Deason has over 25 years experience in family history and genealogical record research utilizing library, courthouse, and Family History Center resources of original records, published collections, microfilm and microfiche, digital media, and online record sources.
Since 2000, when he retired after a 35-year career of public school teaching of journalism (newspaper, yearbook, and desktop publishing; and photography) and history, geography, and English, he has been a family history researcher and writer and has published two family histories and created several genealogy-related websites.
He is a graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University at Nacogdoches, Texas with a B.S. degree in English/journalism and history. He also holds an M.S. degree in journalism from East Texas State University at Commerce, Texas (now Texas A&M at Commerce).

Deason is the author of two family histories (and a soon-to-be-completed third) and a Northeast Texas research guide and has conducted extensive research in East Texas, Kansas, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Tennessee. He is a member of the Camp Ford Historical Association, Wood County, Texas Genealogical Society, and East Texas Genealogical Society.
