Descendants of William S. Hicks

Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM S.1 HICKS1,2 was born March 1879 in Virginia. He married IDA E. OWENS3,4 1898, daughter of MR. OWENS and NANCY OWENS. She was born April 1880 in Virginia.

Notes for WILLIAM S. HICKS:

Per the 1900 Wise County, Virginia census:

He was out of work for 3 months that year. He lived next door to George and Callie Hicks and their children. Very close to them also lived Henry and Alice Hicks and their children.

May have passed away before 1930 as he is not listed in the Wise or Scott county census, nor is he listed in the Harlan county census.

Per the 1910 Wise County, Virginia census:

THE HICKS FAMILY OF RUSSELL COUNTY (researching possible relationship since some of these did move to Scott County at some point)

By Roy L. Sturgill

There were two branches of the Hicks family in Russell County in its early years and possibly before its formation in 1786. They were not related as far as this researcher has been able to find.

In the records of Russell County can be found many transactions by Claiborne, Nathaniel, Elias and other Hicks'. There was a Reuben Hicks, but records are hazy concerning him, since most early records were destroyed by fire.

It would appear that Claiborne and Nathaniel, (who were possibly brothers) and Elias contributed the most to the history of Russell County.

Somewhere it is written by the ancients: "That the whole human specie is to be regarded as one common family, the high, the low, the rich and poor, all created by the same Almighty parent are placed in the world to aid, support, and protect each other." How true it is that it takes all these to make history. The Hicks family have played their part in this drama so well, they have rightfully earned their place in the history of their beloved county.

The Hicks family of which I write were not rich in money, land and other worldly goods, nor educated as we think of education today. But they were wealthy and educated in so many other ways. They lived it seemed, for the good they might be to others. Walking miles to sit up with the sick, work the crops of their ailing neighbors until they were on their feet, and if necessary dig a final resting place for them and drop a tear at this passing. They were rich in the ways to survive in primitive surroundings, how to cure and preserve food before the days of refrigeration. Theirs was a richness of how to work with their hands. Educated in the ways to make-do with what they had; to name a few; rive boards and palings for fencing and house covering, in the dry areas how to dig and plaster a cistern for a water supply, experts in raising of log houses, ever log and corner was laid level and true, at clearing land the Hicks' were unsurpassed. In working with wood the Hicks family had a talent that few are blessed with, such as: making handles for farm implements, gun stocks, wooden mauls for splitting fence rails, firewood, and pounding a froe or wedge.

Washington County records show that Nathaniel Hicks bought forage for State use September 19, 1782. On May 20, 1783, he paid 305 pounds for beef for use by the Washington County militia in Powell Valley. In 1849 Nathaniel was employed in furnishing charcoal for a iron smelter called White's Forge on Big Moccasin Creek. The charcoal was made by burning hardwood. Claiborne and others of the Hicks Clan were engaged in the hardwood gathering. It has long been told that Claiborne Hicks had no equal in chopping and piling the wood in cords. Nathaniel has a number of descendants still living in Russell County near where the wood was gathered, and not far from the site of the old forge.

On December 2, 1851, Elias Hicks bought land on the south side of Moccasin ridge. (Deed Book 12, page 542); in Deed Book 13, page 225, October 10, 1853, he sold the land. Elias was born in Russell County (circa) 1795. He married Didama White or (Wyatt). 1850 census shows Didama born in South Carolina, (records of marriage destroyed by courthouse fire.) This census shows them with four children, the youngest Andrew R., one year old. I write of Andrew because he was my grandfather. He lived his entire life in Russell County, and raised his family there. Andrew was born in 1848; he married Susan, daughter of Claiborne and Susan (Hughes) Hicks, (no relation) November 27, 1867. They had two sons and two daughters; George Cowan, born 1869; Roberts, born 1871; Belle born 1876; and my mother, Mary Jane, born 1881. George Cowan married Elizabeth Scarberry, September 14, 1889, they had nine children, all married and likewise raised families there. Only two of the nine remain; Henry who lives in the Copper Creek area and Carson who lives near Castlewood, however, many of Cowan's descendants live in the western part of the county, most own their homes and small farms. Cowan died July 4, 1947 and Elizabeth (Aunt Betty) died January 22, 1959. Both are buried at the Henry Hicks family cemetery.

Robert married Josie Skeens, September 10, 1894. They had two sons and two daughters, one son and one daughter are still living, the son, Coley lives at the old home place on Copper Ridge. Robert died July 22, 1949. Josie died March 1933, both are buried at the home place on Copper Ridge.

Belle married Charles Smith, August 3, 1897, and had one son, Jim. All have departed this life.

Mary Jane married Frank Harvey, August 21, 1899. They had five children, all born in Russell County. All have passed on but one son; Rev. Homer Harvey of Bristol, Tennessee. Frank Harvey was slain in an altercation on Copper Ridge (circa) 1906 and is buried at the Arch Meade Cemetery. Mary then married King Sturgill of Wise County. Their issue was two boys and three girls, all are living. Mary Jane was born 1881; died October 6, 1922, and is buried beside her first husband Frank Harvey at the Arch Meade cemetery.

To visit the grassy mounds under which my loved ones are resting, brings fond memories of the wonderful times spent with my beloved Hicks family, on each occasion I cannot help but shed a tear.

The Old House On the Hill

Oh come and listen a true story I'll tell

Of my childhood I remember well

Away back in the country an old house on the hill

Where I lived as a child and my memory lingers still.

We didn't have any riches such as silver or gold

But we had love for each other

And other blessings ten fold.

We didn't even have money or go to the store

So we took some eggs and a few things more.

We didn't have any windows just small wooden doors

There were no curtains hanging and no knobs on the doors.

The walls were papered with old catalogs

And the ceiling was papered with the same.

The old chimney was built with old limestone rocks

And the cracks were filled with clay.

The old roof was covered with old rough boards

And the floors were just about the same.

My grandmother washed on an old washboard

But we didn't have anything to be ashamed.

We had plenty to eat and a few clothes to wear.

The winters were cold and life was hard to bear.

But when the mailman came he didn't leave a heat bill

When we all lived together in the old house on the hill.

My thoughts wander back to the old house on the hill

Where everything is gone now

And the place is so still.

My loved ones are gone and the old house too,

But the birds still sing there in the morning dew.

King Sturgill, Jr.

6-25-84

King Sturgill, Jr., grandson of Andrew Hicks wrote the above poem in memory of the old log house in which Andrew lived for many years, and King, Jr., spent much of his boyhood there. (RLS)

Most of the Hicks' in the western end of Russell County are direct descendants of Andrew Hicks.

Notes for KAY EVEONNE FLYNN:

Kay was born and grew up in Illinois. Her parents, Clarence and Eva, moved to Detroit, Michigan and then to a small farm in Romulus, Michigan. Kay married Raymond Eugene Hicks but divorced him when Kimberly was about 2 years old. Kay worked for many years at Parke-Davis in Detroit. She met and married John Calentine in 1970. They moved to Sarasota, Florida when John retired from Mobil Oil Company. Kay worked for many years at AAA Insurance Agency in their travel department until her death.

Kay had experienced pain in her right wrist for a long time and thought perhaps it was carpal tunnel syndrome. Tests showed no evidence of this. When Cal (John) was in the hospital for a hernia operation, Kay broke her arm when opening a door at the hospital by pushing against it with her shoulder. She was on pain pills and in a lot of pain, but x-rays showed the arm to be healing and she returned to work with limited use of her arm. One day, while sitting at the table in her dining room, she pushed lightly against the table and her arm broke again. She was admitted to Sarasota Memorial Hospital to fix her broken arm on Monday, July 28, 1997 and on Wednesday she was diagnosed with lung cancer. By Friday it was discovered that the cancer had spread to her organs and bones and nothing could be done. Kim, Cal, and Kay's sister Linda (who flew down Saturday from Michigan) were present at the hospital all day Saturday with her. She died Sunday morning, August 03, 1997 just minutes before her family could make it to the hospital.

From her obituary:

Kay Yvonne Calentine, 59, Sarasota, died August 3, 1997. She was born December 2, 1937, in Meredosia, Illinois, and came to Sarasota 10 years ago. She was a travel counselor for AAA Auto Club

South in Ringling Plaza.

Survivors include her husband, Cal; her mother and stepfather, Eva and Harold Johnson; one daughter, Kimberly Hicks of Coral Springs and a step-daughter, Susan of Saginaw, Michigan; a sister, Linda Keane of Canton, Michigan; a brother, Larry Flynn of Corona, California, and a grandchild, Alexis of Coral Springs.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. today at Bee Ridge Baptist Church. Burial will be private. Hawkins Funeral Home is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bee Ridge Baptist Church, 4210 Proctor Road, Sarasota, Florida.

13. KIMBERLY ANN4 HICKS (RAYMOND EUGENE3, WILLIAM OSCAR2, WILLIAM S.1) was born PRIVATE-LIVING INDIVIDUAL. She met ALLEN ALBERT ALVEDY, son of ALBERT ALVEDY and GLORIA ALVEDY. He was born April 24, 1954, and died June 15, 1989 in Minnesota.

Notes for KIMBERLY ANN HICKS:

My mother was divorced when I was two years old. I lived in Michigan with my mother and my grandparents, Clarence Flynn and Eva Floyd-Flynn. We lived on a small farm. Grandpa let me steer the tractor sometimes. I remember playing in the fields and the woods behind our house every summer and picking wild strawberries, mushrooms, cherries, and making crabapple mud pies! I spent a lot of time with my cousins, Rick, Cheryl, and John Pary, as well as with Ronnie Floyd's children, Vicki, Rick, and Terry. We went to California every summer until Grandpa died to visit with Uncle Larry and his children, Randy, Donna and Eddie. Grandpa died from lung cancer when I was eight. My mother remarried when I was 10 and Grandma went back to Illinois and became a nurse. She remarried and lived in Jacksonville, Illinois for many years. In the late '80's, my parents, grandparents and Lexi and I moved to Florida. My mother passed away from lung cancer in 1997.

I got my AA from Broward Community College in May of 1999 with emphasis on science/chemistry classes. I am currently enrolled at Florida Atlantic University in the Biochemistry program.

I am a PADI scuba instructor, although I have not had the time to teach for several years. Alexis was my first student when she was 9 or 10 years old--I certified her as a Skin Diver. I worked on a dive boat as a divemaster for a year after moving back down to Florida and then went back into the medical billing field.

Alexis and I were both extras in the movie "Any Given Sunday."

Allen and I separated before Alexis was born. He moved to Minnesota with one of his girlfriends around the time that Alexis was 4 years old. His grandmother told me that the girlfriend shot him with a shotgun one night and killed him. Allen had a drinking problem but I don't know if this was a factor in his death. The girl died from spinal meningitis before she went to trial.

Social Security Number: 1969, 375-60-083158

Child of KIMBERLY HICKS and ALLEN ALVEDY is:

i. ALEXIS KAY5 HICKS, b. PRIVATE-LIVING INDIVIDUAL.

Notes for ALEXIS KAY HICKS:

Alexis played the clarinet and bassoon in band in middle school, as well as clarinet, cymbals, and drums for the marching band. In 1997 she traveled to Europe (England, France, Belgium) with the band on a charity tour for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. She was in London for her 12th birthday--they went to see the play "Beauty and the Beast" at the Starlight Theater that evening. She has also traveled to Washington D.C. and Williamsburg, Virginia on a school trip. She spent part of a summer with one of her friends in New York and spent the part of several summers with her cousins in Michigan. "Fantasy Fest" in Key West is an annual trip/event. She has also taken a 4-day cruise to the Bahamas and spent a week on St. Martin in the West Indies.

At 17, Alexis has her Florida Driver's License and has her own car. She loves horses and we have four cats and 7 kittens. During the winter months, Alexis works as a squire for the Freelancers, which are the knights/jousters for the Florida Renaissance Festivals. She's known as Squirrel, which is a combination of squire and girl. We go to Tennessee during the summer where Alexis receives training in hand-to-hand combat, broadsword, and rapier and dagger. She has a certificate showing that she is certified at the second level from the American Academy of Stage and Screen Combat Choreographers. She will be learning to joust sometime in the next year. She is also a PADI certified scuba diver.

Alexis and I were extras in the movie "Any Given Sunday." Alexis was also in the Tampa, Florida area papers when she was photographed at Busch Gardens petting a turtle with Elwood P. Dowd, who is a dummy created by Doug Hand of Rock Falls, Illinois, an elementary school teacher. He travels the country with Elwood teaching children that if they believe in something hard enough, it can become real--he teaches them to have dreams and to strive to make them reality.
