The Jones Family
The Jones family left their Maryland home for
Ohio in May 1796, in a Colony raised by a Dr. Smith of Washington D. C.
Each family of the Colony deposited with Dr. Smith $300.00. He preceded
the Colony the year before and bought a tract of land from the Siamese
Purchase, located between the two Miamies, near Cincinnati, Ohio, for this
Colony. As there were no railroads in those days, the Colony traveled
overland in wagons, destined for Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, where it had
been planned previously to proceed down the Ohio River to the vicinity of
Cincinnati.
After the Colony was well on its way, stories of
the depredations and cruelties of the Indians became so frequent that
several of the families concluded to stop until the Indians became less
troublesome. The Jones family stopped near Connensville, Fayette County
Pennsylvania, and remained there until the spring of 1801, when they
proceeded down the Ohio, landing at Columbus, a suburb of Cincinnati, May
2nd, 1801.
They remained here during the summer and winter
of that year, while the fathers and sons located a tract of land in the
vicinity, and built a good substantial log house, and in the spring of
1802 the family moved out to it. This new home became known as Mount
Lookout, a beautiful farm overlooking Cincinnati.
The four sons of the Jones family settled
later in Franklin County, Indiana. near
Brookville, and they with their sons became successful farmers.
1. The parents, Philip(1) and Elizabeth Dowdon
Jones,
died at Mount Lookout, Ohio August 20, 1828 and October 1, 1831 respectively.
They were both more than eighty years of age when death came. They left
numerous descendants now living in Ohio, Indiana, and Iowa
A copy of the Jones Family Bible is in the
possession of Zachary Taylor Jones, a grandson of Abraham Jones now living
at College Corner, Ohio.

Philip Jones
(2), my grandfather, was born in Maryland, February 18, 1789. He was the
eighth child of
Philip and Elizabeth Dowdon Jones. He was a soldier in the War of 1812 and
was in General Hulls Surrender. He with his parents came to Ohio in May,
1801. He later went to Franklin County Indiana, where he bought land of
the Government.
Sarah Crosley
was born in Pennsylvania, January 18, 1797, and with her fathers family,
moved near Columbus, Ohio, 1809, where she lived and taught school until
May 25,1816, when she married Philip(2) Jones, and went with
him to this farm where they raised their family and died.
I,(Sarah E. (Jones), Furry) with by brother and
daughter visited this home in 1902. It was the most beautiful place I ever
saw. The house was made of frame and brick, the brick being brought from
England. The brick part was the house their family was raised in. My
father's youngest brother owned the farm at this time.
The children
of this couple (Philip(2) and Sarah Crosley Jones) were six:
1. Eliza (3) Jones
born 18th March 1821, She died when about twelve years.

born.

Born Jan. 13th, 1845.
2. Ezekiel (4) Jones
Born Sept. 23rd, 1847
3. Ross (4) Jones
Born 1849 and died when small.
The mother (Mary (Gibson) Jones) died when Ross was born in
Decatur County near Greensburg, Indiana. James Dowden Jones was
then married to Hester Jones, the widow of Noah Ross of Indiana, who
had one daughter, Mary Sussana Ross,
Born Feb.@, 1847 and died Feb 2 1891, at Mt Auburn.
James Dowdon (3) Jones married
the second time to Hester (Jones) Ross, near Vinton, Benton County,
Iowa. She was the daughter of Hugh and Mary Douglas Jones. She was
born in Indiana, Dec. 9, 1830, and in 1853 came to Iowa and was married to
James D. Jones. I think in 1856, and soon after their marriage moved back
to Indiana, where he owned a farm and where they lived for two years.
They then moved back to Iowa. They bought a farm
in Benton County north of Vinton, only lived there for a short time, then
moved near Center Point, where he had previously bought a Sawmill. He had only
lived there about two years when he enlisted. He did not pass the
examinations and was later drafted. In riding in all kind of weather settling up his
business and moving the family back to his Bear Creek farm he contracted a
severe cold that soon developed into pneumonia, and was very sick when
time came for him to go with his regiment. He was unconscious when put on the train at
Cedar Rapids. Was put in a hospital at Camp McClellen. Was there
three months and was discharged on account of disability. He only had one
lung. On his return home he moved the Saw mill up to his
farm and continued to live on this place till the Spring of 1880 when
he sold the farm and moved to Holt County Nebr. Here he took a Homestead and lived seven or eight
years. He disposed of his property there and went to
Missouri with a view of buying land. He took sick after going there, and in
a very short time went to Mt. Auburn, Iowa, to be with his wife at the
home of their daughter. He got there (to Mt. Auburn, Iowa ) Thurs.
Morn, May 16,th and died Sat. eve, May 18,1895.

"Clear Drinking Manor" Is eight
miles from Washington D C, just north of Chevy Chase, Montgomery
County., Maryland. There is only twenty acres left of the original
tract in the Jones name, a descendant of the family. The names
Collumbia, Williams, and Nash are found in The Colonial records of
Maryland. I have not a complete list of those who went to Ohio as Dr.
Smith's Colony, but from such information as I have I am of the
opinion that William Collumbia, Zachariah Williams, and John Nash were
among the number, and were sweathearts of Sussannah, Sarah, and Martha
Jones respectively, whom they afterwards married at Connellsville,
Pennsylvania in 1797 and 1798. The Williams family were connections of
Josiah Parker, who by marriage was connected with the Charles Jones
family. Josiah Parker was a distinguished officer in the Revolutionary
War. In Maryland and Virginia from which States
they came, and if fact all the older cities of Colonial times via
Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Charleston, etc. in which
family pedigree is based solely upon Revolutionary records, has a
social importance .......
[The] Bible published by Mathew
Carey, 122 Market St., Philadelphia in 1912. On the left page of the
picture are the names and birthdates of Philip and Elizabeth his wife,
and also those of their ten children. On the right page of the
picture, there are five names and birthdates of those named. The first
one is John Jones found at the bottom of the list on the left page,
the youngest child Philp Jones. The three next are evidently names of
children of branch families of the Jones family. The fifth name,
William Collumbia is the fourth child of Willam and Susanna Jones
Columbia.
