1502    WILLIAM BLOUNT

William "Willie" Blount was born in Bertie County, North Carolina. He was a Judge of the superior Court of Tennessee at 28 years of age and Governor of Tennessee from 1809 to 1815.
In 1813, Governor Blount called for several thousand volunteers to put down the Indian uprising that had led to the massacre of 250 men, women and children at Ft. Mims, Alabama. Headed by General Andrew Jackson, this force ultimately defeated the warring Indians at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. William Blount ran for Governor again in 1827, but was defeated by Sam Houston. He was the great-great-grandfather of another Tennessee Governor, H. H. McAlister.

Thomas Herndon was the son of Tempest Riggsbee and Chesley Herndon. He was married to (1) Sarah Beaumont Dinwiddie Herndon--married in Feb.1866, (2) Laura Gertrude Coleman Herndon--married in Nov.16,1881. He enlisted in Company L, 14th Tennessee Regiment. He was commanding Company K at the Battle of Gettysburg, when he was captured. For 20 months he was a prisoner on Johnson’s Island. Austin Peay IV was the son of Austin Peay and Cornelia Frances Leavell Peay. Austin Peay IV married Sallie Hurst September 19,1896. Governor Peay streamlined state government agencies, instituted a substantial road building program and overhauled public education. He also strongly supported the establishment of the Smoky Mountains National Park. In 1925 he signed into law House Bill No. 185 outlawing the “teaching of the Evolution Theory in all the Universities, Normals and all other public schools of Tennessee, which are supported in whole or in part by the public school funds of the State, and to provide penalties for the violations thereof.” This law was put to the test in the celebrated “monkey” trial of high school biology teacher John T. Scopes in July, 1925.
He was a Democrat, Lawyer, member of Tennessee State House of Representatives (1901-1905), Tennessee Democratic State Chair (1905), Governor of Tennessee (1923-1927). He was delegate to Democratic National Convention from Tennessee (1924). He was a member of Freemasons, Elks, Knights of Pythias. Austin Peay IV became the first governor of the state to die, in office, when he succumbed to a brain hemorrhage at the Governor’s Residence in Nashville, Tennessee October 2,1927.
