Historic Navidad Baptist Cemetery

Established November 1853
2240 Vacek Loop, Schulenburg, Texas
Operated by the Navidad Baptist Cemetery Association
~~a Texas non-profit corporation~~

The cemetery known as the Navidad Baptist Cemetery is located about a mile and a half from the long-vanished town of Lyons which was situated in the south southeast corner of Fayette County in the Thomas Taylor League, bounded by the Wm. Hensley, D. F. Donalson, Samuel Young, and M. Sandifier tracts and the Lavaca County line to the south, the J. Burnham League and Colorado County to the east, the J. Bell tract to the west and the K. Crier and L. Bostick Leagues due north.   On November 5, 1853 the tract of three or four acres off the east end of the T. Taylor League, lying in the fork of the Navidad, commencing at S. F. Hazel’s Spring Branch on the old Taylor and Burnham League land; running North 200 varas; thence West to the head of said Spring Branch; thence down said branch to the place of beginning; was granted, bargained, sold and conveyed for the sum of ten dollars. The indenture was made and entered into between Seth F. and Caroline M. Hazel and David O. Barton, Thomas D. Pennington and Lee Green, Trustees of the Navidad Baptist Church and Cemetery for said Church and their successors forever. Due to its proximity to Lyons, the cemetery also served residents of Lyons who were not members of the Navidad Baptist Church.

Church and burial records have not been located and it is unknown whether records have ever existed. Of the 120 estimated gravesites, 82 are identified, 12 are unidentified, and the location and names for the remainder of the sites are uncertain. Of the 82 identified markers, 73 of those burials are prior to 1900.  Many additional gravesites have been detected, but are unidentified at present.

The Navidad Baptist Cemetery Association for the preservation, restoration and maintenance of the historic cemetery was organized May 6, 2005 at a meeting held in the Schulenburg Community Center, 711 Anderson Street. There were 24 in attendance.
