis?.............She is a gracefull lady.....One who never settled for anything less than her & her family had to........One who would never let her family be poor.......One who would never let her Grandkids starve......One who would always cook (Allan) Jim mashed potatoes when ever he wanted her too......One who would make Andrew banana pudding with vanilla wafers when ever he wanted it .......One who would cook for an army (or two ,or three, or four) each and every time she cooked.....One who would make home made ice cream whenever we wanted it .........One who was always making home made jelly.......One who would feed the deer in her backyard ......And then couldn't keep them out of her peach trees......She loved planting flowers in the garden ......She loved her rose bushes so much.....She loved to sit and talk to you no matter what you had to say .......She was always willing to help.......Her and Renee would always clean house and watch Days of Our Lives together ......She was always so proud of her son,my dad........And she always loved my mother so very much ......She was a grand lady who was as tough as they come... She had to be because she was fighting an uphill battle all the way......Tonight, January 24th, 2002 the Davis family lost a wonderful and proud mother, a loving wife, and the most loving, caring,grandmother I have ever known. I ask you Lord to please take her into your loving arms where she will struggle no more...Where she can breathe as deeply as she wants.

The beautifull Margret Davis will be missed terribly,but will be loved and carried in our hearts forever.

Parents: William Fredrick VOGT and Lilly May TALLEY.

She was married to Jesse Harold DAVIS on 8 Jul 1949. Uncle Harold and Aunt Margaret

They met in the lettuce packing sheds of California...
They started with “deficits galore.”
No education, no supporting family.
No occupational training.
Two little girls already to care for.
A family scene from “Grapes of Wrath.”

24 Nov 1924
Jesse Harold Davis;
Age 1 year, 3 months, 24 days.
The Davis family had recently left Arkansas looking for work.Uncle Harold’s father was killed when he was one year, three months and 24 days old. His mother was expecting their fifth child. One little girl had already died.

11 June 1925
Jesse Harold Davis;
Age 1 year, 10 months, 11days.
His little sister, Johnny Ruth Davis, was born five months and thirteen days after his father’s death.

15 Feb 1927
Jesse Harold Davis;
Age 3 years, 6 months, 15 days.
Uncle Harold’s Mother remarried two years, two months and 21 days after the death of his father, one year and eight months after the birth of her last Davis last child.

3 Nov 1927
Jesse Harold Davis;
Age 4 years, 3 months, 3 days.
Uncle Harold’s Mother, Lillie Grace Ferguson Davis, dies of Typhoid Fever. She had a miscarriage prior to her death.

The first four years of Uncle Harold’s life
was spent with family moves while looking for work; The trauma of a Father’s tragic accidental death; A Mother without insurance or education to care for her family; The emotional neglect of a mother who lost her husband, was expecting a child and had no means of supporting herself or her children; The birth of a little sister in the midst of deep family mourning; Moving from family member to family member with his Mother and siblings; His Father’s oldest son, Charley Davis, leaving as they looked for work; The remarriage of his Mother; The death of his Mother. His siblings being split up and “farmed out” to whoever would take them.

I was once told after the death of Uncle Harold’s Mother, “things were bad.”
What were the first four years?

Uncle Harold and Aunt Margaret stayed married for over 50 years. They lived in neighborhoods they couldn’t afford so their kids would have the best security they could give. They worked hard at everything they did. Aunt Margaret was Uncle Harold’s partner in success against all odds. Aunt Margaret and Uncle Harold’s five kids are living proof of a partnership that was not content to find excuses in the environment. Children were: Belinda DAVIS, Harold Wayne DAVIS, Wendy Warren DAVIS.

Children were: Carol NEWSOME DAVIS, Shirley NEWSOME DAVIS.

bullet Alberts Alberts VONDELING was born before 1801 in UNKNOWN. Located with the marriage papers of Alberts and Eltje (on michrofiche in Netherlands) there was this sad story. The paper was torn already when the fiches were made, and the writing is very hard to read.

In 1802 a woman was begging on the streets of Delfzijl, a village North of Termunten. One day she was found dead at the side of the road, with her little baby son in her arms. Some people thought she called herself Elisabeth, no surname was known and no one knew where she came from. in that time in such small places everybody knew each other, and also knew everyone from surrounding villages (mostly they still do in our days 1998). So she really was from a distant place, maybe even from abroad. In Delfzijl is a harbour to the Northsea, on Dollard Bay, maybe she got off the boat, we will never know. Maybe she ran away for something.....
The baby was taken care of by the church, they raised him and gave him education, food, clothes, until he was old enough to take care of himself. His signature on his military paper, shows he could write very well. Especially for those days and poor people.

Alberts Albert Vondeling (b. 1801) married Eltje Aijkes
Jan (John) Vondeling (b. 1833) married Trientje (Kathrine) Bottinga
Klaassien (Clausine) Vondeling(b. 1863) married Berend Koeno Mossel He was adopted in 1802 in Termunten, Groningen, Netherlands. Adopted: Perhaps the man who found or raised him was named Albert. Vondeling means "found" in Netherlands. The church adopted him (Alberts) after he was found, on the street, in the arms of his dead mother, who was a stranger in the village Termunten. Termunten, Gronningen, Netherlands).

Baptism: Because the mother had died, they didn't know weather he was baptised alaready, but in those days most children were baptised right after birth, for they often died at a young age. So perhaps the church assumed he would have been already baptised when they found him with his dead mother. He died on 23 Dec 1860 in Termunten, Groningen, Netherlands. Albert died in Termunten, County Groningen, Holland 6 months after his wife Eltje died. He served in the military in Not called to service. Military: On the military paper behind the date of Birth: ...1801.It appeared when he was found and adopted they decided he was about a year old, but did not give him a birthday. Parents: Unknown
Place of Birth: Unknown

He was not called to military duty.

On the military paper is, as ususal, a description of Alberts looks. (on microcfiche in Netherlands) This one is torn and it is very hard to read. Somethings however can be read. Chin, round, mouth broad, nose ordinary, hair brown, face skin smooth. He attended in Alberts could write very well, especially for those days & for poor people.. He was named for Albert Alberts, perhaps after the person who found him and raised him in the church.. He Died at 60 years old.. Parents: Unknown UNKNOWN and Elisabeth UNKNOWN.

He was married to Eltje AIJKES on 4 Jun 1825 in Termunten, Groningen, Netherlands. Marriage: With the marriage papers (on microfiche in The Netherlands) is the information below:

Albert and Eltje married with "Acte van Onvermogen" which very poor people got from the authorities. Then they wouldn't have to pay for the marriage license and papers needed (birth certificate, etc) They must have been really poor indeed when they got this.

With ELTJE AIJKES marriage notice was noted that her name was changed from ELTJE AIKES JONAS TO ELTJE AIJKES, why was not said. With her marriage papers there were 2 death certificates. One, AIKO JONAS (perhaps her natural father?) died 24 Feb 1812 and one, LIEBE ELTJES died 9 March 1804. (Liebe sounds very German) Located with the marriage papers of Alberts Albert Vondeling and Eltje Aijkes (on michrofiche in Netherlands) there was this sad story. bullet Klaassien "Clausine" VONDELING was born on 1 Mar 1863 in Termunten, Groningen, Netherlands. According to FAMILY ORAL HISTORY: "Clausine was an orphan, she was found on the roadside." Vondeling means "found" in the Dutch. When the michrofiche reconding her parents marriage was located in the Netherlands the story below was found.
CLAUSINSE WAS NOT AN ORPHAN, but it's easy to see where the true story came from.
