James Washington Winters, Sr. fought in the War of 1812 with Sam
Houston. Sam Houston told the Winters of the beautiful new
wilderness of Texas, encouraging them to be a part of a brave new
nation on the border of the United States. James Washington Winters and his family joined the Vehlein Colony, a Stephen F. Austin colony, with promises of Spanish land grants for each household. James Winters, as well as his sons and other relatives, were granted Spanish land grants in the area near Old Waverly, Montgomery County, Texas. James Washington Winters, Jr., and two of his brothers, joined the Texas Revolutionary Army and fought in the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. The balance of the Winters family supported the war efforts by providing food and supplies to the Texas Army. For their bravery and sacrifices, the Winters family were granted Texas land grants of 640 acres each. We are descendants of this brave Winters family. James Washington Winters was a Provost Marshall during the Civil War, started the Texas Veterans Association, and staked the San Jacinto Battleground for the builders of the park. His daughters were charter members of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Our newest family members are eighth generation native Texans.
