-----------------------------

Various records spell his name Jamison, Jemson, Jimason, and Jemison. His

signature, on his Revolutionary War Pension Application is clearly Jemson

Vankirk.

According to his Revolutionary War Pension Application, dated September 8,

1832, Jemson served a total of twenty-six months as a soldier from 1776 through

1779. Living in Monmouth County when the war broke out, he entered the service

as a Militia man of the State of New Jersey, and served under General Foreman.

George Tailor was Colonel (and proved to be a traitor by going over to the

British), Nathaniel Scutter was heir second Colonel, and was promoted to First

Colonel after Tailor’s desertion. C. Brooks and Thomas Hun were their Majors,

Kenneth Henderson was Adjutant, Kenneth Hankinson was Captain, Moses Davis

was First Lieutenant and Thomas Cook was Second Lieutenant. Cook was

captured by the British at Sandy Hook. Jemson entered the war as a private, but

having been called out several different times, was serving as a sergeant in

August of 1776 when the British landed on Long Island. He served one month as

a substitute for William Covenhoven of Long Branch. He served two months on

his own account, during which time they captured a merchant vessel belonging to

the British, which he helped to guard. During another time, while serving three

months on his own account at Cranbury, New Jersey, they marched from there to

Germantown, where he took part in the Battle of Germantown, where he was

stationed near Captain Burris’ company of regular troops. He then served two

more months at Cranbury Falls, N.J., and one month as a substitute for Daniel

Harperd. Subsequent to this, he served one month at Colt’s Neck, N.J., four

months at the town of Monmouth, one month at Sandy Hook (Where the guard

was surrounded and over seventy men were killed and taken prisoner). He served

three months at Middletwon, N.J., then another three months at Mount Pleasant,

N.J. where as a member of a ten-man group of volunteers led by Capt. Burris

Lieutenant Shank of the regulars, went down the bay with three ships and ran

among five sloops, boarding two of them and taking nineteen prisoners, whom

were called refugees, or Tories. One sloope they fetched off, and the other ran

aground. He then served one month at Black Point, N.J., then removed to

Middlesex County, N.J., where he served another month as a substitute for Jacob

Holeman at Cranbury Village. During that time, he marched to Prince-Town, N.J.

to intercept the British Retreat from New Brunswick. From there, he was

stationed ay Sourland Mountain in Lorimer County, N.J. Subsequent assignments

were at New Brunswick, Springfield, and Spotswood Village, N.J.

The records of his age were lost in a fire which destroyed his house, and at the

time of his pension application, he knew of no living individual who could testify

as to his service. So, it became necessary for him to find two reputable people

who could testify as to his character and reputation. Copies of these affidavits are

also included herein. It is interesting to note that, while searching for people to

testify in his behalf he asked a local minister (of a German congregation) who

refused because Jemson was of another denomination (Baptist) and would not

attend his sermons. He was awarded $80 per year as a pension for his service

during the Revolution.

Jemson married Elizabeth Welch, who was born before 1774 in New Jersey, and

who died after 1850. Jemson died on December 8, 1836. Their children were

William Madison, Robert, Arthur, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Nancy, Mary, and Grace.

Notes for Henry Van Kirk:

Henry died in March of 1776. His will, written 18 December, 1775, was probated

3 April, 1776. It gives his wife, Sarah two featherbeds, furniture and other household goods, a side saddle, bridle, and other things necessary for housekeeping, a Negro wench named Dinah, the use of that part of my dwelling house that I now occupy, one-third of the garden, horses and cows, and 400 pounds yearly in lieu of dower.

The eldest son, John, got 40 acres.

The remainder of the real and moveable estate was to be sold after debts and funeral expenses had been paid. Twenty pounds went to his son Benjamin’s sons; and to Dority (Dorothy) wife of Thomas Drake; and Jemima wife of Elisha Barton, who were daughters.

An amount of pounds was to be kept at interest by the executors, Joseph and

Benjamin Vankirk with interest to be paid to wife Sarah. Witnesses were John

Barton, John Hart, and Jesse Pettit.

This estate was still being settled in 1841. On 23 October, 1833, Joseph Vankirk,

son of Joseph and grandson of Henry was appointed administrator since the 1776

executors were since dead. On 29 October 1835, it was reported that the estate of

$ 106.66 had increased to $ 509.83 because of 54 years of interest. One wonders

what caused the delay and where the money was.

The fact that, during their early marriage, the Netherlands was involved in a major naval war with England (1652-54) and was about to become caught up in another (1664-67) would certainly have been ample reason for Jan and Majke to undertake the almost incredibly arduous journey through English-controlled waters and across the Atlantic with five small children.

According to the passenger list, Jan, Majke and their first five children, one a nursing infant, boarded the ship "Der Rosenboom" (in English, "The Rose Tree Historical records of the New Utrecht area provide additional information about Jan and Majke. Jan became a major land owner in New Utrecht. He is listed on the assessment rolls of that village in 1675, '76, '83 and '89 as being one of the holders of property originally patented to Governor Thomas Dongan by Peter Stuyvesant.

Marriage Notes for Jan Verkerck and Majke Gijsberts:

St Lammertsekerk where Jan Janse and Majke were married in April of 1651

Three years after the end of the war, in April of 1651, Jan married Majke Gijsberts in

the St. Lambertuskerk (Reformed Dutch) church at Buren. The marriage record lists him

as a "young man of Beusichem," which is a small village near Buren. Sometime after

the marriage, the couple relocated to Buurmalsen, a small farming community on the

river Linge, about 60 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam. Beusichem and Buurmalsen

still exist, and the church in Buren, built in 1347 in which they were married still stands.

There is a plaque in the floor of the sanctuary with the name Verkerk.

The fact that, during their early marriage, the Netherlands was involved in a major

naval war with England (1652-54) and was about to become caught up in another

(1664-67) would certainly have been ample reason for Jan and Majke to undertake the

almost incredibly arduous journey through English-controlled waters and across the

Atlantic with five small children.

According to the passenger list, Jan, Majke and their first five of their seven children,

one a nursing infant, boarded the ship "Der Rosenboom" (in English, "The Rose Tree")

under the command of Captain Pieter Van der Beets, at Amsterdam on March 15, 1663.

Their destination was a village called "Ryker's Niew Town." In fact, they settled in the

village of New Utrecht, now a district of the city of Brooklyn, New York.

Historical records of the New Utrecht area provide additional information about Jan and

Majke. Jan became a major land owner in New Utrecht. According to New Utrecht

town records, dated October 29, 1677 Jan purchased a farm of 25 morgens from Jacob

Pietersen. Later, on December 17, 1677, Jan bought a house and lot in the village from

Mynne Johannes. He is listed on the assessment rolls of that village in 1675, '76, '83 and '89 as being one of the holders of property originally patented to Governor Thomas

Dongan by Peter Stuyvesant.

Notes for Jan-3 Verkerk:

Notes on "The Van Kirk Family " by WILSON V. LEDLEY :

In the early records of Kings County, N.Y., where the Van Kirks first settled in this country, they spelled their name Verkerk. "Ver" is the Dutch contraction of "van der" and "kerk" means "church," so it is quite obvious that "of the church" has no particular geographical designation, such as "Van Hoorn" or "Van Naerden." Since it is known that Jan Jansen, the first Verkerk in this country, came from Burmelzen near Buren in Gelderland, The Netherlands, the name possibly goes back always in that locale. Jan, did not take his surname from his place of birth or residence.
