Descendants of Robert Coleman of Nansemond County Virginia 1684-1930

Appendix A:  Collateral Information: Analysis of Colemans in the 1790 U.S. Census, Marriages, and Deeds in Edgecombe and Halifax Counties of North Carolina

Colemans in the U.S. Census of 1790 in Edgecombe and Halifax Counties of North Carolina

In the 1st U.S. Census, 1790, for Halifax County, NC we find a large number of households with the Coleman surname.  Just south in Edgecombe County we find no Coleman households.  If we rely on what J. P. Coleman said in his book, these Halifax Colemans are descended from Robert Coleman of Charles City County Virginia, not the Robert Coleman of Nansemond County Virginia.  At first, I thought J. P. had it all wrong, but later, as I studied deed records for those from Nansemond County and studied maps of the locations for those deeds, I realized that he was right.  Indeed, the Colemans from Nansemond County were south of the county line.  Since they do not show up in 1790, they had all relocated to other locations.

On page 52, J.P. writes:

The Robert Coleman, later to be described herein, patented land in Edgecombe County in 1756.  He was in that part of Edgecombe which later became Halifax County, whereas the descendants of Robert Coleman of Nansemond lived in an entirely different section of the original Edgecombe, which then covered not only its present area but parts of other present-day counties, Wilson, for example.

A careful study of the locations cited for the deeds of Nansemond County Colemans does support J. P. Coleman's statement that they lived in that part of Edgecombe County that remains Edgecombe County today.

Kader Coleman, who had married in 1763, was not listed in 1790 in Halifax County, NC.  He had been in Halifax when married and buying land in 1763 and again when he and his wife Susannah sold land in 1772.  My next account of them is selling land in Fairfield Co. SC in 1785, but when it was purchased and when they left NC to relocate to SC is not clear.  Until proven otherwise, I would like to assume they relocated in 1772 making them the first Colemans in Fairfield County, SC.  This is contradicting a statement by J.P. Coleman that Robert Coleman of Halifax County, VA (of the Amelia line) was the first in Fairfield Co. SC with a land purchase in 1775.  To be true, this would be like saying Jennie I. Coleman did not know the Colemans she wrote of had followed a cousin, Kader Coleman, to this area where he had been living for three years by the time of their arrival.  This is quite possible since J.P., p. 35, quotes her as saying there was a large family of Colemans who came to the Fairfield District, but she only knew of three brothers.  From the 1790 U.S. Census, it may be seen that indeed there were quite a number of Coleman households in that small county of Halifax, NC.  No doubt there was a growing need for the group to split and for a "large family" of them to relocate elsewhere.  The strength of numbers and their success in Halifax meant they would have a good chance of making a successful new start elsewhere with more land to spread across.  So, my speculation, and there is no way to prove or disprove it at this time, is that Kader was one of if not the sole scouting party that identified Fairfield District of SC as a likely place for the clan to resettle.  Thus he had sold land in 1772 and relocated, while his cousins from the Amelia County line awaited word from him and could arrange suitable sale of their Halifax property, before joining him in the area near Feasterville, SC.

Early Marriages of Colemans in Edgecombe and Halifax Counties of North Carolina

The book, Edgecombe County North Carolina Marriage Records, 1760-1868 by Frances T. Ingmire, published by Iberian Publishing Co., Athens, Georgia, records (p.14) these marriages:

Coleman, Aaron E. Bradley, Honor 11/21/1822
    Coleman, John Dancy, Rebecca 06/07/1799
    Coleman, John Jordan, Sally 02/06/1826
    Coleman, Jonathan Price, Keziah 01/04/1763
    Coleman, Kadar Stephenson, Susannah 04/05/1764
Coleman, Robert Story, Sarah (widow) 08/13/1762
    Coleman, William Hedgepeth, Agatha 11/14/1820

For another source of marriages, see The BMD Project containing birth, marriage and death records.

Several obscure references to marriages of Colemans in Halifax or Edgecombe County have been found among the various surname discussion lists now on Rootsweb:

In Marriage Records: Halifax County, N.C. 1758-1872 by David Gammon
we find a few more marriages of Colemans and Jordans:

Coleman:
Gilmoor, James W. and Sarah B. Coleman, 21 Dec. 1844
Coleman, James and Susan Lynch, 19 Dec. 1848
Coleman, John and Sarah Menslo, 22 Apr. 1817
Coleman, William S. and Elizabeth Shaw, 30 Jan. 1819

Jordan:
Brown, Beverly and Mary Ann Jordan, 21 Apr. 1830
Richardson, Mosses and Temp Jourdan, 28 Oct. 1825
Jordan, Dotson and Susan Winters, 21 Aug. 1848
Jordan, Samuel and Rebecca Seat, 20 May 1826

There were no Cohoon/Cahoon marriages in this reference.  There are lots of Jones marriages ( Abraham Jones and Abraham Jr were connected with Robert Coleman of Amelia County Virginia per J. P. Coleman's book).

There are a number of interesting items on Jordan-Coleman connections, but the list became so long I decided to put it on a separate Jordan Information page.

In one issue of Coleman World, it records the only Coleman head of household in Halifax County North Carolina in 1850 is James Coleman.  So all the above had died or relocated as they were all there prior to this time, none of them by the name of James.

There is record of service of four Colemans in the Edgecombe County Militia in the 1750s under Captain Jacob Whitehead's Company. A Charles Coleman is shown as a corporal, and another Charles Coleman, a Robert Coleman and an Aron (alt. spelling Aaron) Coleman are shown.[Clark] It remains to be shown whether these four are the Charles Coleman, Sr and Jr above (son/grandson of Robert Coleman, II) and whether the Robert and Aaron are those two sons of Robert Coleman, III.

Early Deeds of Colemans in Edgecombe and Halifax County North Carolina

Perhaps the earliest deed available is found in a microfilm at the Clayton Branch of the Houston Public Library entitled, Edgecombe Deeds, 1732-1741. Film C82 D04.

In this film of early county records, an index appears for one of the two parts. In this index is found a deed from William Coleman to Samuel Lissums dated 11/2/1739 and proved in August Court, 1740.  Here William sold land on the North side of the Tar River.  No mention is made of any other members of Williams family or Lissums' either.  A Richard Lissums has signed as a witness but no Colemans did so.  Thus, while it is unclear who William Coleman was with respect to origin or where he went, it is possible, perhaps even likely, that this is the William Coleman who is part of the group from Nansemond, as the other group in that portion of Edgecombe that became Halifax would be at some distance Northeast of the Tar River.

In Edgecombe County, North Carolina Deeds Volume I: 1759-1768 Abstracted by Dr. Stephen E. Bradley, Jr. published in 1995 by the author in Virginia Beach, Virginia 23464, the following Colemans appear in deeds:

  ANALYSIS:
This Robert Coleman fits somewhat tentatively with the
rest of the Colemans from Nansemond County who lived in
Edgecombe County, North Carolina. It would have to be
Robert Coleman, II. It is apparent he is an old man at his
death because he names grandchildren rather than children
as his heirs to inherit his property. He is naming his
sons as Charles and Robert and both are named as
executor. If his son is that Robert whose will was probated
in 1795, above, then this son would not be alive when his
will was made in 1806. So, his Executor Robert had to be
a grandson, not his son, IF this is our Robert Coleman, III.

Robert Coleman, III had a son Charles whose will shows sons
Jonathan and Charles, Jr. This Robert Coleman's will
says his son Charles had sons Willie (William) and Allen.
Robert Coleman, III had a son Robert whose will shows sons
Robert, Aaron, Cadar, Stephen, and Josiah, but no William
and no Allen. This obviously does not fit well. Thus, I
am at a loss to know where this Robert Coleman really
fits. It is clear from deeds of Edgecombe County NC that
there was a Charles Coleman who was son of a Robert Coleman
and grandson of a Robert Coleman. This may be the Charles
Coleman who served in the NC Regiment of the Revolutionary
War and who died in 1832 in Greene County Alabama. ??? the father
of John Coleman, the settler, first of the Nansemond line of
Colemans to arrive in that county.]

be equally divided between children or their heirs.

[Stephen was born to Robert Coleman, II and had brothers
Robert Coleman, III, Charles Coleman, Sr., Moses Coleman, I
  of three, and Theophilus Coleman.]

Coleman, William

  belonging to same.  Son: Sampson, remainder of land;
Daughters Sarah and Susannah. Exr: brother Robert Coleman.

Ellen is not named in the will abstract above.]
