Notes for MARY ELLEN BLANTON:

"...there is an article about your family.

THE HISTORY OF NORTH AND WEST TEXAS

The article is about John B BLANTON, and it states that his father was Dr Jacob BLANTON. Jacob moved into KY when it was new and before the rebellion settled in Arkansas.  For his wife he chose Sarah DONNELL who bore him three children, namely;
Mary, the wife of John D SMYTH, of Parker County TX; James W, who died at Chico, and the subject of the sketch who was John B BLANTON.
It says of Jacob that he was a VA man and a cumberland Presbyterian minister, taking up active church work when he abandoned medicine and closing his live in Clay Co TX in the ministry in 1879. He was born in 1808, studed medicine thoroughly, and graduated from two colleges. I don't have this whole article so it would be worth your while to hunt it down. John B BLANTON was a MD and practised medicine in Wise CO TX. for thirty years.
Hope this helps you.

Notes for TOLITHA ANN SMYTH:

Taken from:

"The Hutchison Chronicles" compiled by Phillis Winthurst*

"...Martin (Burton Hutchison) had been out of the service about eight months when he married. His marriage to Tolitha Ann Smyth, the youngest daughter of Hugh and Nancy Smyth, is recorded in family records as occurring on 24 July 1865. Tolitha was around twenty-five years of age, and Martin was twenty- two. The Smyths were former Tennesseans, having moved to present-day Ballard County from Weakley County in the early 1830s. During their first seven years in Kentucky, Tolitha's father purchased eight quarter-section tracts of land from the state, a total of 1,440 acres or over two square miles of land. (See map on following page.)

The Smyths' allegiance during the Civil War was with the Confederacy. Tolitha's youngest brother, Hugh Donnell, served with the Kentucky 3rd Mounted Infantry (C), joining in the spring of 1864 and appears to have died shortly after the end of the conflict, leaving a wife and two small sons to survive him. Tolitha's oldest sister and brother and their families left Kentucky shortly after the start of the Civil War and settled in Texas, a Confederate state.

It is impossible to know how these two families reacted to Tolitha and Martin's marriage. They may have viewed the marriage of the youngest Smyth to the youngest Hutchison the beginning of a healing process, one that would most easily begin with the youngest of the generation. If so, their mutual Christian faith must have been a vital factor as their war losses were hardly counted at this time. Both families are believed to have been members of the Bethel Cumberland Presbyterian congregation originally established not far from the Smyth farm in 1837. Records of this early congregation no longer exist, but records dating from the building of the second church in 1868 show Hugh D. Smyth was "...worthy to epresent Bethel Society at Presbytery..." This would probably indicate tht he was probably an Elder of the church.
