Stick, David, Roanoke Island, The Beginnings of English in America, University of North Carolina Press, 1983.  This is an excellent account of the earliest exploration even of Greenland and Iceland by Norsement and Vikings up through the landing of the first truly permanent colony of Englishmen in Virginia.  This very detailed account was written to laymen by a historian who enjoyed familiarity with the historical documents and legends of our ancestoral settlement efforts.
