Heneretta Nicol (1846-1920s)

Born Resolis Parish, Ross & Cromarty, Scotland.
Great Granddaughter of David Nicol & Janet Bremner.

Heneretta Nicol was born on the Black Isle in 1846, daughter of John Nicol and Isabella Stewart.   She is listed as both Heneretta and Henrietta. She married Andrew Mackenzie of Inverness in 1868.

We have Andrew on the 1851 census staying with a relative on the Black Isle, so maybe they had known each other since childhood. Maybe even a relative???

Andrew was the son of George Mackenzie also of Inverness as were  the previous 2 generations at least.  His mother was Margaret Noble, and he was one of at least 8 children.  Andrew followed his father into the shoe making business. We have a photograph of him with the words underneath:

High Class Boot and Shoe maker

Andrew and Heneretta had 8 children. George Mackenzie, our ancestor, was the eldest, born in 1869. His siblings were Margaret, John, Etta, Alexander, Bella, Andrew Thomas (usually called Tom), and Christina. Both Christina and Bella lived into their 90s and were nurses. They married but had no living descendants, Christina's only son being killed in a climbing accident. Tom had twin boys, but they did not have children. The others we do not know.

Heneretta Nicol circa 1890

Editors' Note: Read about Heneretta Nicol Mackenzie's brother, Alexander Nicol b c1860. Her other four siblings were: Thomas Nicol- 1847, Christian Nicol-1855, John Nicol, Margaret Nicol.

Andrew MacKenzie circa 1890

George Mackenzie (b 1869)

The son of Heneretta Nicol & Andrew Mackenzie, George Mackenzie moved to live in England in the 1890s. He was an engineer and started work in the Shipyards in Barrow in Furness, Cumbria.

George was a very devout Christian and attended the Methodist church there, where he met Helen Statham. They were married in 1899. George and Helen had 4 children: Fanny-1900 who never married, Frank-1902, Ada-1903 and Helen born 1909. Once every year, after his father died in 1912, George would make the journey back to see his mother Heneretta. She died in the 1920s.

Frank married Charlotte Garnett and eventually settled in Norfolk. He too was an engineer. They had 3 sons: Andrew, a Methodist minister, Donald a Headmaster and John, a Headmaster and music teacher. Donald has never married but the other two also produced 3 children but all girls. Andrew's 3 girls are Janet, Alison and Fiona. Alison has not yet married. Janet has 2 children, and her husband has taken the name Mackenzie to stop it, hopefully, running out. Fiona has 3 children.   John's 3 girls —Sarah, Joanna and Rebecca— all have 3 children themselves. These girls are very musical like their father.

Ada and Helen married two brothers. Ada, a teacher, married William Hale (the oldest in his family), and Helen Mackenzie married Rowland Hale (the youngest son in the family).
