Records for the following Book come from the county court order book "A" and circuit court order book "A" and "B".
In the book "the county of Butler in the commonwealth of Kentucky" 1810-1814see the index for the pages the Neels are referred to. These pages are Pg18,A1,A8,A9,A13,A16,C12,D16,17 and 18. Thes mainly deal with survaying and building the local roads. George appears to be a survayer. A Thomas is mentioned as a road worker. This could be Thomas Sr who dies at age 46 or his son who is still a minor and marries in Aug 1814 and his Brother George gives his consent. George signs the marriage bond. Both the book and a copy of the marriage bond belong to me.

It is possible that these families [Thomas Neel, William Taylor and David
Roper] followed or came together from Washington to Marion Counties. I suspect they might have been living very near the corner ofthe four counties [Washington, Clintion, Marion and Jefferson and enumerater may just have put them in Wash. on one census and Marion on another, but it does show they were at least in very close proximity. Convincing evidence that these families are related

Thomas B. Neal [Neel]
The gentleman whose name heads this review is one of the leading farmers in
his community in Marion County, and this volume would be incomplete were
there a failure to make mention of him and the enterprise with whic he is
identified. Tireless energy and honesty of purpose are the chief
characteristics of the man.
Thomas B. Neal, a native of Marion county, Illinois, was born October 31,
1830 the son of Thomas and Rossanna [Walters/Waters] Neal/Neel. The former
came to this county from Kentucky about 1828 and located near Owens Hill
where he spent the remainder of his life, having made a comfortable living
from his farming pursuits, being a hard worker and a man of highest
integrity. The Walters/Waters people were born in Georgia [census of 1850
says his mother was from So. Carolina] and came from that state to this
couny. The father and mother of our subject were married in Kentucky.
Thomas B. Neal our subject, was reared on a farm which he helped develop
from the wild country into which the father had moved, but this was an
industrious family and soon a good and productive farm was developed. His
early schooling was somewhat limited owing to the fact that it was necessary
for him to work on the farm and schools were of the most primitive type in
those days, taught only a few months out of each year. Our subject showed
his loyalty to the "old flag that has never touched the ground" during the
forties when this country was in war with Mexico. Being unable to restrain
his Patriotism when he heard the call for troops to fight the descendants of
the Montezumas, amd he is today one of the few highly honored survivors of
that famous conflict in the country, and it is indeed a privilege to meet
and to show proper courtesy to such heroes. [His brother William Calvin
searved with him in the same unit in the Mexican War] Mr. Neal enlisted in
Co. C, First Illinois Volunteer Regiment, and served with marked distinction
in the same throughout the war. He is now remembered by his government with
a pension of twenty dollars per month as the result of his valor in this
war. The only other living Mexican war veteran in Marion county besides our
subject is William Bundy.
After his experience in the army, Mr. Neal returned home and was married in
1851 to Julia H. Chandler whose people were from Wilson county, Tennessee.
To this union eight children were born , all deceased but four. Mr. Neal
first wife passed away May 2, 1898, and he was married again April 10, 1900,
to Manda S. Cozad. No children have been born to this union.
The names of the subject's children by his first wife follow: Alexander,
deceased; John A., deceased; Etta, Dilla, Rose A., deceased; Cora, Charley
and Ben, deceased. Our subject has six grandchildren and six
great-grandchildren, of whom he is justly proud. Mr. Neal owns a fine farm
of forty acres in Tonti township, which he has developed to a high state and
which has yielded him a comfortable living from year to year and enabled him
to lay up a competency for his old age. This place shows that a man of good
judgement has had its management in hand, and while he is now in the evening
of life he is able to still successiully manage his affairs. He lives in
section 9 of Tonti Township in a substantial farm house which is surrounded
by convenient outbuildings, and his farm is properly stocked with various
kinds of live stock and he delights to see the advancement for his community
and county, and he formerly took an active part in the affairs of the
Democratic party.

Notes for ALICE ALDORA "DORA" NEEL:
MY LIFE, BY DORA SMITH
Written in 1973
I was born in Mountain Grove, Missouri, Wright County to Thomas Neel, August
22, 1885. There were six children, three girls and three boys. Iwas the
third child. All have passed away but one brother an myself. he is six years
younger than me. He lives in Mountain Home, Arkansas. My mother passed awat
in 1906 and my father in 1932. We moved from Missouri in a covered wagon in
1895 and settled on a farm near near Mountain Home, Baxter Co., Arkansas. In
the year of 1894, Dad homesteaded 160 acres near Mountain Grove, Missouri
and built a log house. I got the rest of my schooling in a one room school
house. We had to study hard as we only had three months of school, from the
first of July until cotton picking time in October. Sometime we had only a
short term in the winter, but the weather was so cold we usually didn't make
it to school.
We all had jobs to do on the farm. I was married at Prestona, Missouri by a
Justice of the Peace to Robert James Smith July 13, 1902. My husband was a
farmer and raised cattle. We had five children. Dussie Schermerhorn was born
February 22, 1907. Faye Dewey was born August 21, 1913. Dale Robert was born
April 21. 1916. Dale passed away at three and a half years. Harley Dale was
born July 1, 1920, and was killed in an accident November 29, 1949, leaving
a wife and a little daughter. Robert James Jr. was born May 8, 1924, at
Redlands, California. The other children were born in Arkansas.
I raised a boy Jesse. He passed away three years ago. He was four years old
when he came to live with is in 1904. In 1910, my husband, and the two
children and I came to San Diego, Calif. We spent one year there, then we
went back to Arkansas in 1911. My husband decided we would come back to
California, so in 1916 we came to Hanford, Kings Co., California. That was
during World Wat l. We spent two years there. He then decided to go back and
farm for himself, but the cold weather he did not like, so in 1921 we sold
our fam and started back to California.
We left Mountain Home, Arkansas October 7, 1921. We went by covered wagon to
Parkis, Texas. We sold out teams, as we had two teams of mules. We had one
wagon and a nice covered hack that the children and I traveled in. My
brother, Frank, was traveling with us and helped drive our team.
We sold everything at Parkis, Texas, and took the train. We reached
Redlands, Calif. on February 1, 1922. We rented a house in Redlands for a
short time. On March 18, 1922, we moved to our new home with twenty acres of
apple orchards in Yucaipa. we lived there until Dec. 10, 1947, then came
North. [There was a chicken ranch along with the apple orchard.]
I was raised by Christian parents and was baptized August 14, 1919, in a
creek near Mountain Home, Arkansas by Br. H. McGehee. My daughter Dussie at
14 was baptized by the same man in 1920. Faye was baptized at age 14 in San
Bernardino, Calif. August 8, 1929, by Brother Riggs. Bob Jr. was baptized
August 10, 1939, in San Bernardino, Calif. by Bro. John Brinn. There were
only two families that were members of the Lord's Church when we came to
Yucaipa, [the Ellis and Beasley family- the Vinalls, Smith and a Mrs Ball.]
so we started a church and struggled along for several years. We all chipped
in and bought two lots for $45.00 and in 1940 Brother Lonnie Wolverton moved
there, and with his help, we built a church. My sister-in-law and I went
with him and borrowed enough money to build the church. We had over $1,000
in the bank and borrowed $1,500, and with free help, we built a nice small
church. The church grew until there was a bigger church built on Yucaipa
Boulevard. I also helped to start the church in Redlands, Calif. July 6,
1940. I went with Mason Emde to help start the church. I was there a few
weeks ago, and there was 479 attendance that day. Brother Jeff Walling is
the preacher there now.
We came to Eureka, Calif., in 1947 and lived on a small farm near Alton.
After my son's death, we bought a home on Sixth Street in Fortuna in 1950.
My husband passed away October 10, 1958. He was baptized by Brother Lyle
Bonner in August, 1955.
In 1960, I sold my house and moved to 10th St. in Fortuna. I have my
children Faye and Bob nearme, and I am blessed with twelve grandchildren,
eight great-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
I have had trouble and sorrow, I have bore it all with God's help. I am
getting old and feeble, and my steps are getting slow, but I go to church as
long as I can go.

Notes for CHARLES "CHARLIE" ALVA NEEL:
Have a copy of the hand written book that Walter Neel wrote in the last year
of his life. In the back of the book he talks about Charlie's death. Charlie
went each year to Texas to help with the harvest of the cotton crop on
relatives land. He was in charge of work crews. One of the men on the work
crew was Roy Fisher, He was a neighbor of Charlies in OK when Charlie lived
at Peggs. He was on the work crew picking cotton. He got drunk and came to
work that way and started a big fuss and was very unruley and no one could
handle him. The reason was that he was a very big man in statue and build.
Finally before it got more out of hand Charlie called the law. They came and
took him to sober up in the local jail over night. Charlie went the next day
and got him out and paid his fine. He went back to work and nothing more was
said about it. Later after everyone was back in Ok. Walter's wife was in the
hospital and Walter and Charlie went there to visit her and when they
returned for the day Walter brought him back to Tahlequah and Charlie got a
ride home. He was getting in the car to go home and Roy Fisher approched him
and started an argunment. He was still mad at Charlie for having him put in
jail. Charlie was small in statue and build. Fisher hit Charlie and the
second blow was so hard that he fell and landed on his head and it struck
the curb and his neck was broke and he died immediately. Roy Fisher was
tried and sentenced to four years in prison but only served 21 months. He
then moved to CA. Walter said that later he heard that Roy Fisher had died
in California. Talked to Walter's daughter Pauline and she gave me more
details and she went to the trial of Fisher with her father.

CHARGED IN DEATH OF CHARLIE NEEL
Manslaughter In First Degree is Charge Filed Against Roy Fisher
Roy Fisher, 32-year old farmer from Fort Gibson faced manslaughter charges
this week following the tragic death of a neighbor, Charlie Neel, 53, who
died in a street brawl here Saturday afternoon.
Witnesses of the attack Saturday told Sam Knight, investigating officer,
that Fisher accosted Neel while the older man was standing on a street
corner in the north part of town talking with friends. Fisher struck him
twice, the second blow knocking Neel to the pavement where he struck his
head on the curbing.
According to Dr. Robert McIntosh who made a post mortem examination he died
almost instantly of a broken neck verteba.
Fisher was arrested by Knight and taken to the city jail where he learned
for the first time that Neel had died.
The fight probably arose as the result of an old grudge over the ownership
of a piece of land. However, O. F. Bliss, Jr., county attorney, said that
the motive was vague.
Neel had been a resident of the county for some years. He is survived by his
widow, two daughters, Ola and Nola, of the home, and a son Otis, of Sedan,
Texas.
Funeral services were held in Gideon at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon and
interment was made in the Gideon cemetery. Both Neel and Fisher live in the
Gideon community. Funeral arrangements were made by the Reed-Culver Funeral
home.

when he was hit by Roy Fisher, 32, a farmer of the same neighborhood, and

fractured his neck, according to County Attorney C. F. Bliss.
Fisher was charged wit first degree manslaughter in Justice of the Peace
Court Monday.
Funeral services for Neel were held at Gideon Wednesday afternoon.

TAHLEQUAH FARMER IS SLAIN SATRUDAY
Charlie Neel Struck to Ground; Roy Fisher Is Held
Special to the Phoenix
TAHLEQUAH, Oct. 1---Charlie Neel, 53-year-old farmer who lived near Gideon,
12 miles north of here, was struck down and killed instantly as he stood on
a street corner here today talking to friends.
Witnesses told Sam Knight, city policeman, who investigated the case, that
Roy Fisher, 32 also a farmer near Gideon, walked up to the elder man and
struck him. The second blow knocked Neel to the pavement. His head struck
the curbing.
Dr. Robert McIntosh said that he died probably instantly, of a broken neck
vertebra.
Fisher was arrested by Knight abd taken to the city jail. He did not know
that Neel had died until he was told at the jail.
County Attorney June Bliss said that no charges would be filed against
Fisher before Monday.
An old grudge over ownership of a piece of land was advanced by authorities
as a possible motive. Bliss said, however, that motive appeared to be vague
and uncertain.
Both men had come to Tahlequah with the Saturday crowds. Fisher was alone,
but part of Neel's family had come with him, to visit relatives here. None
of the family was with him at the time of the tragedy, however.
Neel is survived by his widow and three children, two daughters, Ola and
Lola, of the home, and a son, Otis, of Sedan, Texas. The body was taken to
Reed-Culver funeral home pending arrangements.

At Christmas time my mother would send a basket of fruit to my grandparents
who live in Oklahoma. She knew that they would enjoy the fruit from sunny
California where we lived. One year an avacodo was also in the basket. My
grandmother did not know what they were or how expensive they were. She
wrote back that she really did enjoy all the fruit but did not know what to
do with the green gourd so she threw it to the hogs.

giving his customers their money's worth when he cut their hair. he related
stories of early Oklahoma history to all who were interested remembering
dates and names in great detail.

[There is a picture included of Mack Houston in the article]

Caption under a picture that went with the article.
Veteran hair-cutter- Mack Houston, who has been a barber in Tahlequah for 50
year, still sharpens a straight razor on a strap while he visits with
customers.
In mirror can be seen the name of his business on the front wendow -
Cherokee Barber shop. [article was done about 1971]
COMMON SENSE HAIRCUTS
TAHLEQUAH - More than 52 years ago Mack Houston learned to cut hair "on a
block behind the smokehouse" and later moved to town and took up the trade
to put his children through school.
" I gave them an education with comb and sissors," remembers the man who
went to work in a barber shop 52 years ago and later started his own
business --- where he still cuts hair almost 50 years later.
Houston, 83, is still giving what he calls "common sense" haircuts in his
Cherokee Barber Shop here and doesn't have any plans about retirement.
Reared at Blue Springs, now the community of Gideon, Houston, part Cherokee
Indian, quit farming and went to work in a Hulbert shop in 1918 and soon
after opened his shop in Tahlequah.
"At that time it was hard to get children in to school," he reflects. "When
my boy reached school age I would have had to carry him to school on a
horse. So I moved to town."
And Houston gave his two children the education he planned on, His dauthter
graduated at Northeastern State College here and is now a teacher and his
son, Leonard, also attended college and is in the sales business here.
"When I first went to work I cut hair for 20 cents," he says "Then it
graduated up to 25 cents. I've made more money cutting hair for 25 cents
than I make now at $1.75 --- there were more customers."
An Oklahoma City resident, a former customer at Houston's shop, one brought
in his small son for his first haircut --- and to sit on the same board he
had sat on for his first trim.
Houston also has the same razor strap he started out with -- "but it's about
worn out."
And he's heard plenty of jokes and philosophy, he says --- "from politics on
up. Barber shop news, I call it."
[Uncle Mack was one of the sweetest men who ever walked this earth. He loved
the Lord and someday I will be with him in glory]

Jerry Watson & Roy King Held Without Bond
SUSPECTS SEIZED IN CITY MURDER
A massive man hunt ended in Seagraves a few hours after Scott Williams was
found shot to death at Higginbotham-Bartlett Lumber Company when he suprised
burglars at the store.
Arrested and being held without bond in Jerry Watson, 29, and 21 year old
Roy King, both of Seagraves. Watson was taken into custody at about 11:00
a.m. Friday, and King was arrested about an hour and a helf later by Sheriff
Ed Welch and other lawman.
Williams and Clayton Harper went to the local business at about 7;45 p.m.
Thursday night and discovering that a robbery was in progress, Williams
dispatched Harper for help and entered the building apparently toapprehend
the burglars. Williams was found face down with three shots in his body. Dr.
Bill McCollough told the News editor that Williams also had been beaten in
the back of the head. The shots came from a 22 cal. revolver and entered
Williams right chest.
The murder weapon was found Friday at about 2:00 p.m. west of the lumber
yard in grass. Bloody gloves were found across the street near the stop sign
on the corner by Hearne's Warehouse. King took officers to the area where
the gun and gloves were found.
A new light developed in the case late Friday when Watson complained of a
wound and a sore chest and back. Dr. McCollough went to Seminole and
examined Watson in the jail and found that he had a bullet wound in his
body. Watson was taken to the Seagraves Hospital in custody and Dr.
McCollough removed a 22 cal. bullet which had hit his ribs and entered the
fleshy part of his back. The bullet evidently struck Watson when he was
allegedly breaking a glass in the back door with the pistol and it
discharged. Watson was returned to the county jail anfter the bullet was
removed.
An important lead had developed in the early hours and Sheriff Welch checked
a local ammunition dealer and found that Watson bought a box of 22 long
rifle shells Thursday afternoon.
The arrests were made and the alleged statements of the weo men were given,
saying that Watson did the hooting and struck Williams. King stated that he
fled the scene when Williams sent harper for help and was not on the premise
at the time of the murder.
Bloody clothing was found hidden in the trailerhouse where King resided.
King showed officers where the clothes were hidden.
According to King's statement he fled and went to the mobile home which is
about four block from the scene of the crime. Watson also is alleged to have
fled and arrived at he trailer after discarding the weapon and the gloves.
Sheriff Welch headed an investigation which included help from his deputies,
local police, Texas T=Rangers, and county officers from Yoakum, Terry and
Dawson counties.
Lubbock police arrived after midnight with dogs to attempt to track the
alleged fugitives.
A few tool were stacked near a back exit with the change bag from the store.
Some one dollar bills were found on the floor a few feet from where Williams
was found face down in a pool of blood. The money was on the floor only
several feet from a blood splattered floor by the counter where Williams was
evidently shot the first time. William's car keys were in his left hand when
he was found by police only minutes after the shooting . Williams had eaten
supper with his wife at their home before returning to the office. Ut was
reported that he had talked to his daughter who lives in Oklahoma City when
she called him on the phone just before he went to the lumber yard. The time
of death was set at about 7:50 p.m. Harper alerted police that the robbery
was in grogress and returned to the store as the police arrived.

7OTH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Jewell and Elton Van Osdol of Riverside celerated their 60th anniversary
with family and friends at a dinner party at the home of their daughter
Junelle Budzinski of Lake Forest.
Mr. and Mrs. Van Osdol were marrid in La Crosse, Kan., on July 12, 1930. Mr.
Van Osdol retired in 1975 after 25 years as a stationary engineer with the
Union Pacific Railroad. [Stationary Engineer was his last position on the
railroad and he did not hold that position for 25 years.] Mrs. Van Osdol is
a home maker. Both hare members of Riverside Free Methodist Church.
Their other children are Willora Glee Krapf of Pennsylvania and the late
Doon McCarthy. [Donna was not their daughter but their grand daughter and
she spent a great deal of her life living with her grandparents.] They have
five grandchildren. [They really just have three grandchildren. Two of those
children are Donna's children. Donna was adoped by Willora Glee and June was
an adoped child of Jewell and Elton. Both children were Korean Orphans.]
He was good at machenics like his father. We always had a used car and he
kept it running until it could not be fixed any more. When it got tired
looking he bought another used car [always a Chevrolet] and drove it to
chuch and to the store and kept the older car to drive to work. It was not
until he retired that my parents finally bought a brand new car. One year
before he started working on the railroad we drove to Kansas and OK in
December over the Christmas holidays. It was my first and only Christmas on
the farm. My Mother's parents did not have electrictey and my father chopped
a tree in the woods and it was trimed with paper chains and popcorn and very
little else. She had no Christmas decorations in any way. They never
bothered with a tree at Christmas time. I remember getting a Betsy Wetsy
Doll that Chrismas of 1948. My father was always jerryrigging things. He
really tried to invent things but some how they did not come out the way he
intended them to. Once it was very hot and we were complaining of the heat.
He took a old metal barrell and cut the bottom out of it and mounted a fan
inside of it and put a hose to it and put it on a platform so it would fit
up to the bathroom window. The bathroom window was directly over the toilet.
When he turned the fan on it sprayed a water mist through the window. This
was his version of a water cooler. We lived in the semiarid out skirts of
LA. It did a pretty good of cooling BUT when you tried to go to the toilet
you got a shower. No one wanted a shower while they were on the toilet so he
had to take it down. The cool air was supposed to cool off the bathroom hall
and the living room but the cool air did not reach that far. If he turned
the fan up to a highter speed then you really got the water. It could not be
controlled form inside of the house. One year he decided to make my mother a
Christmas gift. There was nothing wrong with his idea but he just could not
quite carry it off. He wrapped them all in one large box and she was going
nuts trying to guess what was in the box. He enjoyed her fussing about what
it could possibley be. When she opened it it was several picture frames that
he had made. He got some bamboo from someplace and cut them for the sides.
He got plexiglass and cut them to different sizes, like 8X10 and 5X7. There
was a plexiglass on both sides of the picture so it was doublesided and then
there was the bottom with was another two pieces of plexiglass. It was
shaped like this side view. _ll_ The bamboo held the sides of the upright
covers over the pictures. The bottoms slanted slightly up towards the
picture. You could slide the picture between the two verticle pieces of
plexiglass. This sounds good but there was not a straight cut piece of
plexiglass in any of the picture frames and so this made them look tacky. I
think that every piece of plexiglass was crooked in some way. She did not
want to use them because of the sloppy job he did cutting the plexiglass but
she finally used them. I do not remember how long she used them but they
finally dissapeared. One year he bought from someone several potholders that
were in the shape of ladies under pants. These were crocheted. She was mad
all Christmas day. She did not like gifts for the kitchen. He finally
learned that he was better off to buy her a plant of somekind. That always
made her happy for she loved to garden both with flowers and vegetables. In
LA you can grow almost anything and she had outside and inside plants
everywhere. When they moved to Rose Garden Village. They had a small 1
bedroom apt and a small front yard with grass. She got my father to did up
the grass and they planted a beautiful flower garden. Some of it was in pots
and some directely in the ground. They made the local paper with a picture
of the garden and them standing in the middle of what they had created.
Under the picture it read: In a year's time at Rose Garden Village in
Riverside, Elton and Jewell Van Osdol have filled their apartment's front
yard with roses, sweet allysum, pansies, petunias, hollyhock and much more.
Title of article A HAPPY RETIREMENT THATS GONE TO SEED. BY Weezy Wold Home
and Garden Writer. Retirement may mean anything from round-the- clock soap
opera viewing to round-the-world cruises. For a couple at Rose Garden
Village, a retirement community on Adams Street in Riverside, it means a
time to do things together --- such as developing a barren front yard into a
thing of beauty to be enjoyed by themselves and their neighbors. Jewell and
Elton Van Osdol moved just a year ago to one of the older apartments at Rose
Garden Village, which meant taller shade trees and older existing shrubs. It
also meant, in their case, a very bare front yard except for a few
shrubs --- some low cypress --- and some weeds that were suffering from lack
of attention. The couple went into action. Thank goodness tenants are
welcome to cultivate the land a Rose Garden. Soil amendments, worked into
the hard ground, helped to make it more fertile and allow irrigation water
and oxygen to reach plant roots. An existing sprinkler system was capped off
because the couple preferred to do their own watering. Because the ground
sloped away from the apartment, the couple knew they could expect runoff
water and top soil on the front sidewalk. This was avoided by installing two
concrete block walls , one across the middle of yard and another flanking
the sidewalk. It also allowed them to raise the soil level. By placing the
blocks with the open sides up, the opening became flower pots for sedums and
small, flowering border plants. "We put in sack and sacks of steermanure and
potting soil," Jewell said "I did the planting but [Elton] did the spading.
We both placed the concreteblock edgings." Two trees in the front yard had
been cut down, leaving long stumps almost 5 feet tall. A pole nailed to the
trees became a crossbar and a perfect support for hanging plants --- baskets
of colorful geraniums in bloom. "I never had a garden before . We came from
Oklahoma and we had large yards with lots of lawn and shrubs and just a few
flowers as borders. I always lomged in my heart o have a little spot where I
could plant bright-colored flowers." Jewell said, her excitement reflected
in her words. Before they moved to Riverside, the Van Osdols lived in Green
River Village and before that in Santa Fe Springs. Elton retired 10 ago from
Union Pacific Railroad.
"I'm not ready for the rocking chair and dont's count pills, but I work in
the garden several hours a day, " Jewell said. She does most of the
gardening but her husband helps with the watering, now that the heavy work
is done. He doesn't know one plant from the other. I could plant weeds and
wouldn't know the difference. But he really enjoys the garden." They sit at
the patio and both enjoy the color and the visitors. "People come by, even
some in wheelchairs who take the long way around to come by and see our
garden," Jewell said. There is no lawn and no shortage of color in the yard.
Among the perennial plants are eight rosebushes, some in bloom. Jewell's
favorite is Bonanza. Annual and perennial flowers are scattered. White and
purple sweet allysum, pansies, Johnny-Jumps-ups, mums and many striking
single and double petunias in the ground and in pots add to the screne.
Background plants include ready-to-bloom hollyhocks. "I made some mistakes
and learned a lot planting the flowers and bulbs. The iris and gladiolus and
hollyhocks are too close together. But I learn by doing. The happiest part
of our day is the watering and sitting on the patio seeing the color."
Buckets at the edge of the patio hold water and fertilizer at the ready.
Several large half-barrels are within the garden. One holds a tomato plant,
the other a squash, Elton said. "That's not a squash," Jewell contradicted
"it's a cucumber. I could feed him alfalfa and he wouldn't complain, she
said.

AFTER 102 YEARS, CHEROKEE MAN FINALLY GETS MARKER
By Bob Gibbins, Press Staff Writer
It took more than 100 year, but a grave marker will be placed at the burial
site of a Cherokee Indian who fought in the Civil War after coming to indian
Territory on the Trail of Tears.
Leonard Houston, a great grandson of Klas Tama Houston, said the marker for
Klas Yama's grave beca,e a reality after he answered some questions for a
local Veterans Affairs offical.
Houston said his great-grandfather was born in 1833 in Cherokee Nation,
Georgia and moved west with his family five years later on the Trail of
Tears.
Klas Tama later fought in the Civil War. He died in 1889 and was buried in a
private cemetery north of Tahlequah.
Houston saie his father, Klas Tama's grandson, is also buried in what some
refer to as the Houston Cemetery.
He said his great-grandfather's grave has gone unmarked for all those years.
Houston said one of his neighbors suggested talking to the VA about the
possibility of getting a marker.
He went downtown to the office, and answered some questons and the marker
wassent to his home. "it's kind of an oddity to have a marker," Houston said
"He's been dead 102 years." He also said he has a copy of klas Tama's Civil
War discharge, which shows he served for four years.
Houston said he is now considering taking some of the items to an Indian
Museum.
He said he hasencased the marker in concrete and put four sacks of cement in
the form. He has also reinforced the marker with wire.
Houston hopes to take the marker to the grave soon.
There is a picture of Leonard Houston standing by the marker and the caption
says; After 102 years, Leonard Houston's great-grandfather's grave will get
a proper marker. Klas-Tama Houston, who died in 1889, served in the Union
Army during the Civil War. Leonard Houston worked with the Veterans's
Administration to obtain the marker, to be placed on the grave in the old
Blue Springs Cemetery, north of Tahlequah on State Highway 82.

Harold Neel Dies At Home in Locust Grove
Harold Neel, 35, Locust Grove, died at his home Thursday night after a long
illness.
Born April 25, 1928, at Peggs, Neel lived most of his life at Locust Grove.
he was an armed forces veteran and a deacon in the Little Rock Bapist church
at Locust Grove.
Survivors are his wife, Deloris of the home; a son, Michael of the home; his
father, Walter Neel, Peggs, and a sister, Mrs Pauline Johnson. Tahlequal.
[he died of cancer]
This was sent to me by Bonnie Neel Beasley. Do not know what paper it was in
but probably Locust Grove paper.
Poem by Dona Johnson Lusk
[Hearld Dean Neel's neice, the daughter of his sister Pauline]
I often think of Harold Dean
And all the things he never got to do-
He never got to play blue grass on his guitar.
He never got to write the songs he loved to sing.
He never got to travel around just sharing
his love with folks like you and me.
He never got to go to the international Rodeo-
So many things he never got to do.
But then I think of all the tings he got to do
He smiled a smile that warmed thru and thru
He could laugh and joke or he could let a tear
trocl;e dpwm out of an eye of blue.
He never let on if he knew when people got
upset with him
Because he was so busy just living the
only way he knew.
And now I can even think of all the things
he can do that no one else can do-
Because you see-- God reached down
his hand and said,
"Harold Dean, I have need of you."
And God gave us all time to say
"Goodbye Harold Dean -- we love you!"
Now he's up there walking in tall grass
in skies so blue.
There's no pain or fear -- Just time to do
all those things that down here he
never got to do.
I know if he could lean down to earth now
he'd say something likethis--
"You all just goright on living like I was right
there with you--
Don't miss a single thing on God's great earth
because the time is drawing near
When God's voice you'll hear
Saying "Child, my child - I have someone
up here I know you'll want to see
and he's longing for a loved one dear.
So my child prepare for I soon will have need
of you."

He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved Mark 16:16
[This was when I was baptized and was dunked under the water in a borrowed
baptisery at a church in Los Angeles, California. I was not the only one
baptised at that time.]
I loved to sing and took a few singing lessons in the 1950s from Florence
Ahn Takeuchi. She lived across the street from us when we lived at 5317
Cimmron, L.A., California. She sang professionally in night clubs and in
light opera and musicals. She spent a year in Florida singing one of the
main roles in "Flower Drum Song". We kept her daughter Jenniver for the time
that she was gone. I sang solos in Church and later was in many church
choirs. The church that I grew up in did not have a choir. After I married
Calvin I sang in the choir on base at Ft Grealy, Alaska. While I was there
we entered a contest among the different chapel choirs on military bases in
Alaska. We made a tape of a song that we sang and we won first place in the
contest. I also sang at the 2nd Hollywood Presbyterian Church where I was
attending when I met Calvin. I sang in girl choruses in High school and Jr.
High. I sang in the choir at Tamaqua, Pa., 1st Methodist Church for several
years. I sang a solo at my parents 25th wedding anniversary in 1955.
Florence Takeuchi held the party at her house. her husband, Joe Takeuchi was
a chef and made the meal that was searved. I sang two songs. "My Mothers
Wedding Day" from Brigadoon and "Because" a love song made famous by Tony
Bennett. I still have the music from that time. I sang in the Schuylkill
County Chorus for one year. I have programs from the Christmas or Winter
program that we preformed at Trinity Episcopal Church in Pottsville, PA. on
Dec. 8, 1984 and the Spring Concert at the same location on May 5th 1985. We
sang some very difficult music. I cannot read music and sing saprano.
Usually I sing the melody because of not being able to read music. The
chorus was led by Catherine S. Zimmerman who taught music at Tamaqua Junior
High School.
For 2 1/2 years, from the fall of 1961 till the early spring of 1964, I sang
in the Braille Institute Choir. We sang in many interesting places from
nursing homes to the L.A. County Jail. We also went to hospitals to do
caroling around Christmas time. I also did some solo work with the choir. It
was a wonderful time in my life and I met and became friends with many
wonderful people. Our directer was the directer of the Breau of Music for
Los Angeles, Mr. Howard Bergan. We traveled all over the L.A. area doing
concerts to publish what Braille Institute is doing for the Blind. I
appeared in two different plays with other Blind Actors. One was a Christmas
play and played a child in it. The other was a mella drama and I played a
southern young lady. I have forgotton the names of both of the plays but
have pictures of myself in them. I learned to knit and weave at the
Institute and modeled some of my weaving in a fashion show that they had. I
made material for a suit and wore it in the show and a apron. I also learned
to braid rugs and have made several at the institute and on my own at home.
Made wool and cotton braided round and oval rugs. I own three looms and have
made many, may different things. Here is a list of some the things that I
have wove over the years. Rag Rugs, stoles, placemats, all sorts of table
runners and scarfs, curtin material, shag throw rugs, wall hangings, purses,
mug rugs, afgans, towells and ect. I have won two blue ribbons at fairs for
my work. I wove an afgan and won at a fair in Santa Fe Springs in May of
1972. Calvin was in Viet Nam and I and my children were staying with my
parents at the time. I also won at the Teller Co. fair in Colorado in Aug.
1981. This time I won for a stole that I had made. What thrilled me is that
I was competing against sighted people and I beat them, that sure made me
feel good. I have tried to sell my weaving but people do not understand the
work that goes into makeing hand woven goods. They think that the prices are
two high. Hand weaving is an very old art and is not appreacited in this
throw away world.

Places where we lived that I remember. These were all in Los Angeles,
California
1. Paramlie Ave. This was a one bedroom duplex. It had a yard and is the
first place that I remember. I was about four years old when we lived there.
It was arented house.
2. Duplex that they bought. We lived on one side and my father's sister
Dorothy and her three children lived on the other side. This place is very
fuzzy in my mind.
3. House that my parents bought on 119th Street. It was a 2 bedroom house on
a large lot. Had a garage and a long driveway that I liked to roller scate
on. It had a picket fence around the edge of the property. I got a cat while
living there who name was Boots. It was black with white paws.
4. Daddy lost his job and he was out of work for six months. We moved to a
small trailer that sat by the chuch. We slept in the trailer and ate in the
church's kitchen. The Church was located on the corner of 30th and Hill St.
It was the 2nd Free Methodist Church. It was very close to downtown LA.
Across from the church was John Adams Jr. High. He got a job with Union
Pacific Railroad with the help of Art House. Mr. House went to our chuch and
worker for the railroad. We then moved to an apartment in a 4 unit building
on Olive Street.
2820 So. Olive St. This place was a one bedroom apt. It had a small front
and back yard. We lived on the left side of the building on the ground
floor. There was a living room, dining room, kitchen and a bedroom. In the
dining room and the living were pullout beds that were built in under a
china closet in the dining room and under a built in desk and display
cabnits in the living room. I slep in the dining room. There was also a back
porch where my mother whashed the clothes on a wringer washer. We had a bath
room and next to it was a large closet and a dressing room with a built in
dressing table. There was a small cubby hole that was under the stairs that
went up to the the apt above and I kept all my stuff that I played with in
that small closet. I was always rearrangeing it because it was hard to find
things in it and was always a mess. I remember once there was a small earth
quake and I was in the bed that rolled under the china cabnit. That old bed
rolled back and forth like crazy and I wondered if It was going to roll
unter the china cabnit with me in it. The plates in the cabnit sure did
rattle and dance and I think that a few got broken too. We lived there while
I was in the 5th, 6th and 7th grade. Still have many memories associated
with that house. My mothers brother Robert would come to stay with us. He
arrived unannounced and would stay until he found other living arrangements.
He did this more than one time. He liked older women who had some money and
would keep him. He was kind of wild and loved to drink and chase the women.
It was while living with us that he first saw a lady named Flora Morphew.
She lived down the street from us in a apartment building with her husband
Dale and small daughter Joyce. My mother had met her while doing house
calling in the neighborhood fro the church. They became fast friends and
Flora spent a lot of time at our house. Robert had seen her on the bus and
he came home and said that he had seen this beautiful lady on the bus and
sure would like to be able to meet her. He just got the words out of his
mouth and in walked Flora who was the the person that he had seen on the
bus. He tried to romance her but she was married and did not want to get
involved even though she was attracted to him. Years later Robert call our
house and wanted her address and phone number. Flora was now divorced and
Robert was free too. I refused to give him the information. Flora had enough
problems without Robert messing up her life. My mother who was out of the
house when her brother called suddenly came home and then she got on the
phone whit Robert and she finally gave in and gave him her address and phone
number. That was a big mistake. They got together and later were married. It
was not a happy marriage. Flora was warned about what she was getting into
but she did not listen. They finally divorced. But remained friends until
his death. She went to see him and after she left Robert had a stroke and
died shortly after wards in the hospital. He was only
59 years old. He was living with another women when he died and she was very
jealous of Flora and when she left her and Robert had a big fight and that
is was probably brought on the stroke. When we lived on Olive my mother was
Penny a Day chairman at church. People who had a birthday would give a penny
for every year that they had lived. This would happen during Sunday School.
My mother kept the money in a jar in the built in cabnit in the living room.
One day that money disappeared. She suspected that Robert had taken it and
she later found out that she was right and he never repaid it. It was money
that went to missionaries for their support. There was not much money in the
jar but to steal from the church and the Lord is pretty low. Robert did not
care. My mother had to make up the money. There was not much money in the
jar about 3 or 4 dollars but in the early 50s that went further than it does
today.
In 1952 we moved to 1317 Cimmaron. The Church on 30th and Hill sold their
building to a business that tore down the church and built a new building on
that property. They then bought a church on the corner of 54th and Cimmaron.
We rented an apartment accross the street on the second floor above a
business. We lived there till after I graducated from High School. My father
was the church janitor. We never lived very far from the church. He also was
the maintaince man at the church. The place on olive was about 2 short
blocks from the church. This apt had two bedrooms. There was no hall in the
apt so all the rooms ran in a row one next to the other. It used to be
doctor offices. Daddy became the apt manager and rented out the other
appartments. There were four apts, ours was the fifth and the largest. The
other four were only one room with a large closet, bath and a small kitchen.
When my parents adopted June I moved into one of them that was next to ours
and it became my bedroom. I got blind aid when I was 16 and so could afford
my own little place. This freed up my room for June. I still ate at my
parents place. The little apartment rent was $40.00 a month. I had to live
on my own to qualifiy for the blind aid. I was not happy moving out of the
main living space and felt pushed out so June could have my room. I liked
having my own space and bath to myself but still did not like it.

Notes for SFC *CALVIN ANDREW KRAPF, JR.:
On Sunday December 7, 1997 Calvin fell 2 stories off a narrow cat walk on
the outside of his house, in Tamaqua, while repairing burnt out Christmas
light bulbs. This catwalk was buuild by Calvin a few years earlier when he
extended the walls of the kitchen out to the edge of the porch. He placed
plywood down and did not put up a railing. In time the plywood rotted and
gave way from under one of the legs of the step stood that he was standing
on while he was changing the burnt out light bulbs. Allen, his son, saw him
fall and called for Glee and ran out to check on Calvin. Glee called 911.
Mean while Calvin's heart had
stopped beating and he had stopped breathing. When the ambulance arrived
they worked on him for about ten minutes and finally got his heart started
and him breathing again. Then they rushed him to Miners Memorial Hospital.
There they could not do anything for him except hook him up to a resporator
and fly him to the Lehigh Valley Hospital in a hellicopter. There they tried
to stablize him so they could run some tests on him. On Monday December 8th
a catscan was preformed. The test showed that Calvin had crushed cinus
bones. An endocardiogram was also performed lator in the day which showed
there was very little brain activity. At 11:00 A.M. , Tuesday December 9,
1998 Stacey called the hospital to find out how Calvin was doing and was
told that a test was done to see how much blood was flowing to his brain.
This test showed that Calvin had no blood flow to his brain and he was brain
dead. He was being kept alive till his family called or showed up at the
hospital. On Saturday December 13, 1998 Calvin's funeral was held
atGriffiths Funeral Home Tamaqua Pa. He was buried at Odd Fellows Cematery
in Frackville. He was creamated and the ashes were buried next to his
parents and grant parents on his mothers side. Also down the same row is
buried his great grand parents also on his mothers father side. He had a
free brass head stone from the United States governmemt for is service in
Viet Nam and his over 20 years of service. It took nearly seven months to
get the headstone because the first on was inncorrect and had to be returned
to be done over. His wife Glee will be creamated and interred beside him.
