...."The Last Great Peace Treaty
The last great peace Treaty between the Chippewas and the Sioux
at Ashland [Wisconsin], September 11, 1896.
The bringing together of Sioux and Chippewa at Ashland by the
great showman, Wm. F. Cody, was an unusual event, and an interesting
one to those who are versed in the ways of the Indian.
Colonel Cody may have had in mind the advertising which the Wild West show
received in the ceremonial--he ordered six hundred copies of the local Press
from the compiler of this narrative--but to the Indians at least it was a real affair.
There were two branches of the great Sioux tribes, the Brules and the Ogallallas,
and the Chippewas were represented by Indians from the
four Wisconsin reservations, with Lieutenant Mercer, U.S.A.
representing them, Buffalo Bill in charge of the Sioux, all of whom
were members of his Wild West show.  Mr. Cody and Lieutenant Mercer
had arranged the meeting, and it seems as if pretty nearly every
Chippewa in Wisconsin was present.  There were two sets of interpreters,
who interpreted from Sioux to English, and from English to Chippewa
and vice versa, and two stenographers, the writer of this,
and Buffalo Bill's secretary, who made up the record.
It was September 11, 1896, and there was first a short and
rather informal meeting on the bay front north of the Chequamegon Hotel.
The peace pipe was passed, and the leading participants smoked,
but there were no speeches.
Chief Cloud [Anakwad] of Bad River, representing the Chippewa tribes
opened the formal afternoon meeting which was held back of the big circus tent.....
"In offering you this pipe, I give it to you with a feeling of good will and good feeling.."
