ANSEL AND ADELINE EASTON
1857 - Aug 20, Ansel Easton, co-owner of the Pacific Mail Steamship
Co., married Adeline Mills.
Ansel owned an eighth of the Buri Buri land grant that later became
the SF Int’l. Airport.
Easton was killed in the 1868 when thrown from his horse Black
Hawk.
His Black Hawk ranch later moved to the foot of Mount Diablo and
was
developed into the Blackhawk community.
(SFCM, 10/28/01, p.18)(Ind, 12/1/01, 5A)
The grandson of Ansel and Adeline Easton became the well-known
photographer, Ansel Easton Adams.
ANSEL and ADELINE SURVIVE SHIPWRECK of SS CENTRAL AMERICA;
book:
Underwater Exploration (The Restless Sea) by Carole Garbuny
Vogel
Excerpt - page 14: "... large leather trunk that had belonged
to
newlyweds Ansel and Adeline Easton , both of whom survived the
shipwreck ..."
SS Central America -The Last Voyage
... "Another honeymooning couple, Adeline and Ansel Easton,
arrived at the wharf directly from their morning wedding,
escorted by an entourage of high-society friends.
Addie was the sister of the banker Darius Ogden Mills, who later
founded the Bank of California and
became one of the richest men in the state.
There were other prominent San Francisco residents making the voyage
as well."

..."Black Hawk"
"The black horse, which graces the cover of my second edition,
is a painting by David H. Woods (1830-1911).
... acquired it about 15 years ago from a friend who worked as a
handyman.
He was cleaning out a storeroom for a Pacific Heights lady and she
gave it to him. He then gave it to me.
When I interviewed the lady she told me that it had been in
her
family since it was painted about 1859.
Her ancestor, Ansel Easton, arrived with the Gold Rush, gave up
on
striking it rich at the mines, and became a co-owner of the Pacific
Mail Steamship Co., which brought mail to the miners from the East
Coast.
He made a bundle and bought one-eighth of the old Buri Buri
land grant south of San Francisco for the
purpose of establishing a thoroughbred horse farm.
(The ranch covered the area where the San Francisco International
Airport now sits. )
His next-door neighbor was D.O. Mills, founder of the Bank
of
California. A romance developed between Easton
and the sister of D.O. Mills, Adeline.
The couple was married in 1857.
While in New York, Mr. Easton purchased a horse named Black Hawk
and
had it shipped to his ranch.
The horse caused such a sensation that local people began referring
to the ranch as the Black Hawk Ranch.
In the 1860s the horse threw Mr. Easton and killed him, at which
time
Adeline ran a poker through the painting,
took it down and put it into storage.
The painting never was seen again until it was
given to me.
The Black Hawk Ranch moved to the foot of Mount Diablo and was
eventually sold to developers and is now the small community known
as
Blackhawk."
