My Great-Grandfather, Samuel
Oliver Jones, was very ill,
but in spite of that fact, he went out to cut blocks of
ice from the river to re-stock the ice
house.
It was extremely
cold, and in his weakened condition, he developed pneumonia. His
temperature rose very high,
and as a result he suffered brain damage.
In those days there
was a stigma attached to this condition
and a person was thought to be
"Crazy."
His family did not understand the true
nature of what
had happened to him. Sadly, he was left alone
in an
institution for the rest of his life. |
