~John Columbia Scantling~ When Lincoln's call for 75,000 troops reached Logansport in 1861, he was among the first to enlist in Company K, Ninth Indiana Infantry, Captain Dudly Chase Commanding. He was one of the three to conduct the first Flag of truce of the Civil War. This between General Thomas A. Morris at Philippi, and Col. O. A. Potterfield commanding the Rebel forces at Beverly West. Virginia, June 5th 1861. He was commissioned Lieutenant, U S Infantry, May 11th, 1866: 1st Lieutenant, July 1st 1868; Captain, 2nd Artillery, May 2nd 1887; Major, February 13th, 1889. He was retired from active service, October 1st, 1900, having reached the age of 64 years on that date. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on the retired list, April 23, 1904. He married Mary T. Thompson at Baltimore Maryland, April 1879. At Baltimore, MD. Issue one, Philip Leo Scantling, born Feb. 5th, 1880 at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, MD. He was christened Philip Barry (Scantling), but the named was changed in 1891 to Philip Leo (Scantling). His mother was born at Baltimore, MD, May 4th 1845 and died at Washington Barracks, Washington, D.C. December 22, 1881, Buried at Arlington National Cemetery, VA, lot No. 483. Col. Scantling married Ellen Lee of Baltimore, Maryland at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Boston, Mass. January 15th, 1891. No Children. He settled in Washington, D C after his retirement, where his son is now practicing law. Col. Scantling and his sons are Sons of the American Revolution; and also members of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States.
