(Source Surname: Gnädig/Gnaedig)

HANS LEONHARD GNÄDIG (English translation Leonard Gnaedig) and wife MARGREATE GNÄDIG immigrated from Germany to America. They arrived in America on 23 September 1732 aboard the Dutch ship Adventure. While children were present aboard this ship, none were the children of HANS LEONHARD AND MARGREATE. HANS LEONHARD was 28 years old (born about 1704) and MARGREATE was 25 years old (born about 1707) at the time of their arrival in America.

HANS LEONHARD and MARGREATE eventually settled along Codorus Creek, Colony of Pennsylvania in the present-day county of York. The exact date (day, month, and year) of their arrival there is unknown. Codorus was a smaller settlement not far from the larger settlement of York. Three of HANS LEONHARD AND MARGREATE’s children were baptized by the minister of and recorded in the records of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in York: son JOSEPH in 1739, son ISAAC in 1741 and son JOHN HENDRICH in 1743. LEONHARD and MARGREATE’s middle son, ISAAC, is the first of our family line born on American soil and the first generation of American Needy’s.

By March 1766 at the age of 25, ISAAC GNÄDIG migrated to Hagerstown, Washington County, Maryland (in 1766 this community was Elizabeth Town, Frederick County, Colony of Maryland). The Colony of Maryland was established by an English grant to George Calvert, the first Lord Baltimore; most of the eastern portion of the Colony was made up of English settlers. However, in addition to the western migration of English speaking peoples within the colony, numerous German settlements did exist; Elizabeth Town was one such settlement which had its beginnings in 1739. During the years immediately following the American Revolutionary War and the establishment of a legal system within the United States, Maryland established English as the language of the legal system of the state. During this period ISAAC’s surname of GNÄDIG was basically difficult to understand by English-speaking peoples when spoken and therefore likewise difficult to put into written form. It is during this period that Isaac and his children had their names recorded as Needy, Kneedy, Kneady, Kneedey, Kneadey, Neady, and various other forms. The majority of the descendants adopted NEEDY as the surname; one son of Isaac adopted KNEEDY and one grandson adopted NEADY.

The surname GNAEDIG does appear in birth/baptismal records from the latter half of the 18th century in America and in current-day telephone books in the United States. While these GNAEDIGs maybe distantly related to ISAAC and because ISAAC’s surname was “Americanized,” it is believed that these GNAEDIGs are descended from either ISAAC’s two brothers, other GNAEDIGs who immigrated in the second half of the 18th century, or GNAEDIGs who might have immigrated during the 19th century and early 20th century. At least six other GNÄDIGs in addition to HANS LEONHARD immigrated to America during the 1700s: ADAM GNÄDIG in 1732, JOHANNES GNÄDIG and MATHIAS GNÄDIG in 1753, and HAN LEONARD GNÄDIG, ADAM GNÄDIG and DANIEL GNÄDIG in 1754. The relationship among these GNÄDIGs and to our family line are unknown at this time. The general consensus is that only ISAAC’s surname and subsequently his family-line had the surname changed. For this reason the relationship to ISAAC of these other GNAEDIGs has not been researched.

Once in Hagerstown, ISAAC helped with the growth of not only his immediate family but the town as well. In 1803 the newspaper (or broadside) of Elizabeth Town/Hagerstown listed letters to individuals waiting to be picked up by the recipient at the post office; one such letter was addressed to ISAAC GNÄDIG, stone mason. The German Reformed Congregation built within the town limits of Elizabeth Town was constructed of stone, therefore we speculate that Isaac did the stone work on this church. In 1874 upon the 100th anniversary of the church, the cornerstone to the original building was removed and examined. This examination revealed a listing of the initial members of the congregation – ISAAC GNÄDIG is included on that list. ISAAC married ELIZABETH (maiden name unknown); whether ISAAC married ELIZABETH before he migrated to Hagerstown or after is unknown. ISAAC died in 1804 and ELIZABETH died in 1819. Beginning in 1768 ISAAC and ELIZABETH had the following eight children:
