Isabella Nicol Corbet

Daughter of David Nicol & Janet Bremner.
Married Alexander Corbet on 25 July 1807
in Avoch, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland.

Alexander Corbet

The Nicol line is connected twice to the Corbet line, starting with the marriage of Isabel Nicol, daughter of David Nicol & Janet Bremner, to Alexander Corbet in Avoch, 25 July 1807.

Isabel and Alexander had 7 children: Janet, John, Alexander, Margaret, John, James & Elizabeth.

Their son Alexander Corbet married his cousin Margaret Nicol, daughter of Alexander Nicol & Margaret Forsyth in Avoch 7 Feb 1845. According to the 1851 census, Alexander was a farmer of 25 acres with two servants. The couple had 6 children, Margaret, Alexander, Isabella, Janet, Christina & John.

It appears that the family had decided to leave Scotland and try their luck in Australia. Sadly Margaret died 22 Feb 1859 at West Culbo, Avoch, before that could happen. Perhaps passage had already been arranged, because Alexander and the children left Liverpool on the 'Eagle,' 18 Nov 1859.

Although the passenger list states Mr & Mrs Corbet, it was his sister Elizabeth who went with him to help care for the children. They arrived in Melbourne 21 Feb 1860 and settled in White Hills, Sandhurst. Alexander named their home "Culbo."

Margaret, sister of both Alexander and Elizabeth, also came to Australia with her husband Alexander McDonald. The sisters are buried together in White Hills, Victoria, Australia.

Alexander Corbet born in 1847, son of Alexander Corbet & Margaret Nicol, found work on the gold fields of Bendigo, Vic. In the late 1800s, he moved his wife and family to Gympie, Queensland.  The Corbet name is well known in this area today. There are now a further five generations of this family in Australia.
