JAMES W. PONDER III
Sgt. 1st Class James "Tre" Ponder died June 28, 2005, in Kunar Providence, in eastern Afghanistan when his MH-47D helicopter was shot down by enemy fire during combat operations. He joined the Army in March 1990 as a Chinook helicopter repairer. After graduating from Basic Training, Fort Eustis, Virginia, he was assigned to Camp Humphries, Korea. He arrived at the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment Airborne in December, 1992, and served in a variety of positions, including 2nd Battalion, 160th Flight Engineer instructor, 2nd Bn Standardization Instructor, and Regiment Standardization Instructor. This was his fourth rotation to Afghanistan.
Ponder's military schools include: the Primary Leadership Development Course, the Combat Lifesavers Course, Survival Evade Resist Escape Level-C Course, the Basic Noncommissioned Officers Course, the Equal Opportunity Representative Course, the Air Assault, Airborne, and the Army Advanced Noncommissioned Officers Course.
His awards and decorations include: the Air Medal with Valorous device, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Joint Service Achievement Medal, the Valorous Unit Award, the Army Superior Unit Award, the Good Conduct Medal, the Korean Defense Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Overseas Service Ribbon. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal and an Air Medal with Valor device.
He was the son of James William Ponder Jr. & Rebecca Massey Ponder and the husband of Leslie Ponder.

FRANK SPENCER SUTTON
Frank Spencer Sutton was the only child of Frank Sims Sutton and Thelma Spencer, who met while both were working at the local newspaper, the Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle. About 1930, his father became a linotype operator for another newspaper, the Nashville Tennessean, and the family moved to Nashville.
Frank Jr. was an active member of his high school drama club. He was also a radio announcer and after military service during World War II, he went to Columbia University School of Drama, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude.
Frank Spencer Sutton was an actor and is best remembered for his role of ‘Gunnery Sergeant Vincent Carter’ on the television comedy series "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C." 1964 to 1968. In the 1950s and 1960s, he played many small roles, usually tough guys with a soft heart, in television and the movies, including such shows as "Captain Video" 1949 to 1956, the soap opera "The Secret Storm" he was a regular during the 1960 to 1961 season, "Naked City", "The Untouchables", "Gunsmoke", "Maverick", "Combat", and "The Twilight Zone". His lasting fame came as the tough 'Sergeant Carter', the drill instructor for 'Private Gomer Pyle' (played by Jim Nabors) in "Gomer Pyle, USMC". After the show's cancellation, he remained friends with Nabors, and worked on Nabor's next show, "The Jim Nabors Hour" 1969. Following this, he continued to make guest television appearances and performed in dinner theater. He died suddenly of a heart attack, while preparing for an appearance in a dinner theater in Shreveport, Louisiana.

She once shook hands with famous aviator, Amelia Earhart; and Admiral Richard E. Byrd presented her with the top Girl Scout merit award of the era - the Golden Eaglet. She remained active with the Girl Scouts of America; and was involved with Historic Rugby, Inc., manager of the settlement of Rugby, which her grandfather help start. She was among the original organizers of the city’s senior citizen’s center, and a member of the Capt. William Edmondson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
