Confederate Descendants in Brazil

After the end of the Civil War up to 9,000 Confederates immigrated to Brazil to continue the Confederacy there. This left Brazil with a community of descendants of Southern immigrants, identified as "Confederados" in the town of "Americana". Contrary to biased reports, the Southerners did not move to Brazil to perpetuate slavery. Brazilian Emperor Dom Pedro II welcomed the Southerners in person when they arrived. Brazil needed the agricultural skills of the Southern farmers, especially in cotton planting. The community is still closely knit and maintains the memory and tradition of the Confederate South. Their web site is at www.scv.org/Camp1653 (text is in English)

Mrs. Neff in the 1755 Indian Wars

SOURCE: History of the Early Settlement & Indian Wars of West Virginia
by Wills DE HASS, 1851

"Alusion has already been made to the interruptions of savages in the Valley of VA, during the years following [General] BRADDOCK's defeat [and death in the French and Indian War of 1754-1755]. One of their earliest acts was the captivity of a Mrs. NEFF on the south-branch of the Wappatomaca. Having secured their prisoner & helped themselves to some plunder, the savages ( 14 in number ) left for their homes, by way of Fort Pleasant. On the 2nd night, they reached the old vicinity of the fort & leaving Mrs. Neff in the care of an old Indian, the warriors separated into 2 parties, that they might better watch the fort.

At a late hour in the night, Mrs. Neff discovering that her guard was pretty soundly asleep, ran off. The old fellow very soon awoke, fired off his gun & raised a yell. Mrs. Neff ran between the 2 parties of Indians, got safe into Fort Pleasant & gave notice of where the enemy was encamped. A small party the same evening came from another fort a few miles above & joined their friends in Fort Pleasant. After the escape of Mrs. Neff, the Indians collected into a deep glen, near the fort.

Early the next morning 16 men well mounted & armed, left the fort with a view to attack the Indians. They soon discovered their encampment by the smoke of their fire. The whites divided themselves into 2 parties, intending to enclose the Indians, but unfortunately, a small dog which followed them, starting a rabbit, alarmed the Indians, upon which they cautiously moved off, passed between the 2 parties of white men unobserved, took a position between them & their horses & opened a most destructive fire. The whites returned the fire with great firmness & bravery, & a desperate & bloody conflict ensued. Seven of the whites fell dead, & 4 were wounded. The others retreated to the fort. Three Indians fell in this battle, & several were wounded. The victors secured the white men's horses & took them off.

This was called the battle of the Trough. Just before the above action commenced, Mr. VANMETER, an old man, mounted his horse, rode upon a high ridge & witnessed the battle. He returned with all speed to the fort & gave notice of the defeat."
