HUGH S.LEWERS DIES

Hugh S. LEWERS died in Van Buren on the night of the 9th inst., age 55 years.The sudden demise of Mr. Lewers was a great shock to our citizens.While it was known that he had been confined to his home by illness for a week no one suspected that it was of a serious nature.He was a son of Thomas and Teresa (SIMS) Lewers and was born in Lawerence District,South Carolina.

From August 1861, until the close of the war he was in the confederate Army, with Colonel Wirt ADAMS regiment of calvary, and was made Lieutenant Colonel, which posistion he held to the close of the war.

Mr. LEWERS came to Crawford County, in 1881, settling at Alma, where he engaged in farming.During Clevelands first administration he was appointed post master at that place.Six years ago he moved to Van Buren,having been elected circuit clerk of the county.At the expiration of his first term, he was re-elected to the office, and since his retirement, has continued to make his home in Van Buren.At the last election he was elected Alderman.

He leaves a wife and one son.He was a member of the Presbyterian church and also a member of the Masonic and K & P fraternities, a number of whom attended the interment, which took place at Alma, Thursday morning, also a number of friends attended.(buried at Alma Cemetery born-Feb.14,1841)This article has been cut short.
