I did find several Alexander McDannald's that fought with Charles Stuart mentioned in the history books. Notes from Shelley Erickson:

Alexander fought for Charles Stuart at Prestonpas and Culloden. He was deported to VA after Culloden 1746. Settled in Orange County, Virginia near Cedar Mountain.

He signed a will on January 29, 1783 in St. Mark's Parish, Culpeper county, Virginia. Children mentioned in the will:

Original info that I had said marriage date 1920 but Alexander would have been only 10 years old. Another source said 1732--LDS records. Will have to research to find out if either of them is correct. Isabella is not yet verified as being this Alexander's wife.

Children are per Will dated May 28, 1819. George gave a set sum of money to his wife, because of this there is some question that Mary was the mother of George's children. Usually if the widow is the mother, it is specified which child (usually a son) is to care for her during her natural life or as long as she remains a widow. There is a Betsy McDannald signing with George on some land transactions prior to 1810. She may have been the first wife.

"FAMILY STORY: The (Mohawk?)

Indians of the frontier in Virginia had not been tamed and were always a danger. About 1770, when George was 10 years old, indians raided the McDannald farm and killed everyone they could find. George and his younger sister by 2 years, Jane, hid in a cattle trough. They were the sole survivors. It is not known who raised the orphans or what became of Jane." (This story was in an Audrain County, Missouri history book with no author listed for the story.)

Although I found this story in George's notes in both Edna Kokanour's family tree and in another McDannald family member's (K & L McDannald from Connecticut) tree, Alexander is not shown as passing away until 1783--thirteen years after this incident supposedly took place. There may have been two McDannald families with a child named George about the same ages. Also, I do not see Jane as being one of our George's siblings. There is no Jane mentioned in Alexander's will. The above story may very well be referring to another family.

I George McDanald of the county of Fleming being sick and weak in body but of sound mind and dis---- memory for which I thank God and calling to mind the uncertanity of human life and being desirous to dispose of all such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with I give and bequeth in the following manner. That is to say:

1st: I desire that all my just debts be paid by my son William McDanald also pay to Mary McDanald my wife six hundred dollars when called for after ----- years if she should die before that period the sum to be at her disposal (the rest is unreadable)

Reuben is buried in the McDannold Cemetery, Pike County, Missouri. There are 44 graves in the McDannold family cemetery. The cemetery was in use between the years 1840 to 1888. He attended the Grassy Lick Baptist Church for 60 years. In December of 1835, he joined the Ramsey Creek Baptist Church. Reuben had been a deacon in Kentucky. Reuben was a large landowner near Aaron's Run, Montgomery County, Kentucky. The spelling of the last name was changed from McDannald to McDannold in Mt. Sterling, Montgomery County, Kentucky.

Reuben emigrated to Kentucky at an early day, secured a large tract of land, which he improved with slave labor, and resided there until 1834, then sold out and emigrated to Pike county, Missouri, settled near Clarksville, bought a farm and resided there until his death in 1854. John learned the trade of tanner and conducted the business in Owensville, Kentucky, and in connection with it engaged in the mercantile business. He resided there until his death in 1834. He was a Whig in politics, and served several years as Sheriff of that county.

This is part of a record written by John McDannald in 1936. Thomas listed on 1850 Brown County, Illinois census, page 153B with Winnie, Vesta, Levi, Newton and Mahala:

According to the recorded Genealogy of the "Scanlan" family dating back to the year 1814 and furnished to me by Guy Scanlan of Holton, Kansas. He also being a great grandchild of Thomas C. Reeves. This record says that Thomas came from an old Virginia family, who had first pioneered in Kentucky before migrating on into Brown County, Illinois. He was a pioneer hunter and trapper, built the first log house to be built by a white man in Buckhorn Township in Brown County, Illinois. His first wife Mary (McDannald) Cull was a widow. Mary was a sister of my great grandfather, John Thomas McDannald, and she was born in Scotland. After the death of Mary, Thomas married a woman by the name of Winnie and am told that there were 8 to 10 children born to this union.

From 'The old History Book of Brown County., Illinois' - John and James McDannald, 2 brothers came to Brown County. together landing in Buckhorn between Christmas and New Years in 1838. John had 13 children - seven came with him from Kentucky. One was Nealy McDannald Sr. James had a small family, none of whom were living in Brown County. in 1892. Listed as a farmer.

Nealy McDannald was appointed on September 30, 1857, by the court to adminster the estate of Margaret after her death.. Nealy was a resident of Adams County, Illinois at that time. John McDannald of Brown County signed the bond with him. Appraisers of the estate were: Francis Rioth, Elias Bixlerand, Thomas C. Reeves (a brother-in-law). The purchasers appear to be her sons Nealy and George W., her daughter Mahala Linn and her grandchildren Margaret and William Linn.

Frederick Bullard received $5.00 from the estate for attendance during the last sickness of Margaret McDannald. (Frederick's wife, Elizabeth Linn, was a granddaughter of Margaret.

Oldest of 10 children born to John and Elizabeth Ford... The Fords were of Scotch-Irish descent from Virginia.

They had nine children, five of them surviving when they moved to Pike County, Missouri, in the fall of 1834. They were part of the caravan including the Jeans, Juetts, Treadways, an McDannolds that settled in the Paynesville area... Lewis settled on the big Ramsey Creek, near the Ramsey Creek Baptist Church.

In 1827, Lewis and Susannah Ford bought 95 acres from Reuban McDannold.

Cause of Death: Cholera

After John Ellis died, Elizabeth took her family to Sangamon County, Illinois to be near her brothers, Elijah and Washington. The Iles family came from Loma, New York. Elijah was the first postmaster of Springfield, a state senator, a major in the Winnebago War, and captain of the company in the Black Hawk War in which Abraham Lincoln was a private. Iles Station was a flag stop on the Wabash Railroad.

Some Juett history:

Jouett is supposedly a French Huguenot name, although some by this name had been in England at least as early as 1485. In The Hugenot Immigration to Virginia by Brock, we read:

It is exhibited that there were numerous instances of individual settlements of French Hugenots in Virginia prior and subsequent to the influx of 1700. The names of Bertrand, Bowdoin, Cottre.. Flournoy, Jouet, Lacy, Michie, Trezevant and others have been most estimably represented.....

Note: Matthew Jouett patented large tracts of land in Hanover in 1732. Thomas Jouett patented lands in Albemarle in 1752. Captain Jack Jouet, by hard riding in May, 1781, apprised the fugitive Legislature, then sitting at Charlottesville, Virginia, of the approach of the British under Tarleton, and thus prevented their capture. The service was acknowledged by a resolution of thanks, passed June 12, 1781, and the presentation of an elegant sword and a pair of pistols. Captain Matthew Jouett of the State Line in the Revolution, fell in the service, and his representative received 4,000 acres of bounty land. A son of Captain Jack Jouett, the late Matthew Jouett, of Louisville, Kentucky, is said to rivalled in ability Gilbert Stuart as a portrait painter. It is claimed that the name was originally De Jouet.

A writer in Leslie's Popular Monthly for July, 1898, page 25, said:

Widow Robards built a large, handsome house; was uniformly kind considerate, and a generous, warm-hearted woman; proud, high-spirited, and was considered the most influential personage in the Blue Grass region; that her daughters - viz: Sallie Robards Jouett, wife of Captain John Jouett, member of the Virginia Legislature for several years, and Elizabeth Lewis Robards, wife of General William Buckner, were noted for their beauty and social tact.

Captain Jouett was the hero of the following daring deed In the heat of the Revolutionary war, in June, 1781, when Cornwallis was near Richmond, burning the barns, fences, and crops, and killing the horses of the farmers of Virginia, he sent Colonel Tarleton, with 250 cavalry on a special secret raid to surprise and capture the General Assembly, then in session at Charlottesville, in Albemarle County, Virginia. Their clandestine, rapid march was observed by Captain John Jouett. He divined their dangerous purpose, and started at once on his fleet thoroughbred horse to defeat their strategy. The passing, firing, race was swift, daring and perilous - so hot and close that a single unlucky bullet, or a misstep of his faithful steed, would place Captain Jouett at the mercy of the marauding troops. Fortune-Providence-favored the brave patriot. He gave the sudden warning, but so narrow was the escape of the Legislature that seven of the members were captured. A copy of the concurrent resolutions adopted December 12, 1786, shows the appreciation of the House and Senate of Virginia of the daring and important service of Captain John Jouett in baffling the scheme of Lord Cornwallis and his noted cavalry leader, Colonel Tarleton.

Mathew Jouett died in Louisa County, Virginia in 1734. He owned extensive land in Hanover in 1732, and was said to have furnished the land and built the courthouse for Louisa County on his land on Beaver Creek. He owned the Cuckoo Tavern in Louisa County, which got its name for the cuckoo clock which hung on its walls. This was supposedly the first cuckoo clock brought to Virginia. Does this mean that Mathew Jouett was a descendant of "Willam Jewett of Hanwell, clocksmith," one of the "Newgate prisoners reprieved for transportation to Barbados," and thence to Virginia, on July 15, 1663?

Mathew Jouett married Susannah Moore, and their children were Mathew, John (father of Captain John Jouett mentioned above) and Mary. John married Mourning Harris and their children were Robert, Mathew, John (Jack Jr.), and possibly the William Jouett (Juett) who was born about 1766. Was it this William Juett who married Ann Faulconer, (daughter of Joyce Craig and John Faulconer) in Fayette County about 1786, died in Harrison County, Kentucky October, 1821, and produced two daughters who married James Henry?

The brochure provided at The Jouett House outside Versailles, Kentucky, states:

The Jouett House is especially important because of the fame of its builder, Captain John (Jack) Jouett. Born in Albemarle County, Virginia, of French Huguenot ancestry, he was a son of Captain John and Mourning (Harris) Jouett. Of imposing physique, he bacame an expert horseman and hunter. He, his father and two brothers, early supporters of independence, were Captains in the Revolutionary Army in Virginia.

Who were the "two brothers?" I have no proof either for or against our William being one of the brothers of Captain John Jouett. What does seem likely is that William had some relationship to Robert and David Juett of Bourbon County.

Newton immigrated to Missouri in 1834, first settling on the Little Ramsey Creek where his father, Reuben, lived for about two years. He then moved to his permanent residence, "the old McDannold Homestead" two and a half miles south of Clarksville. He raised a large family of four boys and four girls, who all grew to be men and women, and seven of whom are still living. In 1870 he was elected Judge and served as a Justice of the Peace. In 1874 he was re-elected and held the position until his death. He was a charter member of the Knights of Honor, "membership composed of the best and most substantial citizens." He was also on the board of directors and President, until his death, of the Clarksville Road Company. Value of real estate $5000.00.

"No like area of territory can boast of better roads than the township of Calumet. Early imbued with the idea that good roads contributed largely to the development of a country, her citizens, led by a few enterprising spirits, organized, under the county court, in May, 1857, the "Clarksville, Prairieville, and Paynesville Road Company." The actual length of this road is fifteen miles, penetrating the finest portion of the township, and bringing to the door of Clarksville, the chief town of the township, the agricultural products of the vast Egypt lying in her rear. The stock for the construction of this road was subscribed, one-half by the county, four thousand dollars by the municipality of Clarksville, a large proportion of the balance by her private citizens, and the remainder by farmers resident along the line of the survey. The first board of directors were Newton Mc Dannold, John O. Roberts, H. V. P. Block, Joseph Meloan, J. E. Forgey, Peter Carr, and James T. Wilson.

The first officers were Newton McDannold, president; John O. Roberts, secretary, and H.V.P. Block, treasurer. The contract for its construction was let to John H. Baily on the 4th of September, 1857, but he having failed, the contract was relet on the 28th of April, 1858, to Michael Lynch and Patrick Conway, and the road was completed July 16, 1860. Prior to its completion, and as essential thereto, it became necessary to borrow money, and the board of directors, earnest in the work undertaken in the interests of the people, executed their individual note for the sum of ten thousand dollars. In the course of a few years it became necessary to procure a charter from the state legislature, at which time the name of the road was changed to Clarksville Road Company.

There has been expended in the construction of this road $78,365.82, and in repairs $42,131.79, while the expenses have aggregated $15,514.51, and the receipt for tolls have been $82,741.02. This is beyond all question one of the very best roads in the state, made so by the wisdom of its managers in applying the toll receipts to the keeping of the road-bed in the highest state of excellence demanded by the vast amount of travel. Of this road the people are justly proud. They pay their tolls cheerfully, feeling that they have one of the best roads in the country, and penetrating one of the finest countries on the continent.

To Judge Newton McDannold, who surrendered at his death, some two years ago, the office of its president, and whose duties he so long and faithfully performed, to John O. Roberts, who has been secretary of the company from the date of its organization, and to whose tact and abilities other enterprises of even greater moment owe their existence, no less than to H.V.P. Block, until a few months ago the only treasurer the road ever had, and whose financial skill and foresight aided largely in bridging the chasms along the route of a struggling directory, is most largely due to success of an enterprise of incalculable benefit to the citizens of Calumet, as also of inestimable advantage to the people of both Pike and Lincoln counties.

It is not alone in the building of her gravel roads that the persistent enterprise and indomitable pluck of her citizens have been exhibited, but the nerve and energy of the people of Calumet have been conspicuously displayed in the undertaking and final construction of a line of railway through the township and the county. Feeling the want of other communication with the outside world than that afforded by the Mississippi River, and believing that in action lay the hope of ultimate success, a few gentleman proceeded, on the 6th of December, 1869, to organize, under the general railroad law tof the state, the "Clarksville & Western Railway Co." So chimerical did the project then appear that the subscribers were limited to the members of the board of directors, which consisted of John O. Roberst, William McIntos, M.S. Goodman, James W. Stark, Joseph Meloan, J.E. Forgey, Newton McDannold, C.W. Pharr and J.C. Jamison....

At the organization A.C. Sheldon, afterward grand dictator, and Edward Price, of Hannibal, officiated. P.P. Parker was elected dictator; John Farrell, vice-dictator; J.W. Hendrick, reporter; R.W. Unsell, financial reporter; I.W. Buchanan, P. dictator; H.G. Mackey, E.P. Matthews, and John Appleton, trustees.

The present membership, composed of the best and most substantial citizens, is thirty-eight. In respect to good material no lodge in the city is superior to it. Griffith, John Farrell, and I.W. Basye. the average cost of insurance on $2,000 for three years, to those under forty-five years, is $14 per annum. John W. Hendrick has served faithfully as reporter since its organization, and John R. Wise, as treasurer. Meetings second and fourth Thursdays.

Benjamin F. Jeans, farmer and stock-raiser, post-office Paynesville; was born in Montgomery county, Kentucky, on the 23d day of May, 1810. He immigrated to Pike county, Missouri in the fall of 1828, settling on the place where he now resides, and has always followed the avocation of a farmer. The subject of this sketch was first married in Kentucky (returning there for that purpose) on the 14th day of July, 1831, to Miss Amanda McDannold, sister of the late Judge Newton McDannold. From this union were born twelve children, of whom ten still survive. Mr. Jeans, having lost his first wife, was again married on the 2d day of June, 1858, to Mrs. Mildred A. Anderson, originally from Fredericksburg, Virginia. They have but one child, a daughter, Mildred Emma. Mr. Jeans has been a consistent member of the Christian Church for a period of fifty years, and has lent all his influence to the advancement of morality and the cause of Christianity. His wife is, with him, a member of the same religious organization. Mr. Jeans refers with pleasure to the fact that he has to his knowledge no single enemy, but lives in peace with all men. The venerable mother of the subject of our sketch was born in Fairfax county, Virginia, in 1772, and died in Pike county, Missouri, in 1854. Mr. Jeans refers with recollections of pleasure to his early years in his adopted state, and speaks with tenderness of the associates of the long ago, with whom so many of the better years of his early manhood were spent, but who have now fallen by the wayside. Mr.. J., although seventy-three years of age, retains much of his physical vigor, while his mental faculties appear unimpaired.

Both died at the homestead and are buried in the Ford Cemetery in the McDannald Plot.

John left Brown County, Illinois for Oregon in 1865 with his family, forming a wagon train with his borther-in-law, Philip Linn. John and his family settled near what is now Milton-Freewater, Umatilla County, Oregon

MCDANNALD, John and wife Margaret CULL left Mt. Streling, IL for Walla Walla in 1865 and arrived in 1866. She died March 8, 1887 and he on January 15, 1890. The had a 160 acre homestead in Umatilla Co. Oregon, near Milton. "He took an active part in the county's development. Both died at the homestead and are buried in the Ford Cemetery in the McDannald Plot."

There were unwritten "Rules of the Road" as John McDannald writes in his diary on Sunday, July 5, 1865. Their wagon team was traveling along the Cache la Poudre on their way to La Porte. (I have the full text as well as an article from 1944 about the log cabin that John built.)

"As we are now following as closely as possible along the banks of Cache Lapondria in order to cross over this range of mountains out into the Laramie Plains, by way of the pass at its headwaters and Virginia Dale, we encounter some extremely rough and narrow road. There were certain unwritten but well recognized rules of etiquette of today. And the infraction of this unwritten law or acknowledged customs and practices of that time was not only looked upon with disfavor, but any man who repeated the offense seldom escaped with anything less than a severe reprimand, and a warning that it must not be repeated. It had always been mutually agreed that one team would not pass another while both were moving along the same road, unless the team in the lead had stopped to rest or to make alterations or repairs to either the harness or wagon; then it was permissible for the rear team to pass around the other wagon and take the lead."

As it happened, Mr. McDannald's train did come upon a slow moving freight train just as they were approaching the "Cache Lapondria Gorge," as he calls it. They decided to camp for the night, and allow the freight wagon to continue on into La Porte where they could overtake it the next day. He continues "...in some places it is not wide enough for two wagons to pass, and someone must keep far enough in advance of the train to stop anyone coming from the other direction while we were passing these extra narrow places."

The following Monday, Mr. McDannald noted that they were thankful that they had allowed the stock to rest at LaPorte, since "...the Box Elder Creek which we traveled along for some distance before we got to the old abandoned Stage Station at Virginia Dale, ran through a narrow gorge for a distance of about three miles, and while we had thought that the 'Gorge of the Cache LaPondria' was narrow, it was nothing compared to this one! It was utterly impossible for more than one wagon to negotiate this narrow defile in the earth's surface for the entire three miles. So it was necessary to send scouts on ahead to make sure that there is no other wagon already started through the Gorge from the other end before we dared to enter it."

Hiram & his brother (William H.) came west from NY in 1837. Hiram was a follower of Joseph Smith. In 1842 Hiram & William bought the mill yards in Elkhorn Township and some 200 acres of land and Hiram spent his life here. William H. & his wife Polly sold their interests in 1855 and left the county in 1856.

Built 1st mill in Elkhorn Township in 1837 for employers. His employers were Ayers and Lumbard.

The mill was both a grist and saw mill.

Sometime around 1840 he became Mormon minister.

Samuel was the teamster that drove the second wagon of the Cleminson family in exchange for his passage to California. He accompanied the Cleminson family on their wagon train to California in 1850.

The following was told by Lydia Ann to one of her great-grandchildren of her trip across the plains.

My father's family came in a wagon train with about 12 or 15 other families. Each family had two covered wagons, drawn by oxen. One wagon being used to travel and sleep in, while the other was to carry provisions for the journey. We started from Independence, Missouri in 1850. We first crossed the plains which are now Kansas, where we saw many herds of buffalo & antelope. Once the men killed a buffalo. It was very exciting for we youngsters.

There was a great danger from the Indians while crossing the plains of Kansas and once we saw a band of Indians riding toward us and we all kneeled down and prayed. When they came nearer we saw that they were traveling with their squaws and papooses and were peaceful. At one time we went for two whole days and nights without a drop of water to drink, either for us or the oxen. Another time when we were caught in a severe snowstorm, we lost our way and were compeled to camp for two whole days before we located the main road again. During that time we were compeled to melt snow for us to cook with, and also to water the oxen.

When we could camp for the night, we would arrange our wagons so as to form a circle, with the wagons close together, thus forming a corral for the oxen so that the Indians couldn't drive them off in the night. Two of the men would herd the oxen near the camp until midnight, then they would drive them into the corral formed by the wagons. Two other men would stand guard and watch out for the Indians for the remainder of the night.

One dark night the Indians drove off several head of oxen, thus leaving no oxen for one of the wagons, so the men pulled the wagon for a long ways, until we came to the mountains. Then it became too hard for the men to pull and we were forced to leave the wagon behind, together with quite a lot of our provisions. It took a long time to cross over the mountains. We always tried to find a level place on which to camp while in the mountains in order to form the wagons into a corral for the oxen.

While we were in the mountains, one of the young men went a short distance from camp to gather some pine gum and was shot down by an Indian. Oh! I can see that Indian yet. He was on one of the high peaks of the mountains and oh how he danced for joy when he saw he had killed a "Pale Face" (as they called us). We could hear him shouting in his native language. There was a great fear in our camp that night. No one slept a wink that night but we all sat up and kept a perfect watch in all directions so that we would not be surprised if attacked. But it must have been a lone warrior who had killed the young man for we had no more trouble with the Indians. We took the body of the young man down into the bottom of the valley to bury him. And as there was an old lady along with the train that had just died with Mountain Fever, she was buried in the bottom of the valley with the young man.

After laying over one day, we went on our way and soon after that we passed the place where the "Olive Oatman" Massacre had taken place the year before. There was a large pile of rocks to mark the spot where the Indian crime had taken place. There was a great many of their personal effects still scattered about, and among them we saw a small card box with the names of the two Oatman girls written on it. And that evening we heard a bell ringing in the distance and it was a very joyful sound to our ears. In the morning we found that it had come from a small spanish settlement called "Tobac".

After leaving the settlement of Tobac, the next town we came to was "Tucson". And here we camped for about two months, to allow our oxen to rest and gather strength. And we also enjoyed the rest as it had been a long tiresome journey, with many a weary day and watchful night. While we were camped here an old, old Indian squaw used to come to our camp to get food. She looked to be at 100 years old, but we were unable to find out just how old she really was. She would come in and seat herself on the floor, then stretch out her hands and say something in her native language, then my mother would give her something to eat. There was also an old Pimo Indian Chief who would come to our home for food. My mother always gave this old Indian chiefton something to eat, and when we started on and came through to the Pimo Indian Village, this old Pimo Chief looked through the wagon train until he located our wagon. And when he found it he raised up the wagon cover and slipped a little sack of ground corn which had been sweetened into our wagon. This ground corn he called "Panochi".

And from here we traveled down the "Gila" river to Fort Yuma, and it is here we crossed the Colorado River, on a ferry boat. We camped in a tent for several days at Fort Yuma. One night we heard a queer noise and when we got up to see what it was, we found a rattle snake coiled up beneath mother's pillow. Of course that was only one of the many trials and dangers that we encountered while traveling and camping out on the prairies.

We went with a government train across the Colorado Desert, arriving in San Diego in the spring of 1851. Having spent one whole year crossing the plains from Independence, Missouri to San Diego, California. Then after a few weeks in San Diego I married your grandfather, Samuel Sylvester Reeves, who then a young man had come across the plains in the same train with us. We were the first American couple to be married in the little new town of San Diego. We were married on the 15th of April 1852. Soon after our marriage we moved to San Bernardino, California where two daughters were born. Then we moved to El Monte, California where we took up a squatters claim on lands afterward claimed by "Uncle Lucky Baldwin". And after we were forced off of our claim by Baldwin we moved to Azusa, California. There were five girls and one boy born while we lived in El Monte.
