To all people whom these presents may come, I Jonathan Wood of the State of North Carolina and County of Johnston, send greeting.  Know ye I the said Jonathan Wood, for and in consideration of the natural love and affection, which I have and bear unto my beloved son Whitfield Wood, of the said State and County and for divers other good causes and consideration xxx hereunto xxxxx have given and granted, and by those presents do give and grant unto my beloved son, Whitfield Wood a certain tract or parcel of land situated lying and being on both sides of Mill Creek in the County and State aforesaid.  Beginning at a pine Allen Johnsons, Miles Barefoot corner runs thence 116 poles to a stake, thence East 162 poles to a stake in David Peacocks line, thence South 116 poles to a stake in Allen Johnsons line thence West 162 poles to the beginning, containing one hundred acres of land, to have and to hold and enjoy the above named land unto the sd. Whitfield Wood, his xxxx xxxxx, and assigns to the only proper use and behoof of him the said Whitfield Wood his heir, and heirs and assigns forever, and I the said Jonathan Wood, all and singular the aforesaid tract or parcel of land to the sd. Whitfield Wood, his heirs xxx heirs and assigns against all persons whatsoever shall and will warrant and forever defend the sd. track of parcel of land by those present in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed by seal this twenty eight day of July, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty eight.

On this the 21st day of September in the year 1869, before personally come Joel Lee, to me known who being by me duly sworn, says that Jonathan Wood, the grantor to the annexed deed is dead, that he knew Jonathan Wood, the person described therein as grantor that he had frequently seen him write knew his hand writing and that the name of the said grantor subscribed to the said conveyance was in the proper hand writing of the said Jonathan Wood.  Sworn as subscribed before me.

Whitfield Wood, the grantee in the annexed deed of conveyance, being duly sworn says upon his oath that John Shepherd the subscribing witness to the annexed deed is dead, that he has made due diligence to prove the handwriting of the said John Shepherd, but finds that it is impossible to make such proof.
