John Keefe was born in Ireland about 1815. Mary was born about 1818, also in Ireland.It is possible that James and Mary Keefe came to the United States during the Irish Famine. They were definitely in the U.S. before 1854, because their eldest son was born in Pennsylvania during that year.

In 1860 John worked as a "Laborer." The family consisted of four sons-- John, age 6; Michael, age 5; Thomas, age 3; and James, 1 year old. They lived in Susquehanna Depot, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania.
