Descendants of Robert Coleman of Nansemond County Virginia 1684-1930

Chapter 22:  Descendants of Charles Coleman (1744-1824) and Mary Roundtree of Edgecombe County, North Carolina, and later, Greene County, Alabama

It is not clear just who were the parents of Charles Coleman (1744-1824) who married Elizabeth Roundtree.  It may be that he is the same Charles Coleman who appears in one or more of the deeds listed below:

In Deed Book 13, on page 135, we find Elizabeth Roundtree of Wayne County, N.C.
deed to Charles Coleman reserving to herself a life-time interest in the land,
   15 Apr 1809. [Watson, 1969, p. 83]
In Deed Book 17, on page 12, we find Charles Coleman of Cahawba Co, AL
sold land granted to him on 09 Mar 1760. Doc date 30 Jun 1819.
In Deed Book 21, on page 86, we find Charles Coleman was son of
Robert Coleman, deceased, whose father was
Robert Coleman, deceased. doc date 11 Nov 1833.
[Watson, 1969, p. 219]

If these are our subject, then he was the son of a Robert Coleman who was son of a Robert Coleman.  Thus, one could jump to the conclusion that our subject is the grandson of Robert Coleman, I of Nansemond County Virginia.  I have seen it shown that way and can neither dispute nor prove the connection.  If it were true, why did Charles Coleman not get mentioned in the will of Robert Coleman, II?

Let us further consider the timeline for this hypothesized connection.  We need a Robert Coleman born about 25 to 45 years prior to Charles' birth in 1744, which works out to a period of about 1700 to 1720, more or less.  Since Robert Coleman, II was born in 1676, he was clearly too early and since Robert Coleman, IV was born c1734, he was clearly too late to be the father of Charles.  Therefore, based on the timeline here assembled in Chapters 2 and 3 of this book, I submit that Robert Coleman, III b. 1705, is the most likely candidate to be the father of the Charles Coleman of interest here.  But what are the odds this was true when no Charles is named in Robert Coleman, III's will? It is not unheard of to not name a son in one's will for a variety of reasons.  One explanation is the fact of early inheritance where one child has already realized legal possession of his portion of the estate prior to the death of his or her parent.  Another explanation is the child is going by a different name later in life than was used by the parent at the time the will was written.  This is a frequent occurence.  Even so, I reject all of these notions in this particular instance.

Next, I think it worth considering that the subject Charles Coleman was connected to the Robert Coleman, I through a different son of Robert Coleman, I, possibly a son not yet shown in this book.  There would need to have been a pair of Robert Colemans in the line from this hypothetical son but I can not be sure such did not exist, it being difficult to tie all the references to any Robert Coleman to specific instances in the family tree.

Finally, the other possibility is that this Charles Coleman is descended not from the Robert Colemans from Nansemond County Virginia, but from those from Charles City County Virginia.  Extant in the wills of Edgecombe County North Carolina are two Robert Colemans, father and son, who do not fit in with the rest of the group as I have constructed it in this book.  I first believed these two men to have been part of the Charles City County line documented and claimed as ancestors by J.P. Coleman in his work.  The problem with this supposition is that J.P. himself stated that his group was in a different part of Edgecombe County that became Halifax County.  This county division occurred in 1758, prior to the death of the two Robert Colemans that do not fit.  The problem is that the county seat and court house for the old county lay within the bounds of the new county.  People naturally continued to do business there for a time until a new county seat could be elected or appointed, a courthouse constructed, officers of the court elected or appointed, and regular administrative and legal proceedings could be transferred to the new location.  I have seen evidence that the old county was in no rush to clarify the situation and confusion over the split may have persisted for a generation or more (20 years) before things were properly settled out.

The question then is whether a Charles was named in these two men's wills, particularly the later one, the son.

In the 1970s, there was a Coleman researcher named Robert Franklin Coleman who wrote several times about the lineage of this group. In correspondence to Mary C. "Polly" Yarborough, of Eutaw, Alabama, dated 1971, he writes that Charles Coleman who moved with his sons John and Wiley to Alabama, and died there in 1824, was the son of a Robert Coleman who was the son of the Charles Coleman who died in 1761 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He writes that Charles, father of John and Wiley, had a half brother, Robert who was the author's great great grandfather.

=== The information in this chapter comes from many different sources.  My thanks to all those individuals who filled in gaps in the information uncovered in my first source, an article reprinted by Governor J. P. Coleman in his 1965 work.  The information in this chapter comes primarily from these sources:

  1. Coleman, 1965 pages 436-439 wherein the author records the content of a presentation given to the Twenty Three Circle, then to the Greene County Historical Society, and later published in "The Greene County Democrat", the newspaper in Eutaw Alabama, county seat of Greene County, Alabama.
  2. Hook, 2002, FTM World Family Tree, Feb 2002
  3. Winn, Bob, 2002
  4. Hanson, 2003

From these and many other sources, a picture of the descendants of Charles Coleman and Mary Roundtree has begun to emerge.

From J.P. Coleman's book, pp 436-439:

Bestor, a Baptist Minister and Educator. [Coleman, 1965]

Juliet lived from 1811 to 1859 [DAR record 95982].

After the Civil War the whole family moved out to Orange, CA to join the oldest daughter, Mary (Travis) Van de Graaff, who had been widowed shortly after moving there with her husband and son. The family traveled by way of the land route across the Ithmus of Panama before the Canal was built.  The parents missed Alabama and returned with the two youngest sons some time in the 1870's.

(590) Mary Ann Coleman Travis married Abram Sebastian Van de Graaff on 01/27/1857 at Gainesville AL.  He was born 06/27/1832 in Erie, AL, and died 05/28/1868 at Los Angeles CA.  He was the son of William Van de Graaff and Juliette Ewing. (590) Mary Ann Coleman Travis and husband Abram Sebastian Van de Graaff had the following children:

(602) 1. Juliette Eliza Van de Graaff, b. 12/02/1857 at Gainesville AL, d. 07/07/1858.
(603) 2. Adrian Sebastian Van de Graaff, b. 05/12/1859 at Gainesville AL, d. 05/18/1922 at Birmingham AL,
                                            buried Evergreen Cemetery, Tuscaloosa AL.
(604) 3. William Regnet Van de Graaff, b. 10/29/1860 at Gainesville AL, d. 10/28/1861.
(605) 4. Alida Samlant Van de Graaff, b. 02/17/1868 at Los Angeles CA, d. 07/07/1896 at Tuscaloosa AL.

(603) Adrian Sebastian Van de Graaff, married Minnie Cherokee Hargrove on 07/17/1890 at Tuscaloosa AL. Minnie was born 11/12/1866 at Tuscaloosa AL, the daughter of Andrew Coleman Hargrove and Cherokee Mims Jemison.

Andrew Coleman Hargrove was the son of John Harris Hargrove, who the son of Rev. Thomas Dudley Hargrove (originally from Greensville Co. VA I believe, but moved to Alabama by way of Georgia) and Mary Elizabeth Coleman, daughter of Daniel Coleman and Susannah Harris. There is no known connection between Daniel Coleman and the Nansemond Colemans from whom Charles Coleman of Greene County, Alabama are thought to be descended.

(603) Adrian Sebastian Van de Graaff and wife Minnie Cherokee Hargrove had the following children:

(606) 1. Adrian Van Vinceler Van de Graaff, b. 09/06/1891 at Tuscaloosa AL, d. 03/14/1936 at Tuscaloosa.
(607) 2. Coleman Hargrove Van de Graaff, b. 09/07/1893, d. 01/02/1938 in MS.
(608) 3. William Travis Van de Graaff, b. 10/27/1895, d. 04/26/1977 at Penrose, CO.
(609) 4. Cherokee Van de Graaff, b. 07/15/1898, d. 03/21/1934 at Richmond, VA.
(610) 5. Robert Jemison Van de Graaff, b. 20 Dec 1901, d. 01/??/1967 at Boston MA.

(610) Robert Jemison Van de Graaff was the inventor of the Van de Graaff electrostatic generator.  The early children were probably born at the Travis plantation near Livingston AL, the later ones at their home in Gainesville, AL.

(479) William "Wiley" Coleman was born 03/09/1783 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.  Wiley died on 11/28/1822.  He married Martha Cobb who died in 1864.  Wiley settled in Bibb County Alabama while his brother, John, settled in Greene County Alabama.  Their parents, Charles Coleman and Mary Roundtree went on to Greene County, Alabama with John where they shortly passed away and were buried.

The Bibb County, AL GenWeb site has photos of the grave of (479) "Willie" Coleman located in Centerville Memorial Cemetery, in the community of Four Points, just West of downtown Centerville, AL. His grave stone shows dates almost matching those given above: 03/09/1783 - 11/25/1822.

The only other Coleman grave indexed there is for Sarah Coleman, 04/10/1812 - 08/11/1825, who died just 13 years old. I imagine this was a daughter of William and Martha Coleman.

An additional supplemental inventory of the estate of Wiley Coleman was filed in Bibb County on 07/25/1826, recorded in Administrator's Book "C". The inventory lists administrators Robert Hill, in right of his wife, and Alexander Hill. It then lists children of Wiley Coleman and their spouses at this time:

Robert Hill husband of Martha Coleman, deceased, relict of Willie Coleman,
David R. Boyd and Trecy, his wife,
Rhoda Coleman,
the representatives of Sarah Coleman, deceased,
John B. Coleman,
Penelope Coleman,
Robert Coleman,
Mary Coleman,
Willie Coleman,
Willie J.[James] Coleman,
Martha Ann Coleman
[Gandrud, Alabama Records, Vol 232, pg 47]

James Coleman is listed as an infant son of Willie Coleman, an orphan, pg 229 of Admin Bk "C".
[Note: "orphan" had a legal definition in that period quite apart from its use today.] [Gandrud, Alabama Records, Vol 232, pg 48]

The only next of kin listed for Sarah Coleman, daughter of Wiley Coleman, were brothers and sisters (she being just 13 years old at the time of death). Listed were David R. Boyd and Treece, his wife, formerly Coleman; Penelope Coleman, John B. Coleman, Mary Coleman, Robert Coleman, Martha Ann Coleman, Robert E. Coleman.
[Gandrud, Alabama Records, Vol 232, pg 51]

(479) William "Wiley" Coleman and wife Martha Cobb had these children:

(1313) 1. Theresa "Trecy" Coleman, b. 01/28/1809, Edgecombe Co, NC; d. 12/08/1850 Centerville, Bibb Co, AL
(1314) 2. Sarah Coleman, b. 04/10/1812, d. 08/11/1825
(1315) 3. Penelope Coleman, b. c1813
(1316) 4. John B. Coleman, b. c1815
 (611) 5. Mary Coleman, b. 1816
(1317) 6. Robert E. Coleman, b. c1817
 (612) 7. Martha Ann Coleman, b. 1820
 (613) 8. Wiley Coleman, b. 1821, See Chapter 44
(1318) 9. William James Coleman, b. 1825

There may have been another daughter, Jane Coleman, or one of the above may have been going by the name later, for there is a record of a marriage of Jane Coleman to Berry or Benj. Numan or Newman. [Gandrud, Alabama Records, Vol 166, pg 79, transcribing Bibb County, AL Marriage Book "D", pg 293]

(1313) Theresa "Trecy" Coleman was born 1/28/1809, She married David R. Boyd, [on 09/21/1824, per Early Marriages of Bibb County, a web site based on Gandrud's Alabama Records Volumes and original records in the Alabama State Archives in Montgomery, AL.] who appears in records of Bibb County along with Colemans. David R. Boyd died prior to May 1839, when Treecy Boyd is shown as his widow, and married second George W. Howard on 05/09/1839.
[Gandrud, Alabama Records, Vol 160, pg 62 and Vol 166, pg 11]

The U.S. Census for Bibb County, AL, of 1850 lists family #16 as:

Howard, Geo. W. 51, NC Farmer, $4000 (age 48 per tombstone, b. 1802)
        Theresa 42, NC (age 38 per tombstone, b. 1812)
        Benj B. 17, AL (b. c1833)
        Martha R. 16, AL (b. c1834)
        Mary E. 8, AL (b. c1842)
        Wiley G. 2, AL (b. c1848)
        Rady J. 8/12, AL (b. 1849)
Barratt, Lewis 24, SC laborer

From the above, it appears that (1313) Theresa "Trecy" Coleman Boyd Howard and first husband, David R. Boyd, had these children:

(1378) 1. Benjamin B. Boyd, b. c1833, Bibb Co, AL
(1379) 2. Martha R. Boyd, b. c1834, Bibb Co, AL

From the above, it appears that (1313) Theresa "Trecy" Coleman Boyd Howard and second husband, George W. Howard, had these children:

(1380) 3. Mary E. Howard, b. c1842, Bibb Co, AL
(1381) 4. Wilie G. Howard, b. c1848, Bibb Co, AL
(1382) 5. Rady J. Howard, b. c1849, Bibb Co, AL

Theresa died 12/08/1850 at the age of 41 years. Her grave is in the Centerville Memorial Cemetery, west of Centerville, in Bibb Co, AL. It reads:

Theresa, daughter of Wilie and Martha Coleman, Consort of George W. Howard, born 28 Jan 1809 in Edgecombe County, NC, departed this life 8 Dec 1850, an affectionate wife, kind and indulgent neighbor, and true Christian.
Next to her lies her first husband, David R. Boyd, 3/30/1802 - 8/12/1835.

Though there is no known connection, there was a John R. Coleman who died in Bibb County, AL with a large estate valued at $16751.80. Heirs listed were:

Grayfield Gosie, in right of wife Sally Coleman,
Robert Coleman
Daniel Coleman
William Coleman, in right of wife Elizabeth Coleman,
(two Colemans married in this case)
Charner Colvin in right of wife Mary Coleman,
John G. Coleman,
Giles C. Coleman,

[Alabama Records, Vol 180, by Gandrud, pg 50]

Leyton Upchurch married Nancy Coleman 1/20/1831.
[Alabama Records, Vol 20, by Gandrud, pg 77]

Sarah "Sally" Coleman Gosa, 1791-1852, tombstone was recorded. In 1850, she was 56, born in SC.
[Alabama Records, Vol 69, pg 15.] So, it appears (1314) Sarah Coleman was born in 1791, married Grayfield Gosa, and died in 1852.

(611) Mary Coleman was born 1816.  On 02/29/1832 Mary Coleman married Jacob Mayberry.  Jacob was born 01/03/1786 and died 12/24/1851.

The above marriage was recorded in Greene County, AL, the next day, 03/01/1832. Creswell, M.G., officiated.
[Gandrud, Alabama Records, Vol 232, p 18; Vol 20, p 85]

Mary was daughter of Wiley and Patsey Coleman. Apparently Martha Cobb, wife of Wiley Coleman, also was known by the name Patsey.

(611) Mary Coleman and husband Jacob Mayberry had this child:

(614) 1. Jacob Dennis Mayberry, b. 06/24/1844, d. 06/29/1921

Side Note 1:
From the ALGenWeb Greene County Web Site under a link entitled "Who were the First Families of the County?" is found recorded early names appearing in court records that may be related to our Colemans from Nansemond County Virginia.  Included are these facts:

Full Name of Person Date in Co. Record Source Notes
(477) Coleman, Charles 01 Dec 1823 Land Record Old St Stephens Land Office
(477) Coleman, Charles 28 Jan 1824 Will Probate The Deceased; A Rev. War Soldier
(479) Coleman, John 28 Jan 1824 Will Probated Adult Son of Deceased

It is worthy of note that there were two Charles Colemans in Greene County, AL in 1823.   Charles P. Coleman, not a descendant of Robert Coleman of Nansemond County, VA; may easily be confused with (477) Charles Coleman who married Mary Roundtree.  In order to clarify the two, I cite this brief synopsis of Charles P. Coleman as given on page 71 of J. P. Coleman's work:

CHARLES P. COLEMAN, SON OF THOMAS COLEMAN

Born, Halifax County, North Carolina, October 4, 1762. Died, Greene County, Alabama, December 27, 1850.

Revolutionary soldier. According to the records in the National Archives, he enlisted in Lincoln County, North Carolina, June, 1780. Discharged April, 1782. Was in the battles of Cowan's Ford, Guilford Court House and Eutaw Springs.

He moved to Georgia in 1789, to Kentucky in 1806, to Mississippi territory in 1812, and to Alabama in 1818.

He was married to Fanny Mobley in Greene County on March 8, 1829, at the age of 67. Fanny was then 45 years of age, so his children, John R. Coleman and Mrs. Judith Person, wife of David Person, must have been by a previous marriage.

It may be that (485) Charles Coleman, son of (477) Charles Coleman and Mary Roundtree, is the Charles H. Coleman who married Priscilla Ann Hutton, 02/14/1828 in Greene Co, AL.
[Gandrud, Alabama Records, Vol 17, pg 72, per Vol 120, pg 51.]

The estate of Charles H. Coleman, deceased 184-, as excerpted by Gandrud, Vol 120, pg 51, lists his widow, Priscilla Ann Coleman, and children:

Martha A. who married Moses H. Person, had child Edward Coleman Person;
Acquilla H. Coleman,
John R. Coleman,
Permellia E. Coleman,
Charles C. Coleman

John, Permellia, Charles and Edward are listed as minors in Greene County, AL July 3, 1848.
[Gandrud, Alabama Records, Vol 120, pg 51.]

Priscilla probably had a brother Acquilla Hutton, who is listed with Charles H. Coleman, Samuel T. Cherry, Robert Craig, and William D. George as appraisers of the William McNeese estate on 03/12/1838, Book "D".
[Gandrud, Alabama Records, Vol 180, pg 67.]

Priscilla is listed without her husband, Charles Coleman, in the 1850 U.S. Census of Greene County, AL, pg 267A, family #455, but with these children:

1. Aquilla b. c1832, AL, probably named for his uncle, Aquilla Hutton
2. John R. b. c1834, AL
3. Permelia b. c1837, AL
4. Charles C. b. c1839, AL

John R. Coleman had a son John G. Coleman who married Miss Elizabeth Coleman on 11/03/1841, Jeremiah Pearsall, minister of the gospel, presided. John was 34 born in SC, Elizabeth was 22 born in GA.
[Gandrud, Alabama Records, Vol 120, pg 11.]

Permelia Coleman, above, married Macklen Nusom (Newsome) Cockrell, son of Nathan Cockrell and Nancy Williams of Eutaw. Macklen was born 1/29/1830 and served as a private in the CSA. Macklen, from Eutaw, AL, enrolled in the Univ. of AL in 1847 and listed in class of 1848. He engaged in planting. He died 10/08/1887.
[Gandrud, Alabama Records, Vol 180, pg 14.]

It may be that (1318) William James Coleman, b. 1825, who was listed as an orphan, infant son of Wiley Coleman after Wiley's death in 1824, may be that James W. Coleman who married Christina Horne 09/19/1855 with Daniel Ward, M.G., officiating, as recorded in Bibb County, AL Marriage Book "E", pg 124.
[Gandrud, Alabama Records, Vol 232, pg 91.]

There was an Isham Jefferson Coleman in Bibb County, AL who married Mary Elizabeth Ray, on 11/27/1823. He was born 10/16/1803 in Virginia, she in Georgia in 1807. He was the son of Isham Coleman and Ann "Emily" Roper of Dinwiddie County, VA. But Isham and Emily died and were buried in Hancock County, Georgia. Mary Ray was the daughter of William and Elizabeth Ray, who show in the 1850 Census in Taladega, AL, family no. 1056 in the home of William Lowry. In 1850, Isham had a brother, John Goodwin Coleman who died in Hancock Co, GA. The two brothers settled an estate and were living in Hancock Co, GA prior to 1823. Mary Elizabeth Ray Coleman died in Columbia, Louisiana in 1857. Isham Jefferson Coleman and Mary Elizabeth Ray of Bibb Co, AL had these children:

1. William Gooden Coleman, (not found in 1850 Jackson Parish, LA Census)
2. Martha Elizabeth Coleman,
3. Frances Marilla Coleman, b. 1829, married William Unknown,
4. John Coleman (does not appear in 1850 Jackson Parish, LA Census),

6. Mary Coleman, b. 1836
7. Sarah Aldine Coleman, b. 1837, d. bur. Ebenezer Cem., LA, married Samuel Horn.
[coincidentally, a James W. Coleman married Christianna Horne, 09/19/1855, in Bibb Co, AL]
8. Georgia Ann Coleman, b. 1838
9. Martin Coleman, b 1841
10. Horacie Coleman, b 1843, appears as Orasha in 1850 Census of Jackson Par., LA
11. Louisiana "Lucy" Coleman, b 1844, d. 01/27/1896, bur. Silann, LA Cem.,
   married Newton H. Hagler
12. Louizia "Louisa or Lousa" Coleman, b. 1849
13. Alice Ray Coleman, b. 09/27/1853, d. 05/07/1924, mar. 05/02/1880 to Unknown Bumpas.
[Gandrud Alabama Records, Vol 160, pg 95.]

One website also listed these marriages of Colemans in Bibb County before 1825:

While at the Library of Congress, I found this in the

Daughters of the American Revolution - Lineage Book 96:

"MRS. ALICE COLEMAN McDOWELL. 95982

----------- J.P. Coleman, 1965 reprints an article taken from the Eutaw Democrat in his book and then makes these remarks following it:
The foregoing newspaper article is an excellent report on those
Colemans in Greene County Alabama, who migrated there from Edge-
combe County, North Carolina. They were descended from Robert
Coleman of Nansemond County, Virginia, and his sons or grandsons,
William Coleman and Robert Coleman. The Nansemond County records
have been destroyed and the particular genealogy of that County can
only be put together from fragmentary sources.
I wish to pay special tribute to Mr. James Samuel Coleman, men-
tioned in the above article, who died December 19, 1963. Early in
my efforts to locate the history of the Colemans I went to Eutaw,
Alabama, met Mr. Coleman, and had a most delightful visit with him,
including a visit to the beautiful cemetery at Grassdale. Later he
gave me a copy of his autobiography, which my secretary typed.
This was a most interesting life story and ought to be published.

Miss Mary Ellen Coleman, sister of James Samuel Coleman, kept up
a keen interest in genealogy. I once ran across some of her
writings at the book store of The Genealogical Publishing Company
in Baltimore. I purchased them and gave them to her nephew, Judge
James S. Coleman, now of the Alabama Supreme Court. The history of
this large and able family would afford sufficient material for a
     book within itself.

What a resource J.P. Coleman found! And if only I could obtain it for building the facts to be recorded in this book! ============================================

Post 5646 on Coleman Family Forum: On the Lauderdale Co, MS 1870 Census are the family of 52 year old Robert E. Coleman, b. NC (p. 23, fam 44) and the family of 36 year old Thomas W. Coleman, b AL (p. 47, fam 421). In March 1870 these two men made a loan of $100 to my gggfather Jeremiah F. Johnson and his son-in-law John W. Mooney. We think these families were related.

Also listed on the 1870 census, p. 23, family 43 (next door to Robert E. Coleman?) is the family of Lee and Virginia Shackleford. Virginia was the oldest daughter of Rev. James Newman, and the niece of Jeremiah F. Johnson's wife Harriet Newman, so our connection to the Colemans may be through the Newmans.

Post 5660:

My father had a brother named Robert E. Coleman or Robert E. Lee Coleman born 2/3/1902 died 8/5/1921.  Could this be the same, They came from N.C. o[r] S.C. but the father of him was named William Thomas Coleman. Let me know if you have heard of them.

In a personal post to me, dated 31 Jan 2001, Shirley posted this info.

My great-grandmother, their youngest child, was born in 1849 in Miss. They were in Bienville Parish, LA when the 1850 Census was taken. Their children were James J., Sirena A., William A., Greenberry, Sarah Ardilla, Amanda, John H. and Eugenia Coleman. The Coleman family was part Indian. In her pictures, Eugenia really looks Indian. A cousin in Texas said his father (son of Eugenia) really looked and acted like an Indian. I don't know where they lived in Alabama.

In 1850, the family of Amanda Coleman Haynie appeared in the U.S. Census in Greene County, AL, family #1328:

Haney, Amanda, 20, born in AL c1830
Robert, 1, born in AL 1849
Richard, 28, born in AL c1822

Next door, family #1327 is:
Coleman, Catherine, 52, born in SC
[Widow of Radford Coleman]
         William, 18, born in AL
         Reuben, 13, born in AL

Family appeared in eastern Alabama c 1835-1845 with Robert Coleman and his wife Sarah. They remain in Alabama. According to census records, Robert was born c1805 in South Carolina.

Also from the 1850 census records, I find John Coleman, aged 80, born in VA living in Robert's household. From that, I deduce that John is Robert's father, born c 1770.

I have not been able to connect my Robert to other Coleman families in the area, nor to the VA/NC/SC lines which you document. If you can do so, I'd love to see the relationship.

What I *do* know is that the Colemans owned a tract of land in eastern Alabama -- which is now part of the Talladega National Forest. There is a Coleman Lake in the Forest (in Cleburne County, AL) and the Coleman family home was supposedly along its shores. Robert's son John Morgan Coleman was a minister and served the Shoal Creek Church there in Cleburne County before relocating to Marion County (NW AL) shortly after the end of the Civil War. The old 'log' church is still standing there in the National Forest, just a short distance from Coleman Lake. Sarah Coleman is buried in the cemetery there -- we have never located a grave for Robert, though he is presumed to be in the same cemetery.

There is a Coleman Harris Family in Sawyerville, Hale Co., AL. I saw him as a child while browsing Coleman pages in 1910 or 1920. Then came across his family with him as head while browsing the 1930 for Colemans. His family is number 284 on page 145, Microfilm Series T626, Roll 20.
