Mrs. William J. Beatty - Mrs. Martha Beatty, wife of William J. Beatty, died at her residence, 516 South Walnut
street, Tuesday morning. Mrs. Beatty was a native of England and came to this country over twenty-five years
ago. For a number of years the family resided on West Gay street. During her residence in West Chester she had
attended the First Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member. She is survived by her husband and three
children, Mrs. ALice E. Bullock, who resides at home; William J. Beatty, of Philadelphia, and James Beatty, of
San Jose, Cal. Mrs. Beatty was in her 79th year, and if she had lived until the 27th of next May, she would have
been married fifty years.
BEATTY - In West Chester, on March 22d, 1910, Martha, wife of William J. Beatty, in the 79th year of her age.

Daily Local News 26 March 1910
At her late home on South Walnut street, services were conducted yesterday aftrennon over the body of Mrs.
William J. Beatty by the Rev. Washington R. Laird, Ph. D., pastor of the First Presbyterian Church and interment

solos, I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say, and Sometime the Siver Cord Will Break. Flowers were presented by the
Brotherhood of the First Presbyterian Church, the ladies of the faculty at the State Normal School and a number
of friends. Pall-bearers were R. Jones Patrick, former Clerk of Courts, and Chalkley C. Hipple, neighbors; James
H. Cudlipp, of Baltimore, and George Buxton, who had known Mrs. Beatty when she and her husband lived in
England; William A. Heckenroth and E. L. McKinstry, of the First Presbyterian Church.
CLUE: It is mentioned that George Buxton knew her when she was in England and there is a Harry Buxton,
formerly of West Chester, PA who went to San Jose, California with Marthas son James.

Reli: She was raised Scotch Presbyterian, then joined the Church of England, upon coming to America, she went
to the Episcopal Church.went to Trinity Church Sunday School11,8
Her knickname was Dee. She was probably named after Alice Neal, who was her mother Marthas witness for her
marriage certificate. (Presumably Marthas sister.)
She lived either right next to or across the street from her future husband (23 and 24 Siddals Road.)
According to Mary Yearsley Hoopes Neff: Edith was adopted by Alice, although she was almost the same age as
her step mother. [This doesnt seem to jibe with the birthdates I have ?] When Alice went to America, she was
pregnant with Martha. She met her parents who were already here. She brought over her step-daughter, whom she
had adopted (the child of Frederick Bullock and his first wife.) Alice came over with her parents and two
brothers, as well as her daughters and step-daughter.[this may have been slightly different trips.]
I found a record of Alice Bullock, on the S.S. Haverford, sailing from Liverpool, Nov. 11, 1903 arriving at Port
Nov. 23, 1903. Address is listed as 373 West Gay St. West Chester, PA [this probably is 323 West Chester]10. It
may also list a brother Emil Henlin/Winlin? Why did she make this trip to England? To find out about Frederick?
Phyllis thinks that Frederick was dead by this point and the trip was just to visit friends. In the West Chester
Directory, Alice Bullock is listed as a nurse at 333 West Gay Street, West Chester, PA. That could be either her
home address was written down wrong (323 W. Gay St.) or that she lived at 323 and worked at 333.
St. Peter, the church that they were married in is situated near the southern extremity of the town [St Peter Street]
and is thought to be the church mentioned in the time of King Stephen [reigned 1135-1154] and dedicated to the
apostle. In 1530 a chapel was founded by Robert Liversage of Derby, a dyer. Living a vicarage: when Darley
Abbey dissolved advowson granted to the Corporation. Steeple contains 6 bells. Villages of Normanton, Bolton
and Litchurch belong to the parish. http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/terrace/pd65/dby/parish_derby.htm
As with many churches, the historical parish records and registers are not kept at the church. These are located at
the county
offices at Matlock. The address is:

She was born in 1865 according to her baptismal certificate, not 1866 like the census states.
Where she used to live on 323 West Gay Street West Chester, PA was two doors away from the house that
Horace Pippin moved into around 1920. She had moved out of there before 1910, however.

He bought a movie theater early on in the industry. He was one of the first ones. As he made money then he
bought another and another. It may have been San Jose, California that he settled in.
In 1955, Alice Beatty Hoopes, her daughter Mary Hoopes Neff and grand-daughter Phyllis Neff went on a train
trip across the US. Alice made a point to go visit her brother in CA. He was very ill at the time and the day after
they visited, he died. He had hung on long enough to get to see them.

That she is Marthas sister is based on Alice being listed on the marriage certificate as Marthas witness. It is a
guess only and needs to be confirmed.

5. Daily Local - West Chester, PA April 27 1876 - The Hoopes Family - Concerning this numerous family the last
issue of the Doylestown Intelligencer has the following (handwritten note of April 27, 1876)
In 1683 Daniel Hoopes came over from England and settled in Bucks county, and probably remained here for the
rest of his life. Soon after coming over he bought a farm for his son Daniel, in Westtown, Chester county. There
the son settled, married and died, and there his descendants still live, the farm having never been sold. A house
built by Daniel in 1723 still stands, but is now used as a tenant house. The barn, built in 1872 was torn down in
1864. The Hoopes family is quite numerous in Chester county, but none of the name remains in Bucks. Like the
Dilworths ad Gheens they have been transferred almost bodily to our sister county.
Village Record April 6, 1825- Obituary
Died, in Thornbur, (not Westtown) on the morning of the 21st of 3d month Joshua Hoopes, aged 88 years and 7
months; the oldest of the name of Hoopes in the country. At Downingtown, on the evening of the 11th of same,
granddaughter of the above; aged between 3 and 4 years. In Sadsbury, on the 25th of the same Francis W.
Hoopes, grandson of the above Joshua; age near thirty years (not 40 as stated) He has left a widow and three
small children. As instances of longevity are occasionally noticed, the following my not be uninteresting. Daniel
Hoopes grandfather of the above named Joshua Hoopes, was married in 1696. The issue of that marriage was
seventeen children; nine of whose ages averaged more than 84 years; and seven of the nine were living about 100
years after the union of their parents. The last of them died about 120 years after her parents marriage. The sum of
the ages amounts to about 1036 years. If we add the ages of Daniel and his wife, we have about 1200 years. There
are probably very few instances in modern times of the immediate issue of a single marriage enjoying 1036 years
of life. Daniel when a boy came into this country with his father Joshua Hoopes, in company with William Penn.
Joshua took an active part in the Government; it also appears that Daniel was a member of the Legislature in the
years 1708-9; Since which the family seem not to have engaged much in public business. From Daniel are
descended all the Hoopes of America.
HBH March 26, 1942 - Joshua Hoopes, and his wife Isabel [mistake??] of Yorkshire, England, settled in Bucks
County PA in 1683. Their children were Daniel, Margaret and Christian. Daniel Settled in Chester County, PA

Hoopes, died suddenly this morning at her home on Meeting House road, Caln township, in her 49th year. Mrs.
Hoopes had been under a physicians care for a heart condition, but she had been able to be about as usual up until
last evenig. A heart attack was the cause of her death. Mrs. Hoopes was a daughter of Hayes W. Ash, of Caln
township, and the late Mary Ash. She was born in Coatesville and lived in this vacinity all her life. She was a
graduate of Coatesville High school and was a member of Olivet Methodist church and the Auxiliary of the

Daily Local News 17 Feb 1914 - E. Malin Hoopes, of this place, celebrated the 83rd anniversary of his birth
yesterday, but it was in a quiet manner. He was the recipient of many congratulatory calls from friends and
relatives and is still being congratulated upon his good health today.
Daily Local News 9 Aug, 1915 - E. MALIN HOOPES After an illness of just a month E. Malin Hoopes, one of
the best known and most highly respected business men of West Chester, died Saturday afternoon at three oclock,
in his 85th year. During his life he had enjoyed remarkable health, and was able to be on regular duty far past the
time of life when most men find themselves incapacitated. Because of his genial personality and his strict
integrity he enjoyed the friendship and confidence of a large circle of acquaintances. He was born in East
Bradford, February 15th, 1831 on what is now the farm of Hugh, Abernethy, near Copeland School, and there he
spent the early part of his life. In 1864 he bought a business stand on West Gay street, from George Townsend,
now of California, and there he took charge and remained in control for the better part of three score years. He
paid strict attention to the details, and by constant endeavor and much patience he prospered and continued while
practically every other business stand in the block changed owners and the whole commercial aspect of the town
was revised. He was a consistent member of Chestnut Street Friends Meeting, attending regularly and showing
much devotion to the principles of the Society, but taking no active part and showing a tendency to decline such
offers of prominence as were extended to him. Although he might have been on many important committees in
Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, or a traveling minister of note, he preferred to be merely a quiet worshiper, living in
an exemplary way and being satisfied to practice Christianity in his daily life rather than to preach sermons. In his
family life he showed the same devotion as in his meeting and business, and the home circle know him at his
best, he being fondly loved by those nearest to him. In 1857, he married Phebe Davis, of near Coatesville, a
daughter of James and Abigail Davis, the marriage taking place in Caln Meeting House, and they lived together
happily until her death, which occurred seven years ago. A son and daughter born to them died in childhood.
Three daughters are living; Caroline Hoopes Brinton, widow of Ralps (Ralph?) Lee Brinton, West Chester; Anna
Hoopes Smedley, wife of Horace W. Smedley, Ardmore; Elizabeth Hoopes Brown, wife of Samuel H. Brown, a
teacher in Westtown Boarding School. There are also five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Ralston R.
Hoopes is the only surviving brother.

has been appointed visiting nurse in this borough to represent the Social Service in making calls upon the sick
and looknig after those who need teporary assistance. She will begin her duties next week. There is much demand

Leading officers of the Secial Service are: Miss Jennie Achelis, President; Mrs. Harris L. Sproat, Vice President;
Miss Martha J. Cornwell, Secretary; Mrs. W. Hollingsworth Whyte, Treasurer.
Commenting upon the situation this morning one of the officers said: The board does not take any credit to itself
for developing the work in West Chester, for this was done wholly by Mrs. Alice Bullock, our nurse, who died a
