Edward Lee's Will

In the name of God amen the 1st day of June in the year of our Lord 1775.   I Edward Lee in the county of Johnston former being very sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God therefore calling unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and testament that is to say prinicipally and first of all I give and recommend my soul in to the hands of God that gave it and for my body recommend to the earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my executors nothing doubting but at the general Resurection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate where with it hath pleases God to bless me in this life I give devise and dispos of the same in the following manner and form

Item.  It is my will and I do order that in the first place all my just debts and funeral charges be paid and satisfyed.

Item.  I lend to Mary Lee my well beloved wife during her life or widowhood a negro fellow named Ceasar and a wench named Patience and the plantation where on I now live and as many of the cattle belonging to the plantation as she chooses to keep as far as thirty-five head and two horses and two mares and all the sheep and hogs except such as are fit for market and as many of them as will serve the family for the season and all my household goods except two beds.   I also lend her a negro wench named Venice till by son Jeremiah Lee come to the age of twenty one years then to be delivered to him.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my well beloved son William Lee a plantation containing 300 acres of land it being the plantation whereon Lewis Bryan now lives and a negro fellow named Peter and ten pounds in money.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my well beloved son Lemuel Lee a plantation containing 100 acres more or less know by the name of Greens plantation and the lower part of a tract of land on Mill Creek to begin at the lower corner and run up the Creek to a brach just below the school house then the course of the branch to the road then along the old road to the back line and a negro boy named Abel and a sorril horse named Ball.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my well beloved son John Lee the plantation whereon my son William Lee now lives and a negro boy named Pompey and a horse named Bonas and a mare and coalt and ten head of breeding cattle and one bed and furniture.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my well beloved son Stephan Lee one plantation containing 250 acres more or less it being the place where William Taylor now lives and a negro boy named York and a mare named Snip and her two coalts and five cows and calves thirty pounds in money and one bed and furniture.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my well beloved son Jeremiah Lee a plantation containing 100 acres more or less known by the name of the Pasture Brake and the upper part of that tract of land on Mill Creek at the bridge to the dividing before mentioned and the negro wench before mentioned named Venice with her increase from the date of these presents and thirty pounds in money.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my well beloved son Edward Lee the plantation whereon I now live it being two tracts of land containing 300 acres in all and the negro wench named Patience after the decease or widowhood of my wife with her increase from the date of these presents and my still.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my well beloved daughter Anne Lee a negro garl named Hagar and the cattle that Colonel Williams gave her.

Item.  I give and bequeath to my well beloved daughter Tabitha Lee a negro garl named Dinah.

Item.  I will that after the deceas or widowhood of my wife all the reminder of my estate be equally divided amongst my children at the discretion of my executors.

Lastly I make and ordain my well beloved son Lemuel Lee and my brother John Lee my only and sole executors of this my last will and testament and I do hereby disalow and revoke and disanul all and every other as former wills testaments legacies and executors by me in any ways before this time named willed and bequeathed ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament in witness whereof I have here unto let my hand and seal the day and year above written.
