Notes for MARYANNE SMYTHE:

"She loved to ride the street car all over. Had a pass that she wore down on both sides.  She was so nimble that when they were building the Apt. above the garage on Upas St. she climbed up the rope that was strung to get up before the stairs were built.  She ran a boarding house to make ends meet. She was also on county assistance.  Grandpa, Alexander N. Jones went to Guatemala on an engineering project and got amoebic dysentery. The family went down and got him and brought him home. My dad remembers him being carried in by the women of the family and put on the couch. He was very frail and thin."

Within the next two years other settlers, including A. E. Adams, A. N. Jones, D. L. Shepley, and F. M. and L. T. Lester, moved into the county with their families."

Jones Reunion

Five persons whose aggre-gate ages total 364 years and who had not met in 56 years, recently had a reunion in San Diego. This is how it happened:

W.B. Jones of Paso Robles, 74 years of age, drove over to ? Earlimart last week and met his brother, J.W. Jones 70. and his sister Mrs.I.H. Jones. 77 years young of Sanger, and another sister, Mrs. Miller, 64 of Stock-ton. The party then went by automobile to San Diego to meet the eldest brother, 79, who had just returned from Central America. The group met for the first time since 1869, and there hasn't been a death among the children since 1858.

Marriage: 12 Sep 1872, Parker County, Texas

Children of MARYANNE SMYTHE and ALEXANDER JONES are:

Notes for PORTER VIRGIL JONES:

"HALE CENTER, TX." The Handbook of Texas Online. <http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/view/HH/hjh1.html> [Accessed Mon Nov 18 19:29:55 US/Central 2002 ].

HALE CENTER, TEXAS. Hale Center is at the intersection of Interstate Highway 27 and Farm Road 1914, in central Hale County. It originated in 1893 with the merger of two rival communities, Hale City and Epworth, both founded in 1891. Residents moved buildings to the new site. The new post office was named for the fact that the community is at the center of the county. When railroad prospects failed and a long drought retarded development, the town faltered. Some residents moved their homes to their ranches, so that by 1898 only two businesses and one residence remained. The town revived in 1909 with the coming of the Santa Fe Railroad. The Great Depressionqv years saw the town's population of 1,007 in 1930 fall to 836 by 1940. By 1950 the population was 1,626, and in 1960 it was 2,196. On June 2, 1965, a tornado destroyed the downtown area, including twenty-nine businesses, the city hall, and the fire station. Casualties included five dead and sixty injured, with $8 million in property damage. The population was 1,964 in 1970, when the town had forty-three businesses, mostly agricultural. Hale Center had 2,297 residents in 1980. Events include an All-American country fiddlers' contest, which is a part of a larger celebration known as the July 4th Homecoming. In 1990 the population was 2,067.
