Rev. Sparks married Eliza McFarland July 16, 1833, in Williamsport, PA. They had two children, Sarah Anne and Robert. In 1836 Eliza, with Samuel's help, made the above quilt for her daughter, it would have been considered a wedding quilt. A wedding that Eliza would never see.
Robert was born April 5, 1837 and died August 2, 1837 in Athens, Ohio. The family for unknown reasons, perhaps to be with family in Pennsylvania or to be near better medical care moved back to Pennsylvania right after Robert's death. Eliza was to die in Pennsylvania on August 6, 1837, just 4 days after her son.
Samuel raised his daughter, Sarah in Pennsylvania. He was a pastor at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Minersville, PA. Sarah married Dr. William Henry King, of Monongahela, PA, on August 2, 1854. And I am sure the quilt was passed on to her at that time as it has been handed down mother to daughter since. The quilt is now in the possession of my sister, Joyce S.
