The daily life on a 1892 ranch plus traveling by train are the subjects of this diary by Emma Patchett Crow. Emma was born in  1830 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.  Her parents were John Patchett and Esther Passmore.  Emma passed away on December 22, 1920 in California and is buried at the  Hills Ferry Cemetery near Newman, Ca.  She married  Benjamin Hamilton Crow on October 10, 1858.  He was born on February in Mercer County, Kentucky,    Benjamin died in September  1906, at Crows Landing, Stanislaus Co., Ca., and is  buried at the  Hills Ferry Cemetery  Newman, Ca.


January 1, 1892

It rained last night sprinkled lightly today.  Cloudy the most of the day.  Mr.Crow been choring around the most of the day.  Mr.Crow,  Mrs. Hoyt and I  went down to the straw shed to see the horses and to the river.


January 2, 1892

Cloudy part of the day and foggy.  Cool the sun shone out awhile.  Mr. Crow choring around.  Mrs. Hoyt and I went up to Laura and to Ida's.  Laura was at Ida's .  I got a letter from Stella Crow inviting me to come over to her wedding on the 6 of this month.  It seems like it was only the other day when was a little girl now to be married shortly.  I can hardly realize it.  How time flies: I am getting to be amongst the old people of our generation.  Mr. Crow got a letter from J. A. Crow and one from Mr. A. L. Yates he answered it.  Ida wrote to Nellie Rose for me that Uncle Ben would go to Modesto for her on Tuesday. He will take Mrs. Hoyt to Modesto to take the train for Dixon.

"Miss. Estella M. Crow was married on Wednesday last to Mr. John Conant of Oakland.  The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.J. Crow of near Oakdale, and is a very handsome as well as highly accomplished young lady.  The groom is a well to do architect of Oakland.  The happy couple left Wednesday for Oakland where they will reside. January 3, 1892

A heavy fog all day.  Mr. Crow a visiting with the folks.  Brad came down for breakfast and staid all day.  Oscar came down and brought us the mail.  I had a turkey dinner.  Brad, Frank and Ida Will and Thane Ingram, Mr. Hoyt, Mr. Crow and myself making 8.  We had a nice dinner all seemed to enjoy it after dinner.  Bell Crow and her five children came we all spent a pleasant afternoon.

 

January 4, 1892  Monday

Half way cloudy some sunshine.  Mr. Crow, Jimmie, Frank and Brad went a hunting caught one coyote.  Mrs. Hoyt and I went down to the orchard around by the old house brought the step ladder up went over to see Thane awhile she came over and spent the balance of the afternoon with Mrs. Hoyt.  I went up to see Mrs. Oswold.  She is going to leave Brad's.  Mays is coming there to stay.  He brought a load of furniture last night, got our spring wagon to go over after his wife.  San down after the kettle to cook out some lard.

 

January 5, 1892

Bright and pleasant today and warm a little cloudy.  This evening Mr. Crow went to Modesto today to take Mrs. Hoyt.  She went to Sacramento tonight on her way home to Dixon.  We gave her a Christmas present of 10 dollars.  He expected to bring Nellie Rose back with him.  But she wasn't able to come, she has eczema on her hands so bad she isn't hardly able to dress herself.  I washed cooked out some tallow, cleaned the smoke house and the yard and the hen house, store house boys house and granary.  Mrs. Ingram , Lara Crow and spent the afternoon.  Head old Mr. Wilson was buried today.  Ora Brewster yesterday.  Herbert Rose is in the city expects to go to the mine soon.  I got a letter from Maggie Poor and one from Nellie Rose.  I hated to see Mrs. Hoyt leave we has a pleasant visit with her.  I sent Mrs. Allen some pears and eggs.

 

January 6, 1892

Warmer today some clouds.  The sun shone out this afternoon.  Wind south east a little cloudy tonight.  Mr. Crow, Will Ingram and Brad after a coyote the dogs haven't gotten back yet.  The dogs got away from Them.  I ironed cut up and salted some beef.  I finished moving the woodpile and cleaned up around.  Thane and Will over and spent the evening.  Mays and Myra down this evening.  They have arrived at Brad's from L. Crows.  Mr. Crow got a tag from the S.J. Bank for the 95 dollars that he got from Mr. Jamison.  Mr. Crow got Fannie and her colt up to wean the colt .  I took them out to water today and they got away from me and broke the fence down.

 

January 7, 1892

It rained a shower last night.  This forenoon foggy this afternoon the sun shone out dimly.  A little sprinkle of rain today.  A little cloudy tonight.  Crow caught up and matted a young jack and a young station colt.  I brewed coffee and baked a cake.  Thane and I went out to the station after flour.  Mr. Mays down this evening.  I called to see Mrs. Mays she looks very well much larger and fleshier than she used to be.

 

January 8, 1892

It has been cloudy the most of the day.  Sprinkled a little today, commenced to rain tonight at eight o'clock.  Tonight looks like it might rain all night from the appearance of the clouds.  Mr. Crow went up to the ranch to see Bennie ,  and sawed wood this afternoon, he went up to Brad's and spent the evening.  I baked some pies, picked a goose and took it over to Thanes.  Mr. Clary down to see me his family are all sick and wanted to know of me what to do fur them.  He didn't want to give them de medicine they have La Grippe.  Firgensom almost has pneumonia with it.  Cash and Cora up at Brad's tonight came up to attend a meeting at the Modesto Bank where they are largely interested.

 

January 9, 1892

Pleasant this morning, but cloudy or foggy the most of the day, quite foggy tonight.  Crow been coring around been poisoning gophers this afternoon.  I made yeast and baked cookies.  Thane and Myra Mays here this afternoon.  Frank came down this morning filled the gun shells fur Mr. Crow.  Mr. Crow got a letter from Mr. Grubble of Snelling about renting his land near Snelling.  He will deliver the grain at the mill instead of the railroad.

 

January 10, 1892

A heavy fog this morning almost like rain been about half way foggy all day.  A high fog of cold west wind.  Mr. Crow wrote a letter to Mr. Grubble and took it to the office and skinned two coons, him and Will Ingram went down in the bottoms with the dogs and caught last night.  I have been reading the most of the day.  Frank down this morning.  Will and Thane and Arthur Crow down and spent the evening.

 

January 11, 1892

Cold and clear a cold north wind this afternoon.  Mr. Crow off a hunting with the dogs today.  I washed, mopped, mended, moved a pile of lumber, cut up two coons for the chickens.  Thane and I went out to the station this afternoon  I to take my clothes to the wash and to get a sack of graham flour and than to so some shopping.  Mr. Mays stopped on their way to the river after water fur Mrs. Mays to wash with.

 

January 12, 1892

Warmer today considerable cloudy tonight looks like it might rain before morning.  Mr. Crow went up to Clearlys to see them.  They have all been sick all better today.  He came home by Luther Riggs and Franks Crows.  Tonight Mr. Crow took the dogs and out a coon hunting tonight I ironed and worked at the lumber pile until after noon.  Thane came and staid until evening.  Then Will came and they got my old stove and took home with them.   They are going to move out to the Grafford place.  Mollie Crow, Nellie Rose and Callie Crow over this afternoon.  Nellies hands look pretty badly she has exema on it says Lewis is around a working but suffers with his back.

 

January 13, 1892

Cold and foggy all day.   The sun shone out a little while this evening.  Mr. Crow went up to the ranch after a plow and took Ida up a pumpkin, some beets, and carrots, canned fruit and preserves.  This evening he was out in a long race with the dogs after a coyote.  I haven't been doing much today, but visiting with Nellie and Callie rose.  I have had a lame back from my other work yesterday.  I went over to Thanes and took her a letter.  I went to Brad's tonight to see if they knew  where Mr. Crow was when he was after the coyote after dark.  Mollie Crow went up to Ida Crow's today.  Mr. Sam Moorhead and Mr. Chris Krogh here today to see Mr. Crow about putting in land.  Thane and Will Ingram went to Newman to get some cooking vessels to my old stove and a new back to it.

 

January 14, 1892

This morning foggy, cleared off in the forenoon bright and clear the balance of the day.  Mr. Crow took two plows and took them out to Dennis and got them sharpened and straitened.  Nellie and I have been reading not doing much.  I piled lumber a little while.  I wrote a letter to Mrs. Hoyt.  Nellie and I went up to see Mrs. Mays awhile.  Myra is sick La Gripe I expect Brad looks well.  Charley Haile was down to see him.  We got a letter from John Patchett and one from cousin Elwood and from Hannah and Will Isom.  Hannah was married to Will on the 6 of this month the same day that Estelle Crow was married.  Mr. Mays came down and brought me some meat.  Frank Crow has three teams a plowing he is plowing n he land that he irrigated.

 

January 15, 1892

Foggy while this morning, cleared off nice and pleasant, sun shone bright and arm.  Mr. Crow plowing in the old orchard to sow some barley.  He wrote a letter to Will and Hannah Isom.  Nellie and I went down to where Mr. Crow was at work and we went to burning weeds.  Cleaned the ground so he can finish plowing tomorrow.  Mollie came down today.  She went back to stay with Ida tonight.  Frank had gone to Oakdale.  Will Ingram and Thane over and spent the evening.  Mr. Crow went down in the bottoms last night with the dogs caught a large fat coon he weighed it weighed 19 pounds.

 

January 16, 1892

Pleasant this morning.  The west wind came up cool and a perfect gale about 10 o'clock and has blown hard ever since and this is bedtime sounds like blow all night.  Mr. Crow choring around sowed his barley.  Will Ingram came over and finished plowing the piece and harrowed it.  Mr. Crow was so sore from fighting the plow yesterday that he didn't feel like much today.  I took a bath, cut up a coon for my chickens been busy all day done some mending.  I trimmed a shirt.  Will Ingam here for dinner.  Mays down after the rat traps.  Mollie Crow and Nellie Rose went home today.  Mr. Crow got a letter from M. Tully he wanted 13,000 dollars to loan on some land.  I got a letter from George Poor he has got better.

 

January 17, 1892

The north wind blew hard all last night and today until evening it calmed down.  Mr. Crow around the house the most of the day.  I was reading until afternoon.  I went up to see Mrs.  Mays.  Her and Myra were both sick a touch of La Grippe.  I doctored Mrs. Mays awhile came home and got my flannel bath clothes and took them up to her she was considerable better.

Mr. Crow wrote a letter to Mr. Tully.  Oscar took it to the post office.  Brad Crow, Will and Thane over and spent the evening with us.  There is a deal of the la Grippe.  Will said that he was up at Franks this afternoon that Ida and Frank both was nearly sick with bad colds.  He said Bennie was as fat a little pig and as hard as a pine knot.

January 18, 1892

Today has been calm and pleasant all except a little while the wind blew from the south.  Mr. Crow been poisoning gophers when he wasn't doing chores.  I washed some mopped my kitchen and my room divided the dried fruit to take up to Frank, marked the cans of fruit and tomatoes, dug some beets and carrots and took them up to Ida this afternoon.  Thane went along with me we stopped at Ida's a little while and went on to the washer woman's and left my clothes and got the wash from there went to the store and got me a pair of shoes.  Henry Crow was at the store he looks very thin.  The first time I have seen Henry fur three years.  I met Frank at Mr. Thompson's on his way home from Modesto.  He looks badly has a bad cold hardly able to ride. 

 

January 19, 1892

There was quite a frost this morning but today has been bright, warm and lovely, a little cloudy this evening.  Mr. Crow not feeling very well today.  Him and I went up to see Frank this afternoon he has had the La Grippe and I was uneasy about him.  Tonight Mr. Crow and Henry Crow went a coon hunting.  They haven't gotten back yet and it is nine o'clock.  Henry says that his Pa and Ma came up yesterday.  His Pa's was quite poorly as we went up to Franks we met him coming down after a sheep to kill.  He is some better today.  Mr.  Snidigar was their he came over to brand some colts.  We took Nig (horse) up to Frank to work.  Frank has three teams a plowing.  Sam a poisoning squirrels, Mr. Crow got a letter from Mr. Tully.  I finished moving the lumber.  Mr. Nidra her today he wanted to buy some land.  Will Ingram over he hurt his eye.

 

January 20, 1892

A frost this morning arm and pleasant today.  Mr. Crow choring around this forenoon.  This afternoon him and I went out to John Stewart's to see Pike and Mag.  Pike is sick. Mag looks pretty well they both seemed glad to see us.  I cleaned up the yard where I moved the lumber from and burned up the trash when we got home we found a man here.  Mr. Lazarel after Mr. Lassons jeannets.  He staid all night.  I got a letter from Wiley and Edith and a check for $13.25 for eggs I sent their.  Mr. Crow and Henry got back about 12 o'clock last night they caught two fat coons.  I cut one of them up today.  Brad down and spent the evening.  His men are working on the dam.  Thane over after yeast they are going to move to the Grafford place tomorrow. 

 

January 21, 1892

Cool and frosty this morning, but warm and pleasant through the day.  Mr. Crow done his chores I got a good chicken dinner and has a good time visiting with the kinfolks.  Pike Crow and wife, Nellie Steward and Margaret, Mary Crow here for dinner and spent the day and Brad here this afternoon we all enjoyed our selves seem like old times, to be together.  Mr. Lazzrel here last night left his morning to Mr. Kasson jennets home.  We got a letter from Hannah Isom saying that they will be in Modesto Saturday.  Mr. Crow will go to meet them.  Mr. Crow and I expect to go to meet them.  Mr. Crow I expect to got out to Mr. Hailes tomorrow to see old Mrs. Halile I knew her when I was a girl.  Will and Thane Ingram moved out on the plains today.  Thane over to tell me goodbye.  I hated to see her go. 

 

January 22, 1892

Cool this morning but warm and pleasant through the day.  Mr. Crow and I went out to Charley Hail's and spent the day.  Charley's Martha is with him.  I was acquainted with her many years ago this is the first time we have met in 30 years we spent an enjoyable day together talking over old times. Mr. Crow back by Frank's and brought Nig (horse) home with us.  Frank was out making a garden and Bennie  was out with him helping him work as busy as a bee when we left he followed us nearly to the gate.  I wrote a letter to Edith and Wiley and Mr. Crow wrote to Mr. Tully.  Old Grandma Fentem is dead her funeral sermon will be preached at Newman tomorrow.  Poor old lady she has been sick a long.

 

January 23, 1892

Frost last night but warm and pleasant today.  Mr. Crow started for Modesto his morning after some friends met them half way here and turned around and came home.  I scrubbed the porches, churned, cleaned and worked until noon.  This afternoon.  Mr. Crow Will and Hannah Isom and I went down to the river and to the orchard around looking around.  Hannah is my cousin's daughter.  They have come up to see us from Orange.  Esther, Hannah's sister sent me a box of oranges.  Mays and Myra down.  Mr. Crow and I both took our usual Saturday bath.  Mr. Crow got a letter Walter Smith he is our insurance agent and he could loan six or seven thousand dollars and wanted Mr. Crow to furnish the money.  The man that drove the carriage that brought Will and Hannah here for dinner.

 

January 24, 1892

Cool and frosty this morning but warm and pleasant through the day.  Mr. Crow and Mr. Isom around together.  Mr. Isom killed a duck this evening.  Mr. Crow wrote a letter to J. Walter Smith.  Hannah and will writing home to their folks.  Tom Crow his wife down and spent the day.  Ida and Bennie down this evening.  Frank came down this morning brought a bull down took one back and took old Nig back to finish sowing with tomorrow.  I went up to see Mrs. Mays but I didn't find her at home.  Osear said the Mayra had the earache and they were walking about with her today has been very nice almost like summer a gentle south wind.

 

January 25, 1892

Cool all day with a strong south east wind.  The wind has got more to the south west tonight sprinkling rain and looks and feels like it might rain all night.  Mr. Crow went u to the ranch this morning this afternoon him and Will were down in the bottoms this afternoon  Will fixed the straw shed.  Hannah and I washed and cleaned the hen house done some mending We went out to the station to take some clothes.  I got some beans and clothes pins.  I throwed considerable wood in the wood shed.  Hannah hemmed a red table cloth.  Mr. Isom and Hannah seemed very well satisfied.  I went up to see Mrs. Mays, Myra had the earache.  Will went down to night to see if he couldn't kill a goose.

 

January 26, 1892

It rained quite a rain last night been more or less cloudy all day with a south and south west wind looks like it might rain more tonight. .  Mr. Crow choring around in the forenoon.  This afternoon he was down below the orchard helping Will Isom dig up the willows that have come up since harvest.  Him and Will killed a lot of little pigs this morning.  Hannah ironed and bake light bread we had one man her for dinner.  They commenced summer fallow out in the 80 yesterday.  They will eat dinner here and stay at Franks of a night.  I wrote to Ester Rose, Mrs. Hoyt and to Wiley, I wanted him to send a chicken coop back.  Brad down and spent the evening.  Mr. Crow and Will Isom out a coon hunting tonight.  I copied a lot of writing today. 

 

January 27, 1892

The wind blew pretty hard fro the north and then north west all night and all day and still blowing to night looks like it might blow all night.  Mr. Crow and Will sent up to the ranch and got Nig and the wagon and have been cleaning the weeds and grubbing the willow don below the orchard getting ready to plow tomorrow.  Hanna baked cake, blacken the stove gave the dinning room and her room a good sweeping.  We were both busy all forenoon.  There are three teams plowing and in the 80 and they are here for dinner and to up to Frank's of a night.  Mrs. Mays here the most of the afternoon after she left.  Hannah and I went down where the men were at work and we burned the piles of weeds that Will raked up.  I got a letter from Mollie Crow last night saying that Lewis was sick.  Frank down today.

 

January 28, 1892

The wind blew pretty hard all night but calm, warm and lovely today.  Mr. Crow working down in the bottoms.  Will plowing down in the bottom and three men plowing out in the 80.  Sam Roundtree brought half a beef down that Frank killed and I cut it up and salted it.  We had turnips, carrots and beets out of our garden that was planted last year.  They are good.  Mr. Haile and Susie Hail and her boy, Ida and Bennie down in all there were 12 persons for dinner after they all left and Hannah and I went down to where Mr. Crow and Mr. Isom was at work.  We had a pleasant visit with Mrs. Haile and Susie.  It seemed good to see the old friends of my young days.  We got a letter from L.J. Crow he has gotten better had a bad attack of Gryoipeles.

 

January 29, 1892

Frost this morning, cloudy the most of the ay.  Still cloudy tonight wind gentle north west.  Mr. Crow choring around burning straw and weeds and killing pigs.  Will Isom plowing down in the lower garden didn't get quite done.  The three men that are plowing in the 80 comes here for dinner, they expected to finish plowing this evening and go out on the plains tomorrow to get to summer fallowing.   Hannah and I have been busy about the work.  Hannah wrote a letter and fixed her dress sleeves.  I went up to see Mr. Mays awhile.  She was making beef sausage, she give me some to bring home for breakfast.  Frank and Bennie down.  Frank killed a coyote he said that he saw a white coyote this morning.  Bennie didn't want to go home when he came here.  Today is Hannah's birthday  22 years old. 

 

January 30, 1892

Cool and cloudy today a pretty strong north west wind this afternoon looked like it was raining up in the hills.  Mr. Rand Will finished plowing and sowed the barley and harrowed it in this afternoon.  Mr. Crow, Will, Hannah and I went down across the creek after a load of wood.  Hannah baked bread, pumpkin pies, cookies.  She washed the wood work in the kitchen.  I cleaned my room, Hannah's and the dinning room and the granary.  Oscar and Charley down after some lumber.  Brad borrowed.  Arthur came down and brought the mail tonight.  Frank was going to take his men out to the hills getting ready for plowing summer fallow. Manday Mays brought my clothes from the washer woman's tonight.

 

January 31, 1892

Cool this morning bright and pleasant part of the day.  Clouded up this afternoon wind south east looked very much like rain sprinkled a little 8 o'clock  tonight books like it was going to clean off wind south west.  Mr. Crow killed some pigs this morning been catching in traps and poisoning gophers.  Rained all day.  Hannah and Will went a fishing got a few.  I got dinner.   Hannah give my hair a good combing tonight.  Ida and Bennie down and spent the day.  He is so full of mischief he don't know what to do with himself.  I got a letter from sister Esther, she sent Mr. Crow's overcoat up by express.  Will Ingram come after the balance of his turkeys and chickens.  Frank went out to the hills to get his teams for plowing tomorrow if it don't rain to prevent it.

 

February 1, 1892

it rained considerable last night and sprinkled some this morning.  Some cloudy with a strong south east wind the fore part of the day.  Mr. Crow and Jimmie Crow went a hunting Mr. Crow killed a goose, Will spaded the yard and I raked and smoothed it.  Will dug up the large honey suckle at the front porch the roots of it were dead.   Hannah washed out some cloths, churned, cleaned a goose, baked a pumpkin pie made soup for dinner.  Will cut wood this evening, he fixed the steps to the porch.  I fixed up an egg box and put 14 doz eggs in it.  I am tired tonight.;  Mr. Frank and Jimmie have planned to go hunting tomorrow.  Frank went out to where his men are at work today.

 

February 2, 1892

Cloudy last night and all forenoon, cloudy or foggy.  A heavy west wind the most of the day the sun shone out this afternoon, but it has been cool all day.  Mr. Crow, Jimmie and Frank out a hunting there usual luck nothing.  Will dug up some trees and plowed the old orchard.  Hannah and I washed and mended.  I washed and hung up some beef.  I made sacks out of mosquito net to cover it to keep the flies out of it.  I heard that Mrs. Thompson is dead poor old lady she has suffered fearfully for months.  Got that wrong she is nearly dead.  I haven't heard whether they have brought her up or not.  I got a letter from Mrs. Hoyt says that her husband is quite feeble.  Hannah got a letter from her sister in New York says that she is sick.

"The wife of James Thompson, a prominent citizen of Crow's Landing died of cancer at Oakland yesterday.  She was the mother-in-law of W.T. Carson and William Winters."  Modesto Evening News 4-1-92 

 

February 3, 1892

The wind blew pretty hard through the night.  Pleasant this forenoon.  This afternoon wind blew up cool and cloudy tonight very much like rain tonight.  Mr. Crow and Will got up two colts and tied them up.  Mandy's colt was awful mean they had quite a time with her.  She jumped over into the manger.  Hannah and I were busy all forenoon.  Hannah ironed her and I went out to the station this afternoon.  I got some oats, salt, coffee, lamp chimney, graham flour.  Mr. Sam Miller and young Strothers here  for dinner.  They went up to Franks after some horses and back here tonight.  Hannah and I came back by Franks from the Station.  Hannah, Will and young Strauters went a coon hunting without success.

 

February 4, 1892

It rained about a half an inch last night warm bright and pleasant this forenoon.  Showery around the mountains.  Sprinkled a little here occasionally this afternoon.  Mr. Crow and Will hauled some old fruit trees from the lower orchard and this afternoon. They sowed a little patch of barley and harrowed the old orchard.  I cut up a lot of brush for kindling wood, cut up 7 pigs for the chickens, spaded and raked the ground around the back porch.  Hannah fixed up and framed the Honey Suckle.  Hannah took an old clock to pieces and fixed it up to run. Mr. Sam Miller and Statthers left for home.  Jimmie Crow down after the dogs to go a coyote hunting they caught a coyote.  Hannah got a letter from her pa and ma and they sent a letter to Mr. Crow and me.  Mr. Crow, Will and Oscar out a coon hunting tonight.  Oscar says that the coons are catching the chickens.

 

Friday February 5, 1892

It rained some this morning been cloudy all day with an occasionally sprinkle been heavy cloudy looked like rain all around us.  Looks like rain tonight.  Mr. Crow and Will digging post holes down in the orchard.  Hannah doing some fancy work.  She gave the house a thorough sweeping.  I mended in the forenoon and cut brush for kindling wood.  Frank down for dinner he took Flora his mare home with him.  Jimmie Crow down they are all going out on a coyote hunt tomorrow.  Will wrote a letter to his sister in the east tonight.

 

Saturday February 6, 1892

It rained nearly one half of an inch last night been cloudy today with an occasional sprinkle.  There was one heavy shower wind turned to the west tonight and it is quite cool.  It looks like it rained heavy all around us today.  Partly cloudy tonight.  Mr. Crow cutting wood and choring around today.  Will, Jimmie, Frank and Arthur Crow went out a coyote hunting haven't heard whether they caught any or not.  I took a bath and chored around. Hannah churned and done the cooking.  Will went over to the post Office.  Mr. Thompson hasn't gotten back yet.  I expect that the old lady is pretty bad off as he would have been back before now.  Hannah fixed my hair up Pompadour style.  She says that it is becoming to me.

Partly cloudy last night.  Clear the forepart of the day.  Clouded up this afternoon  tonight quite cloudy.  Mr. Crow went up to see Bennie this morning.  They were just starting down here to spend the day so he came back home.  Will went out a hunting killed three ducks and a goose.  Hannah and I went out to church but the preacher didn't come.  There were a good many persons present, Eveline Crow came up and she was at church.  Bell Crow and her children and girl.  Frank Bell and children, Jimmie Crow and Children, Mr. and Mr. Wallace and family Mrs. Will Fink and child.  Gorge and Charley Fink.  Mr. and wife Love, tom and Laura Crow, Mr. Meddlin, Alice Walden and children and several others I didn't know.

 

Monday February 8, 1892

Cloudy this morning more or less cloudy all day clear and bright tonight.  Mr. Crow and Will finished digging the post holes and hauled part of the posts.  Hannah and I washed and mended I wheeled out a lot of dirt where they moved the posts.  Hannah done some ironing, baked light bread and cookies.  Mrs. Mays and Myra down this afternoon.  Frank, Ida and Bennie down this evening.  Frank came to bring the dogs from Jimmie.  I got a letter from Cousin Sarah Buckmaster she is in Tacoma visiting her son.  She is a cousin of mine.  Mr. Thompson came up tonight said that his wife is very low don't think that she ever will get up again.  Poor old man, he seems to feel his wife's sickness so much.

 

Tuesday February 9, 1892

A heavy frost this morning, clear and bright today.  Looks like it might frost to night. Mr. Crow and Will finished hauling the posts and have been setting them.  Hannah ironed and baked pies, I cleaned up around the posts and hung the meat and made new brine for the corned beef.  Hannah and I went out to the station, took a case of eggs.  I wrote to Wiley and sent a check back that wasn't dated right.  Hannah got a postal note and set for the delineator. I wrote to Esther Rose and Mr. Crow and I both wrote to Elwood chantry last night.  I got a letter from Nellie Rose today said she would come back and keep house if we didn't have anybody else.

 

Wednesday February 10, 1892

Cold and frosty this morning, but warm and pleasant today.  Clear and lovely tonight.  Mr. Crow and Will helping Frank get up the hogs to sell to Mr. Kittrel.  They got up 44 head.  Will went out to the depot with them.    Didn't get back until after night.  Hannah and I done the work and done some stitching on Hannah's sham (pillow).  Laura down and spent the day.  I went up with her as far as the gate and then walked back to Mays and got enough eggs to set two hens in the chicken pen.  We found a  hen setting under the wood pile this evening.  Mays went to Modesto with some dried fruit.  Frank Crow down here for dinner.  He said that Isadore Ward and Mary came over last night and was at his house.

 

Thursday February 11, 1892

Cool and frosty this morning, bright and pleasant through the day.  Mercury at about 60 today.  Mr. Crow and Will finished sitting the posts and went out and fixed the fence on the 80.  Hannah stretches my hat been working on the pillow shams. I washed and hung a side of bacon and filled all of the hens nests with fresh straw set a hen in the hen house washed the doors and door facings   we took the curtains down from the living room window and cleaned it.  I wrote a letter to Nellie Rose I have the headache badly today and tonight Hannah cleaned a turkey for dinner tomorrow.  Mr. and Mrs. David and two children here this afternoon.  Mr. David says the people are trying to make a road through his grain field.

 

Friday February 12, 1892

Warmer last night some frost considerable north wind today.  Mr. Crow and Will hauling lumber and working on their fence.  Hannah cooked her turkey and been stitching on her pillow sham.  I have had the headache badly.  I took some eggs up to Mays that I borrowed.   Jimmie Crow and Walter down after the hounds, him and Frank are going to have a coyote hunt tomorrow.  A trap here this morning.  Old Bill house run the two young colts through the wire fence, cut them some on the legs.  Hannah washed the usual work in the pantry and put clean papers on the shelves.

 

Saturday February 13, 1892

Very warm today. Mercury at 66 today.  The warmest day of the season.  We don't need much fire to night.  Mr. Crow and will finished putting boards on their fence haven't got the wire on it yet.  Hannah baked bread been busy in the kitchen a good part of the day.  She churned and finished her pillow shams.  I mopped up my room, cut up 5 little pigs for the chickens, cleaned the chicken yard, gathered up the brush in the garden and cut it up for kindling wood.  I went up to Mrs. Mays and borrowed some soda for Hannah to make ginger bread.  I cleaned up an egg case and put the eggs in it.  I got 74 eggs today.  I got a letter from Nellie Rose.  Hannah got a letter from her father and mother and from her sister and brother in law.  They had shipped their saddles.

 

Sunday February 14, 1892

Another warm day mercury 64.  Mr. Crow and I went down to where Will and Hannah were fishing this afternoon.  They caught about 25 catfish some of them pretty small.  Johnnie Conhen here today.  HE says that Mrs. Miller is still at her mother's.  The old lady is not expected to live has heart disease.  She is going to Dr. Burke, if she ever gets well enough to travel.  John Stewart here with a subscription paper.  Mr. Latta is trying to try to raise money to build a church at Crows Landing.  MR. Latta takes an active part in building churches and in church matters.  His son Dick is sick, has hemorrhage of the lungs thins it doubtful if he ever gets well.  The apricot trees are coming out in bloom.  Some of the blooms nearly out.  It is so early in the season.  I am afraid that the will be frosted.

 

Monday February 15, 1892

Cool, foggy or cloudy this forenoon.  This afternoon bright and pleasant mercury at 64.  Early in the season to be so warm.  Mr. Crow and Will are fixing up the checks out in the field preparing for irrigating.  Will plowed the ground back of the garden and Mr. Crow sowed barley on it for the chickens.  Mr. Crow and Will went a coon hunting tonight.  Hannah and I washed and mended.  She hemmed her a tablecloth made some lemon and custard pies.  I chopped up a lot of brush for kindling wood that come off of the trees in the garden.  I wrote a letter to Mrs. Hoyt.  Frank and Bennie down this evening.  Bennie is as fat as little pig and knows where the apple box is when he comes down.  Our old turkey hen has some little ones and so has old Flora some pups.

 

Tuesday February 16, 1892

Still warm Mercury at 63 cloudy until this evening the sun shone out while partly clear tonight.  Mr. Crow and Will at work fixing up the checks.  Mr. Crow brought in line Raek with a young colt.  Hannah ironed and rubbed the furniture in her room and my bureau.  Frank and Sam came down after the turkey gobbler and the sheep to take up to his place.  I made pie, cleaned the chicken yard.  I swept it, cleaned some in the orchard. I cooked a large fat coon Mr. Crow and Will caught last night.  The coon weighed 21 pounds.  Ida, Bennie and Mr. Ora Snedikar here this afternoon.  Bennie didn't want to go back home with his mother.  Mrs. Frame here today wanted to borrow money. 

 

Wednesday February 17, 1892

Foggy this morning warm today.  Mercury at 65.  A little cloudy this evening.  Mr. Crow and Will finished getting the ditch ready so they irrigate as soon as the water comes down.  Will plowing the orchard this evening.  Hannah and I have puttered around all day and not done much.  Tom and Laura down this afternoon.  Tom got a couple of trees Uncle Ben gave him.  Three strange men here one of them wanted Peanuts pups when they are a couple of weeks old.  Line Buck has a calf a day or two old.  MR. crow and Will tied up old Kits colt to gentle it.  Old Dutch, heifer was up this evening.  She is the fattest animal I have ever seen.  She is almost out of shape she is so fat.  Mr. Crow got up before day went a hunting caught a skunk.

 

Thursday February 18, 1892

It has been cloudy and sprinkling more or less all day about like a sea mist, dark tonight and sprinkling a  little.  Tonight looks like we might have a wet night.  Mr. Crow went up to the dam to see if there was any water to irrigate with a little stream coming in the orchard.  Will cleaning  up the garden getting ready to plow if it hadn't rained he would have hauled some manure and pout on and plowed the garden today.  He made a fish trap to see if he couldn't catch some fish.  Hannah made some pumpkin pies helped Will burn weeds in the garden until it rained.  We had a mess of turnips and lettuce today.  She cleaned the  buggy house, and churned.  I made new brine for the meat, cleaned the hen house made a ditch to run the water to the walnut trees and mended my dress.

 

Friday February 19, 1892

It rained a little last night, strong wind from the south and threatening rain all day, very cloudy, but didn't rain very much tonight, dark and cloudy  the wind has gotten further to the east.  Has every appearance of a rain tonight.  Mr. Crow went up to the dam to see about the water, some came this morning didn't run much.  He cleaned out the ditch, him and Will are pruning the trees.  They have pruned the grapes.  Hannah hemming napkins.  I have been choring around all day.  Jimmie and Walter Crow down this afternoon.  Jimmie took some of the dogs.  Him and Charley Haile going to have a hunt tomorrow.  We are getting lots of eggs.  We got 5 dozen today.  We have 4 hens setting.  Smut has pups so has Flora and Peanuts.

 

Saturday February 20, 1892

It rained some last night.  It was cloudy the most of the day with a strong south wind.  Showery around, weather warm.  Mercury at 65.  Mr. Crow and Will manureing the garden and plowed part of it so could plant some garden.  I raked and piled up the weeds and brush to get them out of the way.  Hannah churned and mopped up the kitchen and we cleaned the sitting room.  This afternoon Hannah and I went out to the station took a case of eggs and  brought back a box that her pa had sent to her.  Had hers and Will's saddles and bridles, her feather bed and pillows and bed clothes and Will's gun.  When we got back Frank Bell had brought her mother down to stay all night.  Mary Crow and her children were here after Flora and her pups.  Mr. Crow got a letter from Mr. Walthall.  Brad down today.

 

Sunday February 21, 1892

It rained a little sat night.  Foggy this morning until ten o'clock and then cleared off clear and warm.  Mercury at 66.  Mr. Crow and Will working with the water pretty good head on they are in the third check in the far field tonight.  Frank down helping them awhile today.  They got up Netts mule and tied it up in the barn with old Vislts mule and one of the Thompson mules had a fine mule last night.  Mr. Crow wrote to Mr. Walthall and sent him a check for insurance money on the Pierce place.  I wrote to Wiley to send us some garden seed and other things.  Aunt Eveline staid here last night and until this afternoon.  Frank Bell came after her we had a pleasant visit to get her.  Mr. Crow will out last night after a coon.  The dogs ran it across the river.  Will went over and got it.  Eda and Bennie won so was Brad.

 

Monday February 22, 1892

Foggy in the morning bright and warm through the day.  Mr. Crow and Will hauling dirt and fixing the checks in the first field to irrigate they finished  irrigating in the fur field and turned the water into this field.  Hannah and I washed she give the milk box a good scouring.  I picked two ducks that will killed and cut up a coon for the chickens.  I was quite sick all day with sick headache.  Mr. Worthington her for dinner.

 

Tuesday February 23, 1892

Warm and pleasant today cloudy this evening wind west.  Mr. Crow and Will tending to the water not very much a coming cut some potatoes to plant.  Will got the scraper and leveled the ground and harrowed it.  Hannah and I planed some radishes, peas, carrots and turnips.  Hannah and I have had a busy day.  She ironed, churned, baked light bread, cleaned a duck, rolled five rolls of butter.  I cleaned out Hannah's closet and straitened it up. Put away some winter bed clothes.  Cleaned up the front room went up to see Mays for the butter molds and planted  garden.  Helped milk and gathered the eggs.  A man her to borrow money.  I got a letter from Mrs. Hoyt.  Mr. Crow got one  from Mr. Walthall saying that he had gotten the check.  He sent back out insurance.  Frank and Sam down after a load of barley.

 

Wednesday February 24, 1892

Warm and pleasant the wind blew from the north this forenoon, but not very hard.  Mr. Crow and Will been killing gophers and squirrels where they were irrigating.  They finished irrigating this evening.  Will writing a letter to night to Elworths to send his ores up to home.  I have been busy the most done the work, cut up considerable brush went out to where the men were irrigating.  Mr. Crow carried me across the water on his back.  I was out where Brad was planning walnuts around his cornfield.  Hannah and Ida went over to Lewis Crow's today.  I sent Harry the last of the pomegranates, and some oranges.  Frank down today and took out the honey.  I done some mending.  I got 5 dozen and 7 eggs today.

 

Thursday February 25, 1892

Calm, warm and lovely like a summer day.  Mr. Crow and will plant potatoes here and down in the bottoms.  They killed some little pigs.  Will went up to the ranch after Sam to come down and help kill 2 hogs for meat.  Mr. Crow and Will went a coon hunting wasn't back at 9 o'clock.  I have been busy all day.  Cut up a good deal of brush.  I set 3 hens this evening.  Frank went to Oakland today.  Pike Crow and John Stewart here this morning.  Charley Haile here.  Mr. Crow gave him a check for fifty dollars to pay the Newman Preacher.  I cleaned the hen house and burnt some bones for the chickens.  I hope Hannah is having a good time over at Mollie Crow's 

 

Friday February 26, 1892

Another warm close day almost like summer.  Trees in bloom, grass fine and every this blooming and lovely. Mr. Crow cut up the hogs and salted them this morning, this afternoon he has been pruning the apricot trees.  He gave 25 dollars for the  church at Crows Landing.  Will and I made sausage and cooked out the lard and Will hunted for the turkey nests this afternoon.  Him and I cleaned off the orchard getting ready to plow.  I went up to Mrs. Mays to take her a dish of sausage.  She gave me a dish of cooked fried apples for  a change.  Mr. Pick Anderson here this afternoon staid until bed time and old friend of Mr. Crow's .  I hadn't seen him for 25 years.  Well went over to the post office to take a letter and Ida didn't get back today.

 

Saturday February 27, 1892

Another warm and lovely day.  It is almost like summer although it was foggy this morning.  Mr. Crow pruning trees this afternoon.  He helping Frank and Sam get out the mares to take to the upper place.  Mr. Crow is 68 years old.  He is very spry for one of his age.  Will been plowing and harrowing in the garden and went out to the station after some goods that Wiley sent up to us and to take a box of eggs.  Got a sack of graham flour.  I bake light bread, churned, mopped the kitchen and  porch, took a bath in the forenoon.  This afternoon went up t the Mays and got some eggs, been busy all afternoon. Hannah and Ida got back from Mollie's tonight.  Lewis got home from the springs, he didn't think he is any better.  Nellie Rose sent me some geraniums  slips.  Hannah got 50 cents a roll for her butter.

 

Sunday February 28, 1892

Another warm and lovely day not quite so bright as yesterday.  Mr. Crow been around home so have I. I wrote to Wiley, Mrs. Hoyt and Mr. Crow and I both wrote to John Patchett.  I got a letter from Wiley and a check in it for 20 dollars and 15 cents for eggs I sent him.  Will and Hannah went down to the river and got a nice lot of fish for dinner.  Will had 20 in his trap and caught two large catfish and he shot a carp.  Frank  came down and took up the mare and little mule.  Tom and Laura down to see us this afternoon.  Frank said that Ida was sick wasn't able to come down today.  A man that lives out on Mr. Moorhead's ranch down today after Peanuts pups.  She had three.  Old Rhaney cow hads fine calf, tow or three days old.

 

Monday February 29, 1892

Cooler this morning but warm all day a little cloudy in the after part of the day .  Tonight quite cloudy with a west wind looks like it might rain before morning.  Mr. Crow pruning trees.  He is done all of the apricot trees, but one.  Will finished plowing and harrowed the orchard and spading around the trees this afternoon.  Hannah and I washed.  I mended and set three hens.  Cleaned up an egg box and put in over four dozen eggs.  I was all around hinting hens nests.  Hannah ripped up the skirt of my black dress and cleaned it ready to press tomorrow when she irons, she is going to make it over for me.  John Stwart here to day.  MR. Mays and Myra down yesterday afternoon.

 

Tuesday March 1, 1892

A little cloudy the most of the day.  Commenced to sprinkle a little about 4 o'clock.  Showered on until bedtime tonight still showery and cloudy the wind in the north not a very good sign for much rain.  Mr. Crow went out to get old Bill shod came back by Frank's Iida gave him  Bennie's pictures.  Came on home and him and Will went down to the lower garden and set out some onion sets, cabbage plants and tomatoes plants.  Hannah ironed and pressed out my black dress she ripped up and is going to make it over. I chored around all forenoon and darned the stockings.  Hannah and I went up to see Laura and Ida.  We took Ida up some fruit, tomatoes and preserves.  Ida is sick.

 

Wednesday March 2, 1892

It rained nearly all last night and some this forenoon been more or less cloudy all day and still looks like rain to night about half an inch of water fell for this storm.  Mr. Crow choreing around this morning this afternoon pruning trees.  Will molds bullets and loading cartridges, cutting  wood and him and Hannah went to Crows Landing to take some letters, Mr. Crow got goat a letter from J. A. Crow saying that the taxes was delinquent on some land in Merced Co.  He wrote to the bank to pay it and sent the letter to C.P. . I got dinner skimmed up the milk.  I finished chopping the brush and I was marking a pile of lumber by the woodpile.  I have been very busy all day.  Made Mr. Crow and Will a saddle blanket a piece, turned a sheet and done some mending.

 

Thursday March 3, 1892

It has been partly cloudy today sun shone bright and warm part of the time.  Clear and warm.  Tonight Mr. Crow and Will went a hunting tonight.  They went a hunting this morning caught a large cat the balance of the time.  Mr. Crow a pruning.  Will a spading in the orchard.  He planted some potatoes here and planted beets and carrots in the lower garden.  I have been moving lumber and cleaning up around the woodpile burnt the trash and burned a lot of bones piled a lot of lumber, set out some beets and carrots for seed. I went up to take Mrs. Mays some carrots.  I wrote to the Modesto Bank and sent a check for 2 dollars and 15 cents that Wiley sent me for eggs.  I took off two hens one with 12 and the other 11 little chickens.  I got a letter from cousin Elwood, Hannah churned made four rolls of butter.  She has been sewing on my black dress.

 

Friday March 4, 1892

Cool this morning and foggy this afternoon a little cloudy the north west wind blew so we could make some ditches late this afternoon.  Mr. Crow went up to the ranch to show Frank how to prune the trees.  He was pruning here this afternoon.  Will been spading and raking around the trees.  Hannah finished my black dress, churned and rolled butter.  I baked pies, got dinner tended to the chickens been making ditches this afternoon.  A man her this evening to buy hay.  Hannah cut Mr. Crow's hair and whiskers.  We have made 6 rolls of butter this week beside what we used.  We have filled four cases eggs this month and set 10 hens.

 

Saturday March 5, 1892

The north wind blew very hard through the night, cloudy the most of the day, calmed down this afternoon.  Calm to night.  Mr. Crow pruning trees.  Will making ditches.  Him and Hannah went down to the bottoms to get  poles to make a chicken roost.  Hannah mopped my room and the kitchen, and made her a riding skirt.  I took off a hen with 10 chickens.  I took a bath washed the windows in my room, been very busy all day.  This afternoon I was moving and piling lumber all afternoon.  MR. Crow got a tag from the Modesto Bank for the 20 dollars and 15 cents that I sent last week.  We had the carpets up in my room and out a dusting.  I put down a new piece of carpet in my room. 

 

Sunday March 6, 1892

A lovely warm day.  Mr. Crow around all day.  We had company, first Will and Thane Ingram came, then Brad and Pike Crow then Frank and Ida, Brad left before dinner the rest here for dinner.  We had a good sociable time amongst us.  I went up to Mrs. Mays and got some butter for dinner.  Hannah had a nice dinner after the company left.  Her and Will went across the river.  Will took his gun and killed four large carp.  He brought then home for the chickens.  Hannah churned tonight after dark, so we wouldn't have so much to do tomorrow as that is wash day.  Frank and Ida were going out to the hills.

 

Monday March 7, 1892

A bright warm and lovely day.  Mr. Crow went to Modesto today to get a lot of things, he got some new milk pans.  Him and Will went across the river a coon hunting tonight.  The moon shiny bright a good night for coon hunting.  Hannah and I washed.  I cleaned up back of the woods shed cleaned the granary, store room and been mending.  This afternoon Will made a chicken roost, cleaned the brush out of the orchard.  Hannah fixed her a mother Hubbard dress this afternoon.  Will her and I caught the chickens out of the wood shed.  Oscar down this afternoon.  Herbert Crow here this afternoon.  Him and the Kmberlings came over to go hunting probably Mr. Crow and Will go with the. Tomorrow.

 

Tuesday March 8, 1892

Warmer, warmer, warmest mercury at 71.  It is like summer weather every thing looks like it might be fine and flourishing this summer, but I am afraid from the present prospect we will not raise much unless we have more rain.  Mr. Crow finishing his pruning today he went up to show Frank how to prune and fixed up some hen coops.  Hannah went out to the station took a case of eggs.  Bell Crow was there we had a pleasant visit with her.  Mr. Crow wrote to J. A. Crow.  Will wrote to Elsworth to send him his horses from Orange.

 

Wednesday March 9, 1892

Another warm day.  Mercury at 74 very warm for this time of year.  Mr. Crow and Will went up to the ranch and brought all the young mules down.  This afternoon Will made me a chicken trough and I painted it.  Him and Hannah washed and cleaned the little wagon.  Hannah washed windows all forenoon I cleaned the cobwebs down all around the house and cleaned the lattice work all around.  Brad and Judith down and spent the evening we had a sociable visit together.  Judith is looking pretty well.  She says that Willie Peasley is better she lives in Oregon.  She is going back home by the way of Modesto tomorrow. 

 

Thursday March 10, 1892

Another warm day Mercury at 74 some wind late this evening.  Mr. Crow and Will went to Modesto got a cultivator, a barrel of lime and a sack of shorts.  Hannah and I cleaned the buggy house.  I cleaned and limed the hen house.  Hannah went a horse back over to the post office.  We got 2 postals from J. A. Crow.  We haven't had any company today.  Mr. Crow got up at four o'clock this morning and went a hunting.  Hannah sent 4 rolls of butter to Modesto got 50 cents a roll.  She sent 6 rolls on Monday.

 

Friday March 11, 1892

Another warm lovely day a little murky, but bright and lovely moonlight tonight.  Mr. Crow been up at the ranch putting out poison.  Will fixing a picket fence across the garden.  Hannah and I gave the sitting room a thorough cleaning.  She  blacked the sitting room stove, cleaned the hanging lamp, took the lamp out and gave it a cleaning it had gotten some moths in it.  I have had the headache pretty badly.  Mrs. Mays and Myra down this afternoon.  Mr. Crow went up to Brad's and spent the evening.  Will and Hannah went out to Crows Landing tonight to a lecture.  Mr. Dunean of Newman is to Lecture on the battle of Gettysburg. I expect that it will be pretty good.  I got a letter with returns of a box of eggs from Willey.

 

Saturday March 12, 1892

Warm and cloudy all day, sprinkled a little.  Mr. Crow helped will awhile with the fence and then turned the water in the garden and irrigated it awhile and then turned it into the little field tonight Will finished his fence.  Hannah and I cleaned, churning, baked pies and bread, busy all forenoon and the most of the afternoon..  I set out some lettuce.  Hannah, Will, Arthur Crow and Oscar went a coon hunting to night Frank was coming down to go with them but his me came in with his teams from the Rucker land and he couldn't come.  Brad down after honey to take to San Jose.  I got a letter from Lizzie.

 

Sunday March 13, 1892

Another warm and lovely day.  It looked like a thunder shower in the west.  We could hear the thunder and see a very dark cloud.  Mr. Crow went up to the ranch this morning to tell Frank to fetch the mules down her to turn them in the pasture when he is down with them.  Then he came back and went to Modesto going from there to Stockton on the train.  Left his horse and buggy in Modesto until he returns.  Will went across the river and shot 3 fish for the chickens.  The hunters got a coon last night that we cut up for the chickens.  Will and Hannah went a riding this afternoon and set a turkey hen.  Pike Crow here for dinner, he spent the day with us.  Arthur down says that his pa is on a ranch and will get his children home with him.  I made some ditches to irrigate the peas and turnips.

Another warm day.  A south west wind clouds around this evening. Mr. Crow came from Stockton today he said all were well there.  J. A. Crow had going out to Lewis Crows to stay f few days.  Will cultivated and Harrowed the lower garden and he planted a few rows of carrots.  Hannah and I washed and mended.  We planted a few hills of water melons and cantaloupes and some pole beans.  I fixed the dogs meant in a barrel and put some barley in it.  Frank brought down some beef and I cut it up.  Frank brought Bennie down.  The men are harrowing the ground out in the 80.  They go up to Franks to eat.  Mr. Crow loaned 38 hundred dollars whilst he was in Stockton.  We have a case of eggs to take to the station.

 

Tuesday March 15, 1892

It rained a little last night and has showered off and on all day.  Pretty nearly clear tonight.  Mr. Crow and Will planted some garden in the bottoms.  Water melons, cantaloupes, pumpkins, beans, lima beans and corn.  Will planted some corn here.  Mr. Crow went up to franks and got some cabbage and tomatoes plants and we set  out some here and in the lower garden.  Mr. Crow got a letter from Lee Black wanting  him to come up to his ranch and hunt.  He will meet him at Red Bluff.  He answered said that he would go up next week.  He extended a cordial invitation for me to come too.  Hannah went out to the station took a case of eggs and got an egg case.  She ironed and churned. I washed and cleaned the rest of the hen houses.  Got a letter from my dear old aunt nearly 87 years old.

  

Wednesday March 16, 1892

A little cloudy or foggy this morning.  This afternoon warm and pleasant.  Mr. Crow went up to the ranch.  He pruned the young orchard and put out poison.  He says that they had more rain up their yesterday then we did here.  Will made a little gate and fixed the fence around the garden to keep the chickens out, made a trough to put the milk out in.  Him and Hannah went after bones to burn for the chickens.  Hannah made a nice lemon cake for dinner.  She fixed one old dress and cut her out a basque and partly made it.  A couple of tramps were here this evening.  I have been busy most of the day, cannot see much I have done.

 

Thursday March 17, 1892

It has looked like rain.  Sky murky all day with a south wind.  It has moved around to the north and blowing cooler then it has been for several days.  Mr. Crow went to Newman today to see about getting the pump fixed.  He turned the water in the orchard and was irrigating the trees.  He got a letter from J. A. Crow and answered it tonight.  Will sheared and washed the little jack all over.  Him and Hannah went to the ranch and got a load of gravel.  Hannah and I washed  Mr. Crow and Will  shirt a piece and her a dress and apron.  She cut out her a shirt waist and got it put together.  Will made mush for the dogs.  I wrote to Esther Speer and to Aunt Hannah Chantry.  We have to hens a hatching today.  Hannah got returns for her last box of eggs 17 cents.

Friday March 18, 1892It has showered more or less all day although not much water has fallen, raining now at bed time, looks like it might rain all night.  A south and southwest around all day.  Mr. Crow went up to Newman to take the pipe and brought Mr. Schenk back with him and they have had all of the pipe out of the well and added 28 feet more to it.  Mr. Crow has had the water in the orchard whilst he had to work helping fix the pump.  Will  went down and watered the cabbage and tomatoes plants and been helping them work on the pump.  He skinned the coon they caught last night on their hunt.  I set two hens and turkey eggs.   I took off two hens with chickens one with 11 and the other 10.  Hannah sewing on her waist.  I made new nests.

 

Saturday March 19, 1892

It showered off and on all day about three o'clock came up a hard shower, it rained fast and furious about half an inch of water fell.  Turned cool the wind blew pretty hard from the west awhile cloudy tonight and showering when we went to bed.  Mr. Crow went to Newman to take Mr. Schenk home.  He staid here last night been putting more pipe in the new well it proved a failure still pumps dry.  Will choreing around.  Hannah and I cleaning up.  We scrubbed out, cleaned up and the rain storm came up and it didn't do much good.   Frank down Will and Mr. Crow irrigated the garden where the cherry tree is.

 

Sunday March 20, 1892

Cool today with a north wind.  Cloudy part of the time looks like it has cleared off tonight for good.  Mr. Crow and will down in the bottoms this morning, they seen a wild cart track.  We were out in the garden filling up some ditches.  Will and Hannah set a turkey hen.  Hannah gave my hair a thorough combing and bushing tonight.  We are expecting to start on  our trip north Tuesday.

 

Monday March 21, 1892

A lovely bright day, warm enough to be pleasant, cooler tonight.  The river raised yesterday, but is falling today. Mr. Crow up to the ranch putting out poison in the forenoon.  This afternoon he was working in the garden.  Will fixed the garden fence so the chickens couldn't get in and mowed weeds.  This afternoon he went down to the lower garden and hoed the weeks out of it.  Hannah and I washed and I done some mending.  I hung some beef and made a smoke, took off a hen with 10 chickens packed mine and Mr. Crow's clothes ready for our journey tomorrow.  I done some ironing had a busy day.  Hannah churned and rolled 11 rolls of butter fixed my wrapper and her a waist and washed a blanket.  Mr. Lundy here and renewed his note.  Ida and Bennie down this afternoon.

 

Tuesday March 22, 1892

A light frost last night cool this morning sun shone out pleasant in the forenoon, but in the afternoon clouded up and showered all around, sprinkled a little in Modesto.  Hannah, Mr. Crow and I went to Modesto this morning.  Hannah brought her butter along and rove the team back she staid until averter dinner.  We went to Mrs. Allen.  Nellie Rose looks badly, Herbert is in the city.  Mr. Crow brought a set of buggy harness and set back by Hannah.  Mr. Crow, Willie and I called on Mrs. Semple, Mrs. Mamanery was there we had a merry time.  I went down to Dr. Remington and he smoothed a tooth off that the filling had came out.  We staid at Mrs. Allen's until after supper and then went down and got rooms at the Tyman House , everything  nice, clean and new.

 

Wednesday March 23, 1892

Cool this morning pleasant through the day.  A little cloudy in the afternoon.  Mr. Crow and I had rooms at the Tyman house last night.  I got acquainted with Mrs. Tynan and she wanted me to go in and take breakfast with her.  We left Modesto for Dixon this morning, cars and hour behind time.  We got to Lathrop still behind had to wait their sometime and then had to  their 3 hours and one half went to the Western Hotel for dinner as we went back to the train we went through a conservatory.  There was a woman by the name of Taft from Fresno along with us.  We got acquainted with her on the train..  She was traveling alone and was glad to fall in with somebody to talk to.  We left Sacramento at 3 o'clock 3 minutes and got to Dixon at four o'clock all seemed so glad to see us.  Mr. Hoyt looks well so does Mr. Hoyt and Mrs. Ferguson.

 

Thursday March 24, 1892

Cool this morning warm through the day a little cloudy this afternoon.  Mr. Crow has been down to the store with Mr. Ferguson part of the day.  I have been helping Mrs. Hoyt about the work.  Her and I went to the garden.  This afternoon Mr. Crow, Mrs. Hoyt and I went out to the graveyard to visit Willies grave.  Some nice monuments nicely laid out graveyard.  We came back by the park went around it.  There is more track to it then a park.  Came back by the store and I got weighted 158 pounds.  Mr. Crow wrote to Mr. Miller that he would be at Orland Saturday.  We are having a pleasant visit with the folks.  Mr. Hoyt got Mr. Crow a nice pearl handled knife for his birthday and gave it to him since we came here.  I wrote to Hannah.

 

Friday March 25, 1892

Warm and pleasant today.  Mr. Crow and Mr. Trenson went to Elwirth and to Meahill.  They were gone the most of the day said that they had a pleasant trip.  Mrs. Hoyt and I done the work had considerable company.  Mrs. Rockfort and Mrs. Snyder came in to see me.  They were some of my old sanitarium friends.  A Mrs. Stury and Mrs. Graves on too after they all left we went out a walking and went around town and came back by a poor sick old lady's house.  Called to see her, she is bedfast and helpless, has been so for a year and has nobody to care for here but a daughter.  If she wants to be moved her daughter has to move her.  Mr. Ferguson nearly sick with a cold tonight.

 

Saturday March 26, 1892

Cold cloudy with a strong south wind looks and feels like rain.  I think it is showering around the mountains.  Mr. Crow took a bath this morning and Mr. Hoyt took him to the station.  He started for Orland at 10 o'clock on his way to Mr. Millers on his hunt.  I hope that he will have a pleasant time.  Mrs. Hoyt and I done the work she churned , mopped the floors, baked pies.  She gave me a good bath and a salt glow and Mr. Hoyt a bath and massage.  She cleaned chickens for tomorrow dinner.  I have been reading when not helping her.  Mr. Ferguson slept the most of the afternoon not feeling , been so disagreeable we didn't go out this afternoon.

 

Sunday March 27, 1892

Cold and showery all day. It hailed some in the afternoon, feels very much like we would have frost tonight if it clears off.  Mr. Ferguson, Mr. Hoyt, Mr. Agee and I went to hear the Baptist minister this forenoon.  He gave his members a scolding about their actions.  I met Mrs. Ellis and Mife Emma Ellis  they seemed glad to see me.  Mr. Agee went to Santa Rose this afternoon and the balance of us went to church tonight.  The minister is still scolding  his members thinks they are not taking enough action to reclaim the boys of Dixon.  He said that Sacramento was believed to be the worst place in the state, said there was only one Saloon for every ninety persons but in Dixon there was a  saloon to every 40 persons.  There was quite a turnout to hear him.  Mr. Agee and David Durny staid here last night. 

 

Monday March 28, 1892

Quite a heavy frost last night cold all day today.  The sun shone in the forenoon and calm this afternoon.  A strong south west wind and cool and showery another frost tonight if it clears off.  Mr. Ferguson thins last nights frost injured the fruit crop considerable.  Mr. Ferguson let a hog's head fall across his toes we think it broke his large toe.  He has suffered a great deal with it. We have been putting it in hot water to take the pain away.  Mrs. Hoyt washed and I done up the work and we have done some mending.  Mr. Hoty is making boxes for the store.  Mife Lilly Rhem in to see Mrs. Hoyt.  We are bothering MR. Ferguson about sending for some old maids and widows to take care of him while he is lame.

 

Tuesday March 29, 1892

It rained some last night the wind had blew pretty hard from the south south westmost of the day.  A little showery and very cloudy all forenoon.  It commenced to rain hard pretty soon after dinner and has rained hard the most of the time since and this is half past five o'clock.  60 hundredth of an inch of water fell today up to an hour ago still raining and every prospect of a rainy night  from the looks of the sky we would think winter has just set in.  Mr. Fergusion suffering considerable with his broken toe although he has been at his store the most of the time.  Mrs. Hoyt and I ironed and I done some reading and mending.  Mrs. Hoyt made pies, grape, cherry and lemon and oyster salad, we had a nice dinner.  Mr. Hoyt painted both of his butter boxes.  I got a letter from Hannah she says everything is all right at home.

 

Wednesday March 30, 1892

It rained consider able through the night a little showery today.  Wind in the south the most of the day.  Veered around to the north west this evening and pretty cool looks more like clearing off tonight.  Mrs. Hoyt gave me a Swedish shampoo and a massage this afternoon, her and I went a calling.  We went to see our Napa friends, Mrs. Roxfurd, Mrs. Thamane and Mrs. Snyder we went down to Mrs. Fergesons store met Mrs. Norbeat had a nice visit with her and called on Mrs. Nie and daughter on our way home.  She is a poor afflicted helpless old lady.  I got a letter from Mr. Crow he is at Mr. Milers  he wants me to come up there.  I wrote to him tonight.  Mr. Ferguson foot is much better.  I am feeling fine tonight.

 

Thursday March 31, 1892

Quite a frost this morning clear and sun shone the most of the day.  Some cloudy this evening.  Southwind cold all day if it keeps clear tonight there will be a heavy frost.  I took a salt glow, done some mending.  I wrote to Hannah Isom, I got a letter from Ida and she sent me one that was for Lizzie Crow I sent it back this evening.  Mrs. Hoyt and I walked out around town.  There are some very pretty places here.  We went through the aristocratic part of town, came back went into Mr. Fergusons store and then we went into two dry goods stores.  Mrs. Hoyt bought her a pair of gloves.  We met the preachers wife Mrs. Jordon and Mrs. Brown.  Some of Mrs. Hoyts friends.  Mrs. Hoyt baked doughnuts and light bread.  Mr. Fergerson foot feels worse then it did.  We took Mrs. Zue some doughnuts. Poor old woman she is suffering severely looks very nearly worn out. 

 

Friday April 1, 1892

It rained part of last night and has rained incessantly all day, not very hard but a good deal of water has fallen.  5 o'clock this evening still a raining it is looking a little lighter.  Mr. Ferguson didn't go to the store this afternoon until now.  I have the headache pretty badly today.  I took a salt glow and been choring around a little.  Mrs. Hoyt done my washing and some for herself baked a beefs heart and angel cake and a plain cake gave Mr. Hoyt bathroom treatment.  She is going with me to Orland tomorrow if it don't rain too hard.  David Durms didn't go home today rained too much.  The next door neighbor played a girl her  a mean trick she sent her to Sacramento City on a fool's errand through the rain.  I like playing tricks but that kind I don't like.

 

Saturday April 2, 1892

It rained some through the night and until about nine o'clock this morning.  Cleared off and the sun shone out pretty bright for awhile though cool all day.  I was very sick all night and this morning with the sick headache. I got up and got dressed at nine o'clock and at ten Mrs. Hoyt and I started for Orland.  Mr. Agee was on the train and went as far as Woodland  with us.  He was to make a speech fruit cooperation.  We arrived at Orland at 3:20 and nobody to meet us.  They hadn't received our letter so went on the stage, the driver agreed to take us there although it was a mile out of the way.  They wasn't expecting us.  Mr. Crow, Mr. Miller and Mrs. Miller seemed glad to see us.  Mr. Crow got a letter from Mr. Tully and from Mr. Thierkoff.

 

Sunday April 3, 1892

Cool last night pleasant the forenoon showered with a little hail this afternoon.  We have had a pleasant day visiting together. Mr. Lee and Dr. Black, Mr. Miller and his wife, Mrs. Hoyt, Mr. and Mrs. Markham was and Ella Price with Mr. Crow and myself we had quite a houseful.  Mr. Miller had the headache pretty badly today mine is much better.  Mr. Crow, Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Hoyt and I went to see Mrs. Hall she was a sanitarium woman their  son and daughter was at home so we had a pleasant visit there. The girl is a fine performer on the piano, she played us some lively music.  Mr. Crow wrote to Mr. Tully and to Frank Crow

 

Monday April 4, 1892

Cool today with a strong north wind.  Cooled down towards evening.  Some warm but cool in the shade.  Mr. Crow, Mr. Miller, Dock and Lee Black went a hunting, wind blew so they had to come back after dinner.  Mr. Crow, Dack went out a rabbit hunting.  MR. Crow killed four rabbits and some birds.  Lee Black went a fishing wind blew so that fish wouldn't bite.  Mrs. Miller and I done the work and let Ella the girl wash.  I mended my gloves.  Mrs. Miller, Mr. Makham and I went down to take Mrs. Hoyt to the stage to take her to Orland so she could take the train home to Diixon.  We hasted to see her leave.  We stopped at Mrs. Markhams a neighbor of Mr. Millers until the stage came along.  There were friendly sociable people.  We are having a pleasant visit. 

 

Tuesday April 5, 1892

Bright and pleasant this forenoon.  This afternoon clouded up books very much like rain tonight.  Mr. Crow, Dack and Lee Black went out a hunting didn't kill anything came back.  Mr. Crow killed some birds.  Mrs. Miller not well enough to go a hunting, but he went after his sheep and brought them home.  Mr. Crow and I went to the corral to see the sheep and I went with him a hunting and to see the tubs where they boil there sheep clip.  Mrs. Miller and Ella ironed.  I done some mending and tatting.  Mrs. Miller set 2 turkey hens they built a house and shut them up so they cannot get out.  Mrs. Markham in and staid awhile with the children.

 

Wednesday April 6, 1892

Quite cloudy this morning a little sprinkle of rain warmer this morning then usual.  The sun shone out this afternoon, warm a south wind.  Mr. Crow, Mr. Miller, Dack and Lee went a hunting didn't expect to be back tonight.  Mrs. Miller and I neither of us feeling very well.  We took quite a ling walk.  I lathered my feet in hot mustard water and been making tatting.  Ella cleaned the kitchen baked light bread and pumpkin pies.  Mrs. Markham and babies in and spent the afternoon.  Mr. Sampson here after Mr. Miller.  He wants to get ready to go to shearing sheep tomorrow.  I got a letter from Mrs. Hoyt she got  home all right.  Mr. Hoyt at the train to meet her.  I got a letter from my niece Ether Skinner.

 

Thursday April 7, 1892   

Bright this forenoon, this afternoon close and cloudy looks like rain, heat is oppressive for this time of year.  Mr. Crow, Mr. Miller and Lee Black came back this forenoon from their hunt.  They staid at Mr. Finnells last night.  Dack Black went on home.  Mr. Crow out a hunting this afternoon.  MR. Miller divided sheep with Mr. Simpson and brought his sheep home.  Mr. Sliding came with him.  Mrs. Miller and I went to meet the sheep and went to the corral with them.  Mrs. Miller went a riding went up Stony Creek to Mrs. Brownells stopped while stopped to see Mrs. Simpson and went to see Mrs. Markham.  I wrote a letter to Ida Crow.  We got a letter from Will and Hannah Isom.  They said Willie Chantry came up with their horses.

 

Friday April 8, 1892

Close warm and cloudy all day looks very much like rain what little wind there is south.  Mr. Miller is afraid that it will rain expecting 14 sheep Shearer's her tomorrow.  Mr. Miller and Mr. Crow went to Orland this morning.   Mrs. Miller and I went to Mrs. Simpson's where they are shearing sheep.  Mrs. Miller and I out a riding all forenoon.  We went and called on Mrs. James and her parents.  Mr. and Mrs. Slovery came back by the school house stopped into see the school children.  Mifs. Clapp the teacher like very much of a lady and the children behaved very well and had good lessons on our way home stopped at Mr. Markham's and met Mrs. Will Markham.  They are nearly as numerous as the Crows.  Mr. Crow and I wrote to Will and Hannah and I wrote to Etta Heimer

 

Saturday April 9, 1892

A little cloudy this morning and then came up a fog cleared bright and pleasant considerable south wind this afternoon.  Mr. Crow and Mr. Miller rode around after the sheep this morning. Mr. Crow went over to Mr. Simpson's to see what time the Shearer's would be here they got here about 12 o'clock but Mrs. Simpson gave them dinner before they left their.  They commenced shearing about 12 0'clock 16 of the men getting along finely this afternoon.  Mrs. Miller, Ella and I  all busy all forenoon getting ready for them, baking bread, pies, cooking meat and beans.  Ella and I went u to them shear awhile, Mrs. Price and Mifs. Evelyn Price down this afternoon.  Evelyn staid the night, she was at a party at Mrs. Hamilton's last night and is pretty tired.

 

Sunday April 10, 1892

Pleasant this forenoon, cloudy this afternoon feels like it might rain tonight very cloudy and cooler tonight.  Mercury at 95 today.  Mr. Crow went up to where the Shearer's were shearing.  They finished shearing before noon.  The men here for dinner and then left for Mr. Browell's to shear.  Mr. and Mrs. Miller, Mr. Crow and I went down to the garden and orchard he has a fine orchard all kinds of fruit.  Evyleen Price here today her and Ella Price went to the school to practice for n graduation the last day of school.  She came home with Ella to stay all night.  Mr. and Mrs. Markham went up to see their father and mother this afternoon.  Dick Cotton went to see his mother.  Mr. and Mrs. Markham in and spent the evening, she has two bright children, Delbert and Roy.

 

Monday April 11, 1892

Cloudy with a north east wind all forenoon the wind changed around pretty near north this afternoon and we had a hard shower cleared off and sun shone out awhile blew up cool this evening and think probably that it will rain more before it quits considerable wind this evening Mr. Crow and Mr. Miller went up to Mr. Bronwell and spent the day.  Mrs.  Miller and I done the work and Ella washed we had to bring the clothes in and hang them on the porch to dry.  Mrs. Miller gave my hair a good combing.  I made tatting.  Mrs. Markham had her children in this afternoon.  Mrs. Miller and I picked the sage she uses it for sausage and to cure bolts in horses.

 

Tuesday April 12, 1892

Cool and pleasant this morning.  It has been nice and pleasant all day it rained some last night.  Mr. Miller, Dick and Mr. Markham are dipping sheep.  Mr. Crow has been trimming and  keeping up fires helping them all day.  Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Markham and I went up to seem dip the sheep and one sprinkled my apron finely, I had to come home and wash it out.  We have been having company all day and Ella is sick.  Mrs. Miller and I done part of the ironing and had the cooking to do.  Mrs. Simpson her 3 children, Alta Edna and Ethel, Mrs. Will Markham and Mrs. White Markham and two children Delbert and Roy and Mr. and Mrs. Thurman.  We got a letter from Ida Crow and answered it.

 

Wednesday April 13, 1892

Cool and cloudy most of the day.  The sunshone out awhile in the evening although it was raining in the mountains and black clouds in the west.  Mr. Miller, Mr. Crow, Mrs. Miller and I left MR. Millers about 7 o'clock this morning for Mr. Blacks ranch.  We came up by the old Indian Reservation and Thons Creek where some of my old friends lived.  We eat a lunch near the head Eastern came in and got to Mr. Blacks at 2 o'clock.  All seemed glad to see us.  Birdie Elmare is here and she sent today for two of his lady friends from Red Bluff to come down, they got here at 4 o'clock.  They expect to go a coyote hunting with the men tomorrow.  Thena and Birdie went out this evening to catch his horses.

 

Thursday April 14, 1892

It commenced to rain about two o'clock this morning, rained until nine o'clock not very heavily.  It commenced to rain then in good earnest and rained hard until three o'clock.  It has rained more or less even since has some appearance of clearing off tonight, but wind and clouds are still is raining tonight.  The men couldn't get out all day they expected to have a coyote chase but alas for human expectations they had to stay in the house all day.  Birdie, Elanore, Lena Hamilton and Sara Miller expected to go with them and they are more disappointed then the men.  Lee Black went to the cotton woods and hasn't gotten back yet.  I have been making tatting.  Mrs. Miller Crocheting, Mrs. Black knitting, Laer Millard popped corn for us and we have been trying every ways to amuse ourselves.  

 

Friday April 15, 1892

Pleasant today until evening came up a little shower.  Mr. Crow, MR. Miller, Mr. Black, Dock Black and Millard Black, Lena Hamilton, Sarah Miller and Birdie Elmore went out on a coyote chase said they had a fine chase the coyote came close by the girls.  They got excited and could hallow as much as the men.  The girls went to one of the boys sheep came for dinner and the men came here for dinners and then they all went over to Jhi and Dack Blacks to stay all night to start out on an early chase in the morning.  I have been very sick all day, sick headache, not able to sit up.  MR. Black and Mrs. Miller have been so good and kind to me.

 

Saturday April 16, 1892

Pleasant this morning rained some through the night.  IT rained about two hours about now and then the sun shone out bright been several hard showers this afternoon, several hard claps of thunder and two lovely rainbows.  Lena, Sarah and Birdie came home for dinner and at half past one started for the Red Bluff.  I expected they got nearly drowned as they would be out in the hard showers.  The men had a coyote chase until noon eat dinner with the Black brothers and came home in the hard shower.  I am all right been helping Mrs. Miller and Mrs. Black we baked and made pies and beaked light bread, cooked chicken, two fat old hens.  Mr. Elmore working in his garden.  Lee Black hasn't gotten home yet he went off after sheep some they had stolen.

 

Sunday April 17, 1892

A heavy frost last night bit potatoes, corn and walnut trees and young sprouts.  Today has been rather pleasant thought it looks like it has been snowing all afternoon up in the mountains.  Mrs. Miller, Mr. Miller, Mr. Crow and I had a lovely walk this morning.  In the afternoon they hitched up the carriage.  Mr. and Mrs. Miller, Mrs. Black, Mr. Crow and I went a riding down the anyone the mountains scenery lovely now whilst every thing is green.  Miller's sheep.  Mrs. Miller and I made candy.  We were having such a pleasant visit.  Lee Black got home from the cotton woods tonight, didn't find many sheep.

The north wind blew this forenoon, cool this afternoon, bright and pleasant.  Mr. Miller, Mr. Crow, Lee, Millard, Dack and the Blacks and Mr. Bradly out a hunting.  The dogs got a coyote and a cot.  They had lots of sport and a long run.  We got up early for them to start and their hunt.  It kept Mrs. Miller and I a cooking.   We got dinner for the family and visitors must got through when the hunters came in and then had to got to work and get another dinner.  Mrs. Chriss and three children, George, Ethel and Hattie here and spent the day.  Mrs. Miller gave my hair a good combing.  Lee Black burned the sore on Mr. Crow's face.  Mrs. Black churned, Mr. Elmore got us a mess of white mustard for greens.

 

Tuesday April 19, 1892

Today is very pleasant.  The north wind blew awhile.  Mr. Crow, Mr. Miller, Millard, Lee, Cock and the Blacks and Mr. Bradley out a coyote hunting, didn't catch many  but had a good time running them.  The boys all went home with Dock for dinner but MR. Miller he came back to Mr. Blacks and staid until after dinner ant then Mrs. Miller and I went with home over to Ducks we had an awful rough road to travel to get their.  A young man brought us a letter from Will and Hannah Isom and one from Elwood Chantry.  The boys Blacks are fixed up pretty well for bachelors.  7or 8 sheep Shearer's came in to night so we had quite a crowd.

 

Wednesday April 20, 1892

Very pleasant all forenoon.  Clouded up this forenoon quite cloudy tonight.  MR. Crow, MR. Miller, Millard and the Blacks and Mrs. Cummind out a running coyotes.  They started three coyotes but didn't catch any that they know of although the sheep herder said they did, said the coyotes ran amongst this sheep for protection.  Mrs. Miller and I fixed the boys carpet and mended up their clothes, went out and looked around some and we staid until after dinner.  Mr. Crow, Mr. Miller and I came down to Mr. Millers found two letter awaiting for us from Ida.  She says that things are looking pretty dry out on the plains when she wrote Dock Black and Will Quinmbley went to Red Bluff after sheep dip today.  So the hunter scattered off and we come on home.

 

Thursday April 21, 1892

It rained some through the night and most all day today about three hours this afternoon it poured.  I think it may have rained between two and three inches.  A heavy black cloud in the south, wind south.  I don't know whether it has cleared off or not.  Mr. Crow and Mrs. Miller has hugged the fire the most of the day.  Ellen done washing for me.  It has been a bad day for washing, but we will go to Dixon tomorrow and Mrs. Miller didn't want me to carry dirty clothes along.  Mrs. Miller and I have  been drying little chickens.  The water nearly drowned them.  She wrote to Johnnin Canther, I drew threads out of some muslin to make a comb cleaner for Mrs. Miller and myself.  Mr. and Mrs. Brownwell and Mr. and Mrs. Houghton here to see me whilst we were up to Mrs. Blacks.

 

Friday April 22, 1892

It rained some through the night, cloudy this forenoon bright this afternoon.  Mr. and Mrs. Miller, Mr. Crow and I left Millers ranch at 8 o'clock for Orland.  We visited around the stores until 11 o'clock and 43 minutes we took the train for Dixon, Mr. Crow met Ben Grafford, Mr. Hall and Mifs. Hall were there and so was Mr. Mizner.  Mr. and Mrs. Miller came to the train with us.  We got to Dixon at 10 minutes before four o'clock fount that place ablaze of excitement been having earthquakes said Monday night every brick house in town shattered left no chimneys in town.  Crockery ware and windows smashed, canned fruit and butter and medicine jammed a great destruction of property and still a shaking at intervals.  The heaviest earthquake in the annals of California.  Mr. Crow wrote to Frank Crow.

 

Saturday April 23, 1892

Considerable wind in the north this morning and cool this afternoon, warmer south wind and considerable cloudy.  Mr. Crow and Mr. Ferguson went oat to the ranch today.  David Dumas her sick today.  Mrs. Hoyt and I cooked this forenoon and this afternoon we went out to view the ruins of the earthquake.  It don't seem possible that the earth could shake enough to devastate such structures as we seen, the crumbling walls and crevasses in the brick is something terrible to contemplate.  We had three shakes of earthquake this morning, but has been quiet all day.  A Mr. Barker here today to see Mr. Crow about some jacks he says the destruction at Vacaville and Winters was much worse then in Dixon.  A Mr. Story died at Harbine Springs and brought down here to his home to be buried.  His wife is nearly crazy.

 

Sunday April 24, 1892

It sprinkled through the night.  Cloudy and sprinkled a little this morning.  A cool south wind this afternoon an earthquake between 1 and 2 o'clock in the night.  I don't think we have had any today.  Mr. Ferguson has been telegraphing all around hunting preachers to preach Mrs. Story's funeral sermon tomorrow.  He died at Harvin Springs and they brought him home to bury.  His poor wife is nearly deranged she got up to the springs the day before he died she thinks if she had been with him she wouldn't felt so bad.   Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt, Mr. Crow and myself we had a nice drive through the country looking at the nice grain and buildings crops are good here they have had so many lite rains.  John Beaman her today.  David went out to the ranch with him this evening. 

Monday April 25, 1892

A shock of earthquake today at Sacramento.  Cool and cloudy all day.  Mr. crow and I left Dixon this morning at 1 o'clock and 10 minutes got to Sacramento at 11 o'clock and left there at 12 minutes a past seven o'clock for Stockton.  Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt, Mr. Ferguson and Mr. and Mrs. Wilson went to the train to see us off.  Mrs. Northent came to Sacramento with us and she went around with us in the city.  She is a very pleasant lady is not young.  Mr. Harman and his sister Laura their a shipping.  I went around with her to the stores.  Mr. Crow and I took the electric cars and went out to Oak Park 3 or 4 miles had a pleasant ride, we got back met Mr. Govdson and he went to the park with us got to Stockton all seemed glad to see us.  J. A. Crow and wife are up at A.L. Crows on a visit. 

 

Tuesday April 26, 1892

Some cloudy last night.  A frost this morning cool and windy all day.  MR. crow went to the bank and to see Mr. Tully and went to pay for a barrel of coal tar that was sent to the ranch.  Sue Smith and I went a shopping a got me a silk and wasted a calico and battie a pair of shoes, skirt corset and stocking.  We got a letter from Ida saying that John Byers boy was drowned.  We got  M. Crows wedding cards he married a girl  by the name of Lena Carrey.  Nellie Smith went to San Francisco today to see a friend of here that is stopping at the Palace Café.  A Mrs. Rutherferd here to see Sue, Eddie Sargent her to see me.  Stella and Gover eat with Sue and sleeps at home.  Sue gave us one of her pictures they are good. 

 

Wednesday April 27, 1892

A frost this morning lit the corn, melons and other garden.  Pleasant through the day.  Some cloudy tonight.  Mr. Crow went out with Mr. Tully to see some property to loan money on.  Sue and I waited together whilst he was gone and Stella went down to town.  We had lunch and left Sue Smiths for home at half past 11 o'clock went to the depot on the streetcars and waited 20 minutes for the train.  We came home by the way of Tracey and the West Side.    We arrived at Crows Landing at 1 o'clock.  Frank Crow was at the station we took his buggy and horse and Charley Snyder took Frank home.  We went by Frank's and staid with them all night.  Bennie was so glad to see his uncle Ben that he didn't go to sleep until after nine o'clock.  Ida looks well but I had the headache as usual. 

 

Thursday April 28, 1892

Cool this morning a little cloudy the most of the day.  Mr. Crow and I came down home this morning.  Frank and Ida brought us and they went over to Oakdale to the  Pic Nic.  Hannah and Will seemed glad to see us.  Mr. Crow has been jobbing around all day and so has Will.  He has gone to the station to with a case of eggs and to get our valises we left yesterday.  Hannah Churned and molded a lot of butter took off a hen with a lot of chickens fit a dress for Mr. Mays and one part of the machine sewing on it.  I cleaned up my room and been cleaning in the yard when I felt like it.  I haven't gotten strait from my ride yesterday.  Will sawed some limbs off of the elm trees and fixed up my rose bush.  Mr. crow got a letter from frank Crow after he went to Modesto and the bank.

 

Friday April 29, 1892

It has been cloudy all day with an occasional sprinkle.  It is raining tonight.  It looks dark all around like it might rain good tonight.  Mr. crow went to Modesto to settle up with the bank.  He took a draft of a 6 hundred dollars that Elwood Chantry.  He took dinner with Mrs. Allen and Herbert Rose.  Will put out poison went up to the ranch to take Pedro and the cart, he planted in the bottoms, corn, beans and melons seed and made a chicken coop to ship some chickens in.  Hannah finished Ida's dress fixed 10 rolls of butter and sent to Modesto by Mr. Crow.  She sewed some on Mrs. Mays dress and cut out a pattern for Will some overalls.  I finished cleaning the yard emptied the rainwater and done some mending.  Myra and Stella Clary here today. 

 

Saturday April 30, 1892

It rained 36 of a hundred of an inch at Newman last night sprinkled some this morning.  A west wind this afternoon.  Mr. Crow and Will Isom went a hunting this morning.  Will planted beans this afternoon and Mr. Crow went out to the Convention.  They sent George Stewart, John Gunar, Ed Walden, Charley Fink and Homer Rucker as delegates for the Convention.  Hannah churned baked cake been sewing some on Mrs. Mays dress.  I have been busy the most of the day.  Frank Bell and her three children here this afternoon.  Frank and Ida stopped here on their way home from the Oakdale Pic Nic.  Ida says Edith looks miserable looks like she had consumption.  Mollie was able to be around again.  The frost played havoc with our garden they have had to plant a good my things over.

 

Sunday May 1, 1892

Cool a strong west wind sprinkled a little two or three times.  Cloudy the most of the day sun shine out brightly at times.  Mr. Crow and Will went out on the plains to get some sheep to put on the summer fallow land to eat off the oats.  Frank and Sam came down to bring the mules for Will to plow the 80.  Hannah went up to Franks and her and Ida went to church, then Frank and Sam came down for dinner.  Hannah and I wrote letters she wrote to her Pa and Ma, Kate Miller and sister Laura.  I wrote to Mrs. Miller and to cousins Elwood and Ruth.  Hannah wrote to Lenogga and Barbara of San Francisco about some chickens we will send in the morning.  2 dozen hens and a dozen roosters.  Will and frank caught fish, one nice one.

 

Monday May 2, 1892

Cloudy the most of the day, showers around it showered her lightly.  South wind until evening, wind veered to the north and blew pretty hard and cold.  Mr. Crow went out to the hills to see a man about bring his sheep on the summer fallow land this afternoon.  He hived a swarm of bees.  Will went up to Franks after a plow and harness.  Frank came down with him and helped hitch up the mules and started into plowing the 80 summer fallow.  The first time he ever drove 8 mule team he is delighted with it.  Hannah and I took up part of the carpet in the dining room mended it and put it back.  I brewed coffee and cleaned the chicken yard.  Hannah made a door to the hen house and went to the station with three dozen chickens; she brought in a pump that came from Mr. Ferguson's.

 

Tuesday May 3, 1892

It has rained lightly the most of the day sun shiny out late this evening, but the wind is still south.  The wind blew pretty all night and this morning.  Cool from the north west been pretty cool all day.  Mr. Crow and Will in the house.  Will washing his harness this afternoon.  Mr. Crow making up a list of his taxable property to send to the assessor.  Will wrote to his mother.  Hannah cut out her a wrapper and pretty nearly made it, baked light bread and cake.  I cut out Mr. Crow four shirts and got them based and some machine sewing on them.  I wrote a letter to Mrs. Hoyt.  Frank came down to bring some plow shears for Will.  Mr. Crow got a letter from J.A. Crow and answered it.

 

Wednesday May 4, 1892

It showered through the day considerable in the afternoon cold southwest wind.  Mr. Crow around home the most of the day.  Jimmie Crow down and took up his notes, gave Mr. Crow a check on the Modesto Bank for 4 thousand and 11 dollars.  Frank Crow down and helped Jimmie count up the interest on the notes.  Frank brought us some peas.  Will oiled his harness and cut around the fence in the 80 with Mr. Crow's help cutting the grass so the horses can't reach over the fence to eat.  Hannah finished her wrapper and cut out a wrapper for me.  She churned and I was busy tending the chickens and cleaning the yard.  Mrs. Mays down this afternoon, she is troubled with her rheumatism, she is going down to see Dr. Burke in a few days.

 

Thursday May 5, 1892

Pleasant in the forenoon only there was a pretty strong south wind.  This afternoon showery two rainbows it looked like it rained heavy in the north pretty near clear tonight.  Mr. Crow around this morning.  This afternoon he went up to the ranch.  Bennie sent us some figs.  Frank counted up the interest on L.H. Crows note.  Stice Clarys here and assessed Mr. Crows property.  Sam Brayler here for dinner he brought a mare and some colts.   Mr. Crow took them up to the ranch.  Will a plowing in the 80.  Hannah and I washed and mended.  I washed and hung the beef and smoked it some.  Hannah churned and made 10 rolls of butter.  She got a letter from  Lemagga relating to the chickens.  Mr. Crow wrote to Mr. Winter went to the office with the letter and found Mr. Winter at home.

 

Friday May 6, 1892

It rained gently most all of last night showery off and on all day showers light.  Will went to Modesto today he said that there was a heavy shower in Modesto today.  Mr. Crow went to Newman or rather L.C. Crows he wasn't at home.  Ben brought J. A. Crows Bell mare down to pasture he came back by Franks got his dinner got Mr. Masters not the interest on it counted up.  Mr.  Winters here this afternoon to see about paying off the note.  Hannah ironed and been sewing on my dress.  I done the work and have had the headache all day.  Tended to the chickens.  Will went to Modesto with Hannah's butter.  Will and Hannah out a coon hunting tonight.  Rm. Mays sick today.  Will said that Herbert Rose was sick.

 

Saturday May 7, 1892

Cool all day bright in the forenoon.  This afternoon half cloudy a cold northwest wind this afternoon.  Mr. Crow went to Modesto and from there was going over to Lew Crows.  Will plowing in the 80.  Hannah washed the kitchen and porches, we were both busy all forenoon, and we took our baths.  I washed the windows in my room took off a hen with three chickens, cut up some fish for the chickens.  I went up to Mr. Mays this evening after the mail.  Seen the Oregon Pheasants that Brad got George Peasley sent to him. 

 

Sunday May 8, 1892

Bright and pleasant the fore part of the day.  Clouded this evening and cooler looks like rain tonight.  Will and Hannah churned and went up to Franks after a cow said that Ida was sick and that Clara Crow had a baby Friday.  I have been nearly laid up with a lame back the last two days.  I have been lying down all afternoon.  Two men down at the river a fishing this afternoon.  Mr. Crow over at Lew Crows, I see by the paper that Mr. Purvice got the notation for sheriff, Lew Crow failed to be nominated.

Clara Crow was married to John Crow and their first child was John Bradford Crow who was born on May 6, 1892.

Monday May 9, 1892

Today is very pleasant a south wind, al little cloudy this evening looks like rain tonight.  Mr. Crow got home tonight he went to Stockton Saturday instead of to Lew Crows.  He wanted to settle up with the Modesto Bank.  Winters paid him 5 hundred and 75 dollars that went out the Modesto note.  Will a plowing in the 80.  Hannah and I washed she washed the window blinds and finished my dress.   I mended this afternoon and put new feet in two pairs of stockings. Mr. Mays down for Dr. Burkes address.  Mrs. Mays went out to the station this evening she will go to Oakland tomorrow.  Mr. John Yates here this morning.  Frank down cutting weeds in the bottoms.  Herbert Rose went down to the mine yesterday.

 

Tuesday May 10, 1892

It rained some through the night more or less cloudy all day.  Wind south until late this afternoon it blew up cool from the northwest.  Cold tonight.  Mr. Crow and I been covering the tomatoes and beans, Will covered the watermelons vines and cucumbers.  Mr. Crow choring around all day.  Will a plowing.  Hannah ironed and churned and went out to the station with a case of eggs.  I have been

busy all day.  I done some mending.  Hannah and I went over to the Ingrohance house and caught an old hen that was setting over there and brought I home.  Mr. Crow killed an old hen for us to cook tomorrow.  We have some little turkeys a hatching and a hen hatching in the barn.

 

Wednesday May 11, 1892

A white frost last night bit the potatoes tops some, we had the other plants covered.  Considerable north wind and been cool all day.  Mr. Crow went out to Denny's to get some plow points sharpened.   This afternoon he has been jobbing around.  Will a plowing.  Hannah and I have been busy all day.  I cleaned the smoke house, hen house, chicken coops and yard and around the woodpile.  Hannah and I went down to where the old turkey was with her little ones.  The old turkey hatched one and went off with it.  We took off a hen with 12 chickens.  Ida and Bennie down and spent the day.  Ida took an old hen home with her, Bennie is bright.

 

Thursday May 12, 1892

Another white frost last night.   I don't think it will do much harm.  Cool today a strong north wind.  Mr. crow worked on the fence in the bottoms this afternoon.  Choring around setting gopher traps and went out to where Will was plowing.  Mr. Crow is catching lots of gophers in his traps.  Hannah and I Hannah and I scolded the bacon and packed it in barley in the cellar.  I baked bread and made mush for the dogs, cleaned up around the woodpile, and made Hannah two cook aprons.  Hannah churned, cut out me a dress, done some basting on it.  She went over after the mail this evening.  MR. crow got Frank to go to Newman to see Mr. Trefts and Mrs. Shank to get the interest on their notes.  Frank, Ida and Bennie down this afternoon.  They took up some canned peaches and a piece of dried beef.

 

Friday May 13, 1892

Another white frost last night.  Today has been warm and pleasant.  Mercury at 76 this afternoon.  Mr. Crow has been working down in the bottoms fixing the fence.  The hogs got in the garden.  Will plowing yet Hannah sewing on my dress.  I baked pies, cooked hominy got the most of the dinner.  Cleaned the buggy house been busy the most of the day.  We looked for Mr. Shakelz to come to fix the well but he didn't come.  Hannah and I milk 7 cows in the evening and Mr. Crow and Hannah milk them in the morning since Will has been plowing.  Judith is sick again.  Brad has her in the city at a Christian Science treating her, I was up at Mays this evening to return some eggs that we borrowed last week.

 

Saturday May 14, 1892

Warmer today mercury at 74, cloudy tonight with a south wind looks like we might have a shower of rain.  Mr. Crow choring around, setting gopher traps and other things this afternoon he washed and oiled his buggy harness.  Will finished plowing in the 80 today.  Hannah went out to the station after plow pints for Will she churned and molded 12 rolls of butter.  I mopped the floors washed the doors in my room took a bath done up the most of the morning work and made must for the dogs and been basting on Mr. Crows shirts this afternoon.  Mr. crow got a letter from J. A. crow that Stacy Reed had paid over a thousand dollars on Lea Crows note.  Hannah got a letter from Lenagga what the chickens got 10 dollars a dozen for roosters and 16 dollars for hens.

 

Sunday May 15, 1892

A south wind all day.  It rained most all forenoon.  This afternoon we had one hard shower of considerable duration.  The sun shone out bright awhile this evening, but it is blowing pretty hard from the southwest at bedtime.  Mr. Crow was to see J. A. Crow and Trannin Crow at Modesto today.  They were all going up to Dunbar to Haves place.  Frank came by in the storm to take his Uncle Ben to Modesto.  Brad down to see us this forenoon he is afraid that Judith has the consumption.  I have been reading.  Will and Hannah went to the river this evening and caught a salmon, trout a good sized one.  Hannah wrote to her father and mother, to her brother Charley and to her sister Emma, Will wrote some letters.

 

Monday May 16, 1892

A pretty strong west wind all day comfortably warm today.  Will went u to Franks to Franks to take the harness and plow and to get Franks plow to plow the garden.  He brought down a load of gravel.  He has been plowing in the lower garden this afternoon.  Hannah and I washed and I mended .  She churned and she made ditches and irrigated the peas, beets and turnips.  We washed two quilts today.  One of hers and mine that I pieced up when I was 10 years old and my mother quilted it for me.  There are a couple of tramps her tonight going to sleep in the buggy house.  I put some cantaloupe see to soak tonight for Will to plant tomorrow.  Will says that the river has raised a good deal today.

 

Tuesday May 17, 1892

The north west wind blew pretty hard in the forenoon, warm and close this afternoon.  Mercury at 75.  The river raising the last two or three days.  Will finished plowing and harrowed and cultivated in the lower garden, planted some cantaloupe seed.  He cultivated the corn in the garden here.  Hannah ironed in the morning and we have been mending my sacks this afternoon.  In the forenoon I made mush for the dogs and turned and shook out over a hundred sacks, getting ready to mend them.  I got a letter from Mrs. Hoyt and one from my brother's wife and the pictures of Mannie and Rene her two little girls.  Frank and Ida and most important Bennie down today.  Mr. Mays down this evening.  Two tramps staid here last night.

 

Wednesday May 18, 1892

Warm today mercury at 88 not very much wind.  Will plowing in the lower garden and here.  He irrigated here in the yard.  Sam Rountree mowing the grass in the 80.  Frank came down this morning and got him started to work.  He brought Bennie down and he had a good time playing in the granary.  He didn't want to go home.  Hannah churned and when we got the work done we went to mending sacks.  We mended 156 yesterday afternoon and today some of them pretty badly eaten up by the mice and rats.  I cleaned up the granary when we got through whilst Hannah helped Will milk.  Sam Brayler and son here to see some mules, he thinks of buying some.

 

Thursday May 19, 1892

Warm today the warmest day of the season.  Mercury at 92 some wind this afternoon.  Will cultivating in the garden and helping Frank take some honey.  This afternoon he made a trough to feed the dogs in and he went out to Dennis to get old Joe shot.  Hannah finishing me a dress.  Sam still mowing in the 80 he thought this morning that he would get down before dinner, but he didn't get done tonight.  I was busy all forenoon about the work.  This afternoon I was basting on Mr. Crow's shirt.  I got a letter from Mr. Crow at Dinnba for us to meet him in Modesto on Friday.  Frank, Ida and Bennie down for dinner.  Mr. Mays down, said that he had gotten a dispatch that his wife's father was dead.

 

Friday May 20, 1892

Warm today mercury at 93 considerable wind it didn't feel as warm as it did yesterday.  Mr. Crow came home today from Hanford.  Hannah met him in Modesto got home here at night.  Will raking hay and broke the rake.  San finished cutting the hay here and went up to the ranch.  Hannah took 10 or 11 rolls of butter.  She got 35 cents a roll.  They brought us some cherries and strawberries.  I scrubbed and cleaned the cellar and yard been very busy all day, made a ditch in the garden.  Mr. Crow says that the most of Zanies grain is fine.  Frank down to see who Sam is getting along mowing.  The bees swarmed and went off. 

 

Saturday May 21, 1892

Warm and close not much wind Mercury at 96.  Mr. Crow went up to Frank's this morning to see about fixing the rake that Will broke yesterday.  Frank took the rake out to Dennis for him to fix it and he brought it back late this afternoon and Will been raking the balance of the afternoon.  Sam and Will put up the hay that Will raked yesterday.  Ida and Bennie down and spent the day.  Hannah finished my dress she went over after the mail.  I cleaned the hen house made mush for the dogs, but out two pairs of Drovers for Mr. crow.   Brad went down to the city today.  Oscar down this morning.  I got a letter from Mrs. Miller. 

 

Sunday May 22, 1892

Cooler today mercury at 88 considerable wind Mr. Crow sulfured the grapes he went up to Brads awhile he wrote a letter to Mr. Sheakly and took to the office.  Will Finished raking up the hay.  The rake broke and he didn't finish raking it Saturday.  He thought that he had better rake it today as it would dry up too much before tomorrow.  I irrigated the yard and busy the fore part of the day.  This afternoon I have been reading and lazy.  Hannah wrote to Kate Miller and Will wrote to Elwood chantry.  Will and Hannah watering the potato plants tonight. 

 

Monday May 23, 1892

Cooler today considerable wind.  Mr. Crow went out to Dennis to get Bill shod.  This afternoon we have been working in the garden.  Mr. Sam Brayer brought 22 head of stock and put in the pasture.  Will hauling hay.  They have five men besides Will working in the hay got it all stacked up and several loads hauled today.  Hannah and I washed mended churned and cooked for several men.  Frank been down two or three times today getting the men to work, brought Mr. Crow down a horse to work over to his Pa tomorrow he is going over after Lewis to morrow to get him to come over and work with the colts.  Mr. Brayer and his stepson her today.

Cooler Mercury at 83.  Mr. Crow choring around.  Will and the other 5 men hauling hay.  They finished hauling hay down out of the orchard and three of the men left and went up to Franks.  Hannah ironed and in the afternoon she took a case of eggs out to the station and brought Sue Smith back with her.  She came from Stockton today.  I have been busy all day we washed the windows and cleaned up the front bedroom for Sue.

 

Wednesday May 25, 1892

Still cooler a little fog this morning.  Mercury at 81.  Mr. Crow went to Lewis Crows today.   Will and his men finished hauling hay out of the 80 today I was very sick all last night and today.  Sue Smith staid with me.  Hannah had all the work to do and it kept her very busy in the afternoon she cut out the lining to my new dress.  William Crow and his wife came over to see us.  I was sick so they didn't come in.  I was so sorry I didn't know that they were here until they were gone.  They went up and staid all night at Jimmie Crows.

 

Thursday May 26, 1892

Cool again today a little cloudy with an east wind mercury at 78.  Mr. Crow got home from Lewis crows today.  He says that the carpenters are getting along very slow with their new house.  He says that Isadore Ward is married.  The two men that was helping Will haul hay took the team and went up to Franks to haul hay.  Frank down this morning.  I am still suffering with my head.  Hannah churned and done the work and took Sue Smith out to Nellie Stewarts this forenoon.  This afternoon May and George Crow down to see us.  A man came to see about painting our house, he was here for dinner, he took the contract.

 

Friday May 27, 1892

Cool today east Mr. Crow and will went to Newman and got lumber and shingles to fix the roof of the house. The limber to put down new porches.  This afternoon they took up the old porch and got the little porch and the old well fixed.  Mr. crow went down to the garden and killed 4 rabbits they are about to eat up the melons down in the garden.  Will caught two gophers in the garden.  Hannah basted up and fit the lining and then cut the outside, we helped about pulling up the porch and cleaned the hen's nests.  I cleaned up the storehouse and around the woodpile.  Mrs. Kilburn and Ada here to see us today.  Mr. Trefts paid the interest on his note.

 

Saturday May 28, 1892

Mercury at 86 warm and calm to this evening. Mr. Crow and Will  layed the porch chored around.  Will fixed one of the wire doors.  Hannah been working on my dress, she pretty mostly made the skirt of my new dress.  I was basting on Mr. Crow's shirts.  I baked pies, gathered peas and dug potatoes, I went over to the corral to see Mays if he had heard from his wife.  He says that she is much better and will be home next Tuesday. Brad Crow up this evening said that Judith was better.  Frank Crow down this morning.  Mr. Sam Brayler brought two mares and two horses to pasture them.  Him and his little boy here for dinner.  We looked for Lewis over but he didn't come.

 

Sunday May 29, 1892 

Cooler today Mercury at 80 a strong north wind.  Mr. Crow, Brad and Sue Smith and myself her tonight.  Brad will take her out to Sue Haile's tomorrow.  Will and Hannah went down to the garden after some peas and they went to the river and got some fish. Sue and I went up the road on a walk.  Some of Mays little duck ran off and came down here.  Sue and I drove them up.

 

Monday May 30, 1892

Cool this morning Mercury at 78.  A hard north wind all day.  Calm tonight lots of Dust.  Mr. Crow fixing to work with the young mules, he parted them out and went up to Franks and Jimmies, he wanted Jimmie to come down and help him with the mules tomorrow.  Will choring around the most of the day.  He helped me to take u the sitting room carpet he fixed the old turkeys next and set her went to the garden and got potatoes and peas.  I have been very busy doing the work and some mending.  Will and I took up the sitting room carpet.  I fixed up the sacks and cleaned up the buggy house.  Hannah quite sick this morning.  Sue Smith here last night.  Brad took her out to Susie Haile's today.  The painters here this afternoon and commenced work got the dinning room ready to paper.

 

Tuesday May 31, 1892 

A hard wind in the forenoon.  Warm this afternoon.  Mercury at 90.  Mr. Crow, Will, Frank, Tom and Jimmie Crow working with the young mules.  He has been jobbing around the balance of the day.  They moved the stove out of doors for us.  Hannah and I have been busy moving thins, all day and cooking.  Jimmie Crow down for breakfast.  Two of the painters been bushy all day cleaning and mending the roof the other two finished papering the dinning room, painted the ceiling of my room and the kitchen ceiling and walls, one coat.  They all four went out to the station for paint to put on the roof (since supper).  My room smelled so strong of paint that I cannot sleep in it.  We got a letter from cousin Elwood Chantry.

 

Wednesday June 1, 1892

Mercury at 96 and warm what little wind there is from the south until late this evening blowing quite a breeze from the north.  Mr. Crow and Will cut a bee tree and hived the bees this afternoon.  They made the kitchen steps.  Hannah and I busy as we can be cleaning and moving things for the painters.  This afternoon her and I  done some papering in her room.  The two men that painted in my room and they painted in the kitchen and they took the inside blinds down and are oiling them.  The other two finished painting the roof and one of the men went to Stockton tonight.  The river fell some today.  Mays down today says that his wife will be home tomorrow.

 

Thursday June 2, 1892

Cool mercury at 76.  The wind commenced to blow in the night and has blew hard all day and still blowing pretty hard tonight and looks like it might blow all night.  Mr. Crow been around most all day.  Will made a new porch before my room and new steps both on the back and front porch.  Hannah and I both busy all day.  This afternoon we mended the paper in the sitting room and one of the men went to Stockton last night hasn't gotten back yet, one of he men painted  the roof of the barn.  The other two varnished the inside blinds to the windows.

 

Friday June 3, 1892

Cool and windy the wind blew hard all night and all day.  Mercury at 76 Mr. Crow was very sick all night and sort of drowsy all day. Will finished up the steps to day.  Hannah and I busy.  She molded 16 rolls of butter to take to Modesto but the wind blew so hard Will didn't go to Modesto. I painted the floor in my room.  Hannah mended the paper in her room.  The men painted the boy of the house working at various parts of the house.  Mr. Burn Stackhouse returned from Stockton today.  Mr. Crow got a postal from J.A. Crow, Mrs. Mays and Mrs. Ingram down to see me.

Brad Crow and the man that keeps the canal house down to make arrangements about the water.  Frank down this morning.

 

Saturday June 4, 1892

Calm and warmer today Mercury at 80.  Mr. Crow choring around.  Will and Hannah went to Modesto took 16 rolls of butter.  After they came back Will fixed a beehive and Hannah fixed her a lawn dress.  I got dinner done some washing and mending and made me a skirt.  Mr. Crow got a letter from J. A. Crow with a check in it from him for 24 hundred dollars to be credited in George Crows note.  The men have painted the latticework the porches and steps and pretty well finished the painted on the back last of the house.  Mr. Stakehouse has been going about all day hunting another job of work.  Two of the men went out to the station to get paint for the barn.

 

Sunday June 5, 1892

Cool and pleasant considerable wind this afternoon mercury at 76.  Mr. Crow went up to Franks and staid until after dinner this afternoon the water came down and he turned it on the garden.  Will and Hannah went down the creek and cut a bee tree and hived the bees.  Will got stung by a bee and his eye swelled shut.  Mr. Crow wrote the Modesto Bank and sent a check given by J.A. Crow for 24 hundred dollars, he wrote to J. a. Crow and sent him George crows note.  I have had the headache pretty badly all day.  Brad Crow, Oscar and Howard Marsh her today.  The four painters are enjoying themselves a fishing.  They caught several catfish some nice ones.  The early apricots are falling off pretty badly.

 

Monday June 6, 1892

Cooler today mercury at 76.  Some wind in the afternoon.  Mr. crow and Will irrigating.  I washed and mended.  The painters finished the barn roof and are busy trying to get done.  The contractors, he was off trying to get another job of painting, he succeeded in getting Brad's barn roof to paint and some painting at John Crows.

 

Tuesday June 7, 1892

Another cool and windy day.  Mercury at 79.  Mr. Crow finished irrigating.  Will took a case of eggs out to the station and got Nig shod this afternoon, him and Hannah put down the sitting room carpet and straightened up a little.  I have been busy all day and can't hardly see what I have done.  The painters finished up here today.  They painted the windmill and left about three o'clock.  Mr. Crow gave him a check for 2 hundred dollars on the Modesto Bank.  The men had a gay time catching fish, reminded me of a lot of boys.  They caught the fish out of the ditch where the water runs and left them.  Hannah got a letter from her brother Charley.  Cap Morris and George Stewart here this afternoon.

 

Wednesday June 8, 1892

An all sort of a day, cloudy with a south wind in the forepart of the day.  A little sprinkle of rain.  This afternoon wind north still a little cloudy.  Mr. Crow and Will planting some potatoes and peas in the forenoon.  This afternoon they are helping Mr. Sheakly about the new well, going to perforate the pipe and see if it wont afford more water.  I painted my room floor and the three wood boxes, cleaned the yard and irrigated it.  This afternoon I have been burning the most of the time.  Hannah painted the inside of the water closet, her clothes closet, and the steps under the doors, table legs and other little things.  This afternoon she is washing windows.  Mr. Stackhouse and Mr. Gardener gave the old windmill another coat of paint.  Brad, Jimmie, John and Walter down.  Two Stockton men her to see how the crops are they are steamboat men.  Mr. Brayler and his man her after mules.

 

Thursday June 9, 1892

It has been cool all day all sorts of weather and south and west and north this evening blew hard part of the day.  A heavy shower passed around south cloudy here the most of the day sprinkled some.  Mr. Crow helped Mr. Sheakly finish perforate the well we have plenty of water now.  Frank down and him and Will sprayed the hogs.  Hannah and I washing windows and trying to straiten up a little.  We had our first mess of string beans.  Mr. Crow got a letter from the Modesto Bank with his not that he gave and a statement.  We have 803 dollars and 41 cents in the bank.  The painters gave the windmill another coat of paint and they left here today.  Mr. Stackhouse wife came to see him today.  Mr. David and Mr. Snyder here today and got a mule.  Brad down had lots of company.

 

Friday June 10, 1892

Still cool a strong west wind this evening and very cool.  We are having very cool nights. Cool enough for a fire mornings and evenings.  Mr. Crow and Will jobbing around.  Will cultivating the lower garden.  Hannah finished washing the windows in the front part of the house and in the dining room and we hung the pictures and put up clean curtains.  I gave the house a thorough sweeping all over and put things to rights.  Mrs. Mays and Myra down this afternoon.  Rene Allen and Callie and Nellie Rose came this evening.  Brad down this morning.  Mr. Sheakly went home today.  They succeeded and getting plenty of water in the new well.

 

Saturday June 11, 1892

A cold windy day until evening turned warmer.  Mr. Crow went out on the plains to see the grain.  Their won't be very much raised only on the summer fallowed land that will pretty good.  This evening he is down shooting rabbits they are about to eat up the garden.  Will cut a bee tree and hived the bees got some nice honey.  Hannah finished washing the kitchen windows and moved the table in from out doors, so we can eat in the kitchen. Nellie Rose Rene and Callie went down to the lower garden and got peas and beets.  I cleaned the yard and made the beds washed the towels, dishtowels and rags that we washed the windows with and various other things.  I brewed coffee made three bottles of cherry preserves and  busy all forenoon.  Eveline Crow, Frank Bell and the children and Roy and Archie Morris here this afternoon.  Mr. Crow got a postal from Mr. Wagenheim relating to the water rights on the West Side.   

 

Sunday June 12, 1892

Warmer today wind south until late this evening when the wind veered to the north west and cloudy feels very much like rain.  Mr. Crow and Pike went up to Brad's awhile this morning heard that Mr. Newson was dead he came back and him and Nellie went up to the funeral.  The services were held at Newman and he was buried at the Canal Cemetery.  They said that their was an immess crowd of people there, he was an old settler and once was an assemblyman from this county.  Pike came down and staid with us last night and went back to Nellie Stewart today.  Nellie Rose and I went down to the lower garden and got some peas and carrots for dinner.  Rene and Hannah got some peaches that were eatable.  Nellie Rose wrote to her mother.

 

Monday June 13, 1892

Warmer today cloudy with a south wind.  It rained some through the night and thunder.  Mr. Crow around all forenoon.  This afternoon he went up to catch gophers, where Oscar was irrigating.  He worked little red, calf.  Will fixed the fence and has been cutting sunflowers in the 80.  Hannah and I washed and mended. We went down to the garden and gathered a lot of peas, beets and carrots to take up to Frank tomorrow.  Hannah, Rene, Nellie and I went down a blackberry, didn't get but a few.  Frank and Bennie, Ralph and Georgia down this morning.  Mr. Lesher and Mr. Jacobson from the Paradise Gardens here today.  They are hunting fruit.

 

Tuesday June 14, 1892

A cool and pleasant day, a little cloudy some wind late in the evening.  Mr. Crow putting out poison.  Will hauled the weeds out of the 80 and been pulling dog fennel.  Hannah and I ironed and churned and I got dinner she worked on my dress awhile.  This afternoon Hannah took me up to John Crows and then she went to see Ida and to Laura's back by the station got a sack of graham flour and some egg cases.  Clara is getting along quite well.  She quite a bright baby.  Lizzie and Loyd  looks pretty well.  Nellie Rose and Rene Allen went up to Frank Crows this afternoon.  Mr. crow got a letter from J. A. Crow.  He wrote a letter and sent a check for 56 dollars to the S.J. Bank on the Modesto Bank.

 

Wednesday June 15, 1892

Warmer today mercury at 86 a little breeze this afternoon.  Mr. Crow putting out poison in the 80 and the alfalfa.  Will cut some oak wood this afternoon he went to Kilburn field to see the combined work, he hadn't ever seen one.  To night he is carrying his three stands of bees in.  Hannah and I went with him to the far side of the field to get one from there.   Hannah has been sewing on the skirt of my nice dress, she pretty nearly finished the skirt today.  I finished the machine work on one of Mr. crows shirts and sewed some on three others.  I done the cooking to let Hannah sew.  I washed all of the walks, glued the window blinds where they were broken and the towel rack.   I went up to Mays and changed some eggs and set a hen.  San Roundtree down to bring the Jennets.

 

Thursday June 16, 1892

Warm today Mercury at 82 calm until late this evening the wind blew up and cooler.  Mr. Crow shooting birds and him and will planted peas, beans and corn.  Will plowed and harrowed some down in the lower garden.  Will went up to Brads and got some mulberry's.  I made some pies. Mr. crow got a receipt from the city of Stockton for the city taxes.  Hannah got my new dress fit and sewed up.  I done the work and cleaned the hen house took off a hen with four chickens.  I made Mr. crow a pair of drawers.  Mrs. Moorhead and Fannie here this morning.  I gave her some honey and she got a couple rolls of butter.  Nellie, Callie and Rene came back this evening.

 

Friday June 17, 1892

Cooler today mercury at 80 considerable wind.  Mr. Crow been shooting birds and choring around.  Will choring and killing birds.  Hannah and Nellie Rose went down to the garden and have been sewing on my dress.  Rene has helped us about the dishes.  I have done the most of the work so the girls could sew.  Hannah mopped the kitchen and wiped the carpet in the dining room.  I finished Mr. Crow drawers and partly made him another pair.  Stella Conant and Ethel Crow  came this afternoon are here tonight.  Ida and Bennie came down this afternoon.  Ida is looking pretty large.  Frank has the headers cutting his barley so many women folks together we are having a merry time.  Ida washed, Hannah and I a nice gingham apron and made us a present of it.

 

Saturday June 18, 1892

Calm and warmer mercury at 83.  Mr. Crow and Will killing birds and jobbing around.  Will helped Frank work with the pigs.  Mr. Crow took a bath and I gave Nellie a bath she was sick.  Hannah and Nellie working on my dress.  Nellie and I made 23 glasses of currant jelly.  Frank brought us down two boxes of currants,  I got dinner baked dogs bread, irrigated the yard very busy all day.  I finished Mr. crows drawers.  Susie  Haile down to see me this morning.  I got some braid for my dress from Marriott's store and enough goods to finish my waist from the little wander. Nellie got a letter from Herbert Rose from the mine he says that the nights there are pretty cold.

 

Sunday June 19, 1892

Warm and close mercury at 94.  Mr. Crow around home all day.  He wrote to Elwood Chantry and John Patchett.  I done up the most of the morning work and wrote to Elwood Chantry.  John and Mary Patchett and to Mrs. Hoyt.  Hannah, Will, Rene and Nellie and Callie Rose went down to the river this afternoon.  Nellie wrote to Herbert and Hannah wrote to her sister Emma. I bake the dogs a loaf of bread daily. 

 

Monday June 20, 1892

Warm the warmest day of the season.  Mercury at 97 considerable wind didn't feel so warm today.  Mr. Crow went to Modesto today Will choring around.  Hannah and I done a large washing and I done a good deal of mending.  Hannah and Will went down to the river and went in a bathing.  Nellie, Callie and Rene went home today.  Mr. Dale and Mr. Philips here for dinner.  Mr. Dole put two horses in the pasture.  We found two hens nests the hens a sitting and Hannah churned this evening.  We keep the butter down in the cistern, keeps the butter pretty cool.  Mr. Mays brought us two or three sacks of potatoes to plant.

 

Tuesday June 21, 1892

Warm mercury at 96 considerable wind this afternoon and cooler.  Mr. Crow got home from Modesto today.  He staid at Mr. Allen's last night.  Will chopped wood in the forenoon choring around this afternoon.  Hannah washed her a dress and skirt and ironed this afternoon.  She went to the station and took a case of eggs.  I have had a busy day done the work tended to the milk made plum preserves stewed some green apricots.  Cleaned the two front rooms and the hall finished a shirt for Mr. Crow took off a hen with about 20 chickens, scrubbed the porches and busy in general.  A man came and got Semple and Roses mules.  Frank and Bennie down this evening.  Will and Thane Ingram here yesterday.

 

Wednesday June 22, 1892

Cooler today mercury at 82 considerable wind.  Mr. Crow and Will planted potatoes in the forenoon.  This afternoon he tended to the garden and Will made trays to dry fruit on.  Hannah pretty nearly finished my dress and I got dinner and finished basting Mr. Crow's shirts.  We have another hen a hatching today.  Hannah molded 12 rolls of butter to take to Modesto tomorrow.  Mr. Crow settled with Hannah up to this date for groceries.

 

Thursday June 23, 1892

Calm and cool until evening the wind blew up from the moth a quite strongly awhile.  The wind had been in the south all day.  Mr. Crow and Will has been down in the lower garden planting potatoes and corn this afternoon.  Mr. Crow been irrigating the sweet potatoes.  Will made a scare crow put down in the garden to scare the birds from eating up the corn.  Hannah went to Modesto took 12 rolls of butter got a tooth pulled and some filled.  Mrs. Chantry and Harry French home with her.  I done the work made a cake, cleaned the chicken yard and the hen house and been tending to the little chickens, the old hen has 9 and another hen has been trying to steam them.  News came tonight that Mr. Cleveland was nominated for president.

 

Friday June 24, 1892

Calm and pleasant mercury at 76.  Mr. Crow putting out poison.  Will chopping wood.  Hannah finished my dress and fixed my black dress.  I put the buttons and button holes on one of Mr. Crows shirts after dinner Sam Roundtree came after me Bennie was very sick pretty after I got there he went into convulsions.  I thought that he was dead and after he got a little better Jimmie, Mary and Lizzie came we worked with him until he got relief.  Sam went to the station and telegraphed for Dr. Stratton at Newman.  He was better when the Dr. got  here.  I staid all night with him.  Frank was irrigating the alfalfa.

 

Saturday June 25, 1892

Very pleasant today mercury at 86 what little wind was from the south until evening came from the north and quite cool tonight.  Mr. Crow been up today to see Bennie he is much better this evening.  Will went to Modesto after cartridges.  Hannah and Mrs. Chantry cleaned up the usual Saturday work.  I staid and set up part of the night with Bennie and been waiting on him today.  Mary brought me home this evening.  Hannah said that Nellie Stewart had been to see me today.  Frank finished irrigating the alfalfa and Sam went to Newman with the pump to get it fixed.  Lizzie and Loyd Crow to see Bennie this evening.  Irrigated the yard yesterday.  Will took some honey.  Little Harry French having a good time here.

 

Sunday June 26, 1892

Warm today not much wind in the forenoon.   Considerable this afternoon.  Mercury at 92.  Mr. Crow went up to see Bennie in the forenoon he is getting better.  Will Ingram and Thane here this afternoon Hannah and Mrs. Chantry writing letters.  Mr.  Van Winkle and Neperne here today and so was John Elfers.  Little Harry French asked a blessing before meals he does very well better then a great many older persons.

 

Monday June 27, 1892

It has been close and cloudy the most of the day.  Mercury at 88.  Mr. Crow went out to see the grain that Jeff Eastin put in from their he went to Cash Eastin's for dinner and to Newman.  He sold his wheat for 1.26 a hundred says that it isn't first class.  Will killed birds in the forenoon and he white washed part of my room on the outside.  Hannah and I washed I mended and she cut Mrs. Chantry a dress out and basted it.  Mrs. Chantry crocheting a wash towel.  Frank and Ida came down and brought Bennie he is better but cross and he has fallen off a good deal.  We had a turkey came off with four young turkeys.

 

Tuesday June 28, 1892

Cloudy and cool in the forenoon a little sprinkle warmer this afternoon mercury at 81.  Mr. crow down in the lower garden killing birds and rabbits and hoeing in the garden.  Harry French with him.  Hannah sewing on Mrs. Changry's dress she is assisting her.  Mrs. Chantry ironed so Hannah could have more time to work on the dress. I done the most of the work, brewed coffee, baked dogs bread made some apricot preserves gathered string beans, mended 12 sacks and counted and straighten and turned the sack pile up ready for use.  Mended sacks and stockings finished Mr. Crow a shirt and cleaned the white wash up after Will finished my room.  Sam down after Jim's horse.

 

Wednesday June 29, 1892

Calm and warmer mercury at 85.  Mr. Crow worked down in the lower garden.  Will, Hannah and I worked at the apricots, a drying them in the forenoon.  Hannah rolled the butter this afternoon.  Hannah and Mrs. Chantry working on Mrs. Chantry's dress.  I finished up Mr. Crow's last shirt.  Mrs. Dora Elfers and Ida Werner here this morning after apricots.  They got 85 pounds.  We put out 7 trays to dry.  Ralph and Walter Crow down after 3 dollars that Sue Smith sent out to Mary crow and we had forgotten.  Hannah will take Mrs. Chantry and Harry French home tomorrow.  We have had a pleasant visit with Mrs. Chantry.  I irrigated the front yard.

 

Thursday June 30, 1892

Cool this morning, considerable wind through the day.  Mercury to up to 86.  Mr. Crow got up early and went a raven hunting.  Been a choring around all day.  Will chopped some wood, hoed out the sweet potatoes gathered apricots this afternoon.  Hannah got up early this morning took her butter  to Modesto, she took Nellie Rose a box of apricots and one of peaches.  Hannah got back home by half past 12 o'clock.  I done up the work done some washing, cleaned up the room after Mrs. Chantry left.  Skimmed milk, gathered eggs and helped Hannah cut apricots to put out to dry.  We got a letter from Sue Smith , J.A. Crow, Georgie Crow, Frank Bell, and Helen and Beth Mair's were here this afternoon.
