Chapter 24.  Descendants of Thomas Jackson Coleman of Walden's Ridge Tennessee

By permission, the text below is excerpts from a book, The Colemans of North Hamilton County Tennessee by Cy Yarborough.
Editor's notes are my additions based on reports people have given me or I have researched - Wes Coleman

(395) Thomas Jackson Coleman, the oldest son of Charles Washington Coleman, was born 6/14/1838, in Bledsoe County, Tennessee.  He grew up in the Walden's Ridge area in the vicinity of Lewis Chapel and the Flat Top Communities.

As a young man around 1860 or 1861, he married Nancy Gothard of Sale Creek, TN, the daughter of James and Susannah Lee Gothard.  Shortly afterward Tom and his bride went to Kentucky to work in the coal mines.

While living in Kentucky, the Civil War broke out.  Tom joined the 17th Kentucky Volunteers, a Union outfit, on 9/17/1864.  He enlisted as a private in "C" Company.  Little is known of Tom's military career since his service is not on file in Tennessee due to serving in another state.  He was discharged from duty on 10/4/1865.

Somewhere around 1866 or 1867, Nancy died.  Tom returned to North Hamilton County, Tennessee for awhile and married Rhoda A. Rogers of Sale Creek, on 6/14/1868.  Rhoda was born On 7/16/1848, in Sale Creek, the daughter of Joel and Ary Gibson Rogers.  Tom and Rhoda were married in Sale Creek.

Cy Yarborough, the author of the original work, did not know where Tom and Rhoda lived the first few years of their marriage and speculated they could have gone back to Kentucky because they were not listed in either the Hamilton or Putnam County Tennessee census in 1870.  They did move to Putnam County in the early 1870's, as one of their daughters was born there in 1873. Phil Coleman provided more details from the pension record for Thomas as recorded later.

Tom farmed while he lived in Putnam County.  He lived in the Buffalo Valley area of Putnam County near his father, brothers and sisters.

Tom and his family left the Buffalo Valley in the early 1880's.  I do not know the exact date they left but I believe it corresponded with the death of his father.  Tom returned to the North Hamilton County area after he left Putnam County.  For a short period of time they lived in Coulterville and Sale Creek, TN, but soon settled in Soddy.  Tom probably settled in the area known as "Big Soddy" in the area of the present Back Valley Road.  Many of his descendants remain in the area.

Tom lived the rest of his life out in Soddy.  He was a lifelong farmer, a well known and respected member of the Soddy community.  According to census records he and Rhoda were at least educated enough to read and write, something many were unable to do in the rural areas during the 1800's.

Tom died 1/3/1909, at Soddy, TN, at the age of 70 years, 6 months and 20 days.  He was buried in the Varner Cemetery, Back Valley Road, in Soddy.

Phil Coleman supplied the following items regarding Thomas Jackson Coleman: Tom's Federal Pension Record (Department of Interior) March 21, 1901 shows Thomas' response to several personal background questions. Thomas was illiterate (made "mark").  Confirms that he was born in Bledsoe, County, but shows year of birth as 1839.
[Coleman, Phil, 1998-1999]

The pension record shows he enlisted at Bainbridge, Christian County, KY on date shown and indicates that he lived there prior to enlistment.  Discharge date confirmed.  Occupation was farmer.
[Coleman, Phil, 1998-1999]

The pension record gives his physical description as 5' 8" tall, 145 pounds, gray eyes, light color hair, fair complexion, and no comment on the presence of marks or scars.
[Coleman, Phil, 1998-1999]

The record shows, in a petition for disability pension dated January 5, 1898, Thomas claimed "a severe attack of typhoid pneumonia which resulted in disease of heart.  Pain in chest.  Pleural adhesions of left side and disease."
[Coleman, Phil, 1998-1999]

The pension records his residences asking for past places lived and how long after discharge- An assumption was made that the list of locations on the pension record were placed in chronological order.  From this, we can partially reconstruct the following chronology and geography (years are approximate):

	circa 1867	Statesville, TN
1868-1870	Sale Creek, TN, second marriage there in 1868
1870- 1872	-- Laurel Hill, TN (note: search of 1870 Census may confirm)
	1872-1874 - Byron, TN
	1874-1976 - Coulterville, TN
	1876-1884 -- Buffalo Valley, TN
Remainder of life in Soddy area
[Coleman, Phil, 1998-1999]

Rhoda died 1/22/1929, at the age of 80 years, 6 months and 6 days. She was also buried in the Varner Cemetery.

(395) Thomas Jackson Coleman produced 12 children, four by his first wife, 8 by his second:

by first wife, Nancy Gothard, bore these children:
(654) 1. Benjamin Franklin Coleman b. 9/27/1862?, in TN?
(655) 2. Albert 'Ab' Francis Marion Coleman b. 3/25/1864, in KY, d. 3/16/1939, bur. Varner Cem. Soddy, TN
(656) 3. Thomas Larkin Coleman b. 9/ ?/1865, in KY ?
(657) 4. James Coleman b. 1866 or 1867, in KY ?

His second wife, Rhoda Rogers, bore these children:
(658) 5. William Jasper Coleman b. 7/08/1869, in TN ?
(659) 6. Robert Elkinney Coleman b. 6/11/1871, in TN ?
(660) 7. Eliza Frances Coleman (Lynch) b. 4/28/1873, in Putnam Co., TN
(661) 8. Charles Washington Coleman b. 3/14/1875, in Putnam Co., TN
(662) 9. Lewis N. Coleman b. 5/22/1877, in Putnam Co., TN
(663) 10. John H. Coleman b. 8/05/1879, in Putnam Co., TN
(664) 11. Phil S. Coleman b. ? , in Soddy, TN?
(665) 12. Nannie Coleman (Coleman) b. 10/18/1883, in Soddy, TN

(654) Benjamin Franklin Coleman, called Frank, was most likely named after his uncle or great-uncle.  His date of birth is somewhat disputable.  In the 1880 Putnam County census he was listed as being 17 years old.  The census was taken in June before his birthday in September so that would put his birth year as 1862.  In the 1900 census his birthday was shown as September of 1864, but this would make him younger than his brother Albert so I don't think this is accurate.  His tombstone reads 9/27/1864 - 6/30/1924, making him just about three months shy of his 60th birthday when he died, yet his obituary stated he was 61 when he died. If his birthday was 9/27/1862, it would have made him 61 when he died, so I think that is his correct birthday.

According to all census records Frank was born in Tennessee, (probably Sale Creek).  He spent some of his early childhood in Kentucky and the rest in Putnam County, TN.  He moved back to Hamilton County as a young man with his family and shortly thereafter met and married Sarah Jane Varner on 8/6/1884, in Hamilton County.  Sarah was born 12/24/1867, in Soddy, TN, the daughter of Hezikiah and Mary Ann Julian Varner and the great-granddaughter of James Varner, the first Varner in Hamilton County, TN, and also one of the earliest pioneers of Hamilton County.

Frank and Sarah both lived their lives out in Soddy.  As far as I know, Frank was a lifetime farmer.  He died on 6/30/1924, in Soddy.  He was buried in the Varner Cemetery on Back Valley Road in Soddy.

Sarah lived for quite a few more years and passed away on 6/20/1956, at the age of 88.  She was also buried in the Varner Cemetery.

(654) Frank and Sarah Coleman had these children.

(666) 1. Nettie Coleman, b. 1/02/1887, in Soddy, TN

[Coleman, Phil, 1998-1999]

When his mother died, Larkin was such a young age his father, Tom was unable to care for him alone in addition to raising two other small sons, so Larkin was raised by his maternal grandparents in Sale Creek, TN, James and Susannah Lee Gothard.

Not a great deal is known about Larkin's life other than he apparently lived in Sale Creek all of his life, he was at least educated enough to read and write and that his occupation was listed as a coal miner in the 1900 Hamilton County, TN, census.

In 1998 or 1999, Phil Coleman related an interesting family legend associated with her death during childbirth.  Her husband was reportedly very prudish and would not let another man view his naked wife.  Consequently, he refused to summon a doctor (male) during this first child's birth with complications.  Catherine died and, presumably, the baby also died.

They had two children, Thomas and Ruth.  She then divorced and married Gabriel Degteroff on 5/17/1971.  Bea was widowed as Gabe died in the mid 1980's.  Gabe was a delightful man of Russian extraction that Phil had met once.  Bea was the only surviving member of the Thomas/Ida clan.  She was living in Georgia in 1998 or 99.

(658) William Jasper Coleman was born 7/8/1869, the first child born to (395) Thomas Jackson Coleman and his second wife, Rhoda Rogers Coleman.  Census records indicate he was born in Tennessee.

Bill grew up in Putnam County, Tennessee, and came to Soddy with his family when he was in his early teens.

He married Nancy E. Jones in late 1890 or early 1891.  Nancy was born 10/8/1873, also in Tennessee.  Bill was listed as a farmer in the 1900 Hamilton County census and as far as I know farmed all of his life.  He and Nancy had at least enough formal education to be able to read and write. Bill owned his own farm and it is assumed it was located around the Big Soddy area along the present Back Valley Road, and possibly down to Jones Gap Road. Some of his grandchildren still are living in this area.

Bill died in Soddy on 2/4/1922, at the age of 52 years, 6 months and 26 days.  Nancy's death date and place are unknown.

(658) William Jasper (Bill) Coleman and wife Nancy E. Jones had five children:

(742) Warren Alton (Sonny) Coleman and wife Doris Wade had three children.

(739) Leonard Grant Coleman, b. 8/6/1897, in Soddy, TN.  He apparently was a lifelong resident of Soddy, and as far as I know lived in the Big Soddy area near where his father did.  He married Mary Gertrude Jeffery.  She was born 11/15/1912, in Hamilton County, TN.

Grant died at his home in Soddy on 11/6/1965, at the age of 68.  His wife died 9/12/1969, at her home on Short Street, in Soddy, at the age of 56. They were both buried in the Varner Cemetery on Back Valley Road in Soddy.

Bob was a lifelong resident of Soddy.  His occupation was listed as a farmer in the 1900 Hamilton County Census.  He continued to farm but also became a contractor, an occupation from which he retired.

The 1900 census also states he was renting his farm at the time but he did, as far as I know, become a landowner and lived the rest of his life in an area known as Big Soddy Road in the early 1900's, now known as Back Valley Road.

Bob died on 11/20/1956, at his home in Soddy at the age of 85 years, 4 months and 9 days.  Mary died on 6/6/1961, at the age of 91 years, 5 months. They were both laid to rest in the Varner Cemetery, Soddy.

Bob and Mary had 8 children of their own, although before going ahead with them I will mention Mary's 5 children by her previous marriage.  From what I understand they were never treated as stepchildren by Bob but as his own.  There names were Henry T. Haile, Nancy Haile (Rees), Martha B. Haile (Madewell), Ruth Etta Haile, and Amon J. Haile.

(659) Robert Elkinney (Bob) Coleman and wife Mary had eight children:

Tom was a well known farmer and carpenter in the Soddy area.  He was a member of Carpenter's Local No. 74 of Chattanooga, TN, Superintendent of Mabry and Parker Construction Company of Chattanooga, and was also a well known Baptist Minister in the North Hamilton County, TN, area.  He pastored most all of the Baptist Churches in North Hamilton County at one time or another during his ministry.
