THORNTON came from England, inside the Yorkshire. Actually the earliest family lores might have pinpointed it to a town called Barnsley, in the West Riding Yorkshire, between Huddersfield and Leeds.

Yorkshire is a maritime county of England, with its coast bold and rocky, the valley vested over the centre. Agricultural, manufacturing and mining are the main areas in Yorkshire. It was claimed that Thornton family may have some origins from this area, especially the parish of Silkstone and surroundings.

A granddaughter of the recorded ancestor, Sarah (aka Sallie) Thornton, wrote a short note that have been passed down a few generations before it arrived on the hands of this family researcher, Darls. The transcription of the note was done with difficulties is shown below:

"Samuel Thornton Esq. of Barnsley, Co. York, England, woollen manufacturer was father of
Samuel Thornton Esq., who was born at Barnsley, Co. York, emigrated from England in 1812, and arrived as one of the earliest emigrants in Sydney, N.S.W. a free immigrant in 1814, and obtained grants of land from the Colonial government. He met Sarah Madden (who was born in London, and died in 1827) and died in 1842 leaving issue - Geo. Thornton, etc.

Crest used - issuing out of a ducal 'coronet' a lion's head."

At this stage, there are not much stuff which could be added into this to give some idea of what it was like back then, what they did, how they lived, etc. One day it would be done!

Anyhow, this Samuel Thornton (the son of the aforementioned Samuel, the woollen manufacturer) had seven children who have spread out in Sydney, leaving him with numerous descendants.
