F-Line Christian and Frena (Howery) Neff

By John F. Murray Ė Mar. 20, 2000

GENERATION NO. 1

.F Christian (Johan) NEFF was born 1718 in Germany. Christian died by 1771 in Dauphin Co. He married Frena HOWERY after 1743 in Lancaster Co., PA, Lampeter Twp. She was born about 1720 in Germany. She was the daughter of Hans (John) HOWERY. Frena died before 1771 in Dauphin Co., PA, Lebanon Twp. Deed Book-AA-1-492 shows Christian owned 204 acres in Dauphin Co. The Patent for this land states that Christian Neff, no wife given, died leaving issue, Christian Neff, eldest son and wife Mary; Henry Neff, wife Barbara; and Esther, wife of Christian Long. Esther and Christian Long sold land 13 Jun 1777. (Dauphin Co., PA Deed Book-K-1-404). See the next generation for the three children.

Christian Neff arrived in Philadelphia on the Ship Lydia on 19 Sept 1743. The shipís list 99A gives his name as Christian Neff, list 99B as Johan Christian Neff, and the same on list 99C, which gives his age as 25. (Hinke & Strassburger Ship Lists, page 341). There is no other known Christian Neff in Lancaster in that time period to match the deeds of Hans Howery that list Christian as a son-in-law and the following will of Reinhart Yung.

The will of Reinhart Yung/Young was dated Dec. 1, 1749 and probated Feb. 13, 1750. From this will we learn that Reinhart was the stepfather of Christian Neff and his unnamed sister. Christianís father died sometime after the birth of Christian and his sister. Their mother then married Reinhart but apparently died before 1727. Reinhart then married again to Elizabeth ____ before coming to America. She was his widow in 1750. Reinhartís will reads, "give my step-son Christian Neffe (sic) which is born of my first wife the sum of seven pounds and his sister which died and left one child, which is in Gearlesheim (Gerolsheim) by Burckholder's (sic) son, shall have seven pounds".

This will indicates that Reinhart left his two Neff stepchildren behind in Germany when he came to Pennsylvania in 1727. Christianís sister died in Germany leaving a child who was still in Gearlesheim (Gerolsheim), Germany with Burkholder relatives in 1749. This would indicate that Reinhart and Christian Neff also lived at one time in or near Gerolsheim. Richard Davis, who has done much research in German and Swiss records, wrote in an e-mail to me that "Gerolsheim is located next to Obersulzen and Dirmstein on the west side of the Rhine, just a few miles southwest of Worms. It is located about halfway between Ibersheim to the north and Friedelsheim to the south." This would be the same general area from which the B-Line seems to have come (see the B-Line). Davis further suggests that "Christianís sister was probably born about 1715 and married about 1735 to a son of Hans Burkhalter (sic) (1677-1752) who was still living at Gerolsheim and was a Mennonite minister there." She then died after that child was born.

Reinhart Yung came to America on the ship "James Goodwill" on 27 Sep 1727 signing his name on the shipís list next to Michael Siegrist and Hans Langenecker, both Mennonites. These three were at the Martin Meilin home on April 1, 1728 and signed the Nationalization Petition. Reinhart signed just six persons before Dr. Francis Neff and his sons (see the A1-Line). Surely Dr. Francis and Reinhart must have met there and perhaps discussed their Neff connections. I wonder what connections they might have made? Michael Siegrist was one of the executors of Reinhartís will. Jacob Siegrist was a witness to Henry Neffís will (B-Line) in 1749 and two deeds that conveyed Henryís land to his sons Daniel and Jacob.
