"John Elder Born in 1755 in northern Ireland. Died in 1836.
Married ca.1776 to Nancy Rose (b.ca.1755, d.3/7/1846).
He came to Scott Twp, Lawrence Co, PA in 1805 from Bedford Co.
He and his wife and fifteen children were the first settlers in the place later known
as the Jacob McCracken farm, later owned by heirs of William Bender.
They are buried on this farm in Elder cemetery.

BIO OF JOHN ELDER of LAWRENCE CO PA (1820-  )   son:  "William J., of Warren Co., Pa."
    JOHN ELDER,
    [p. 32] one of the best-posted men in the early history of Lawrence County,
  now living in honored retirement in the city of New Castle, was born at
  Slippery Rock, this county, Sept. 2, 1820, and is a son of William and Dorcas
  (Wilkin) Elder, and grandson of John Elder, who was born in 1755 in the
  northern part of Ireland, and was a son of Thomas Elder, a Scotchman.

    John Elder, our subject's grandfather, came to the United States in 1802,
  and settled in Slippery Rock, now Scott township, this county, and bought a
  farm, now owned by the McCracken estate, where he lived until his death at
  the age of eighty-five.
His wife, who was Nancy Rose of Bedford Co., Pa.,
  also possessed a very strong constitution, and lived to enjoy ninety-five
  summers. Fifteen childrenten daughters and five sonswere born to them, and
  all of them grew up to maturity.

  Our subject's wife, Eliza, daughter of James P. Elliott, was born in 1829,
  and has borne him six children, who are as follows:
Margaret, who married S. B. Marshall;
William J., of Warren Co., Pa.;
Lillie, who married Judge J. W. McKinley of Los Angeles, Cal.;
Mary lives at home;
John is the teller of the National Bank of Lawrence County;

Biographical Note:
Miriam Hilton was born in Iran, daughter of John and Ruth Elder who were missionaries there.
She received her BA from Wellesley College and her MA from the University of Michigan.
In 1947, Hilton married Earl Hilton.
In 1974, she authored the first book length history of Northern Michigan University entitled,
Northern Michigan University: The First Seventy-Five Years.
From time to time, prior to Earl Hilton’s retirement, Miriam Hilton
taught adjunct courses for the Departments of English and History.
Over the years, she has also become known for her very active volunteer service activities
in both the Marquette community at large and in her church.
     Scope and Content Note:
The collection contains the papers of Miriam Hilton.
The collection mainly documents her research and writing of the book.
The collection includes book drafts, notes, news clippings, alumni questionnaires,
and transcriptions of faculty interviews (Meyland, Hedgecock, Wahtera, and O'Dell).
Also included are records relating to Church Women United of Marquette and
writings of Hilton's father, Dr. John Elder....

Elder Family Papers, 1925-1979--Finding Aid to Record Group 189
Biographical Statement:
John Elder (1894-1983) and Ruth Roche Elder (1899-)
were appointed by the Board of Foreign Missions to the East Persia Mission in 1921
and arrived on the field in 1923.
Throughout their 42 years of service, they were engaged in evangelistic missionary work,
initially in Kermanshah (1923-1934), the Hamadan (1934-1937)
and finally in Teheran (1938-1964).
Dr. Elder served as the pastor of the Persian-speaking congregations in each city.
In 1935, he was Moderator of the newly formed Eastern Presbytery of Iran and
was elected Moderator of the Synod of Iran in 1947 and 1960.
In addition to numerous other activities, Dr. Elder wrote diverse articles, pamphlets and books
that were published in both English and Farsi.
The Elders retired from missionary service in 1964.

Scope and Content Note:
This collection consists mainly of John and Ruth Elder's correspondence,
reports, photographs and other miscellaneous items, 1935-1979.
The correspondence represents "home letters" and annual newsletters that are primarily outgoing.
The reports include annual missionary labor reports for both John and Ruth Elder.
The photos, most of which are identified, reflect the Elder's missionary service in Persia
....

A native of Pennsylvania, he was a divinity student at McCormick Theological Seminary when he chose to go to Russia

DEATHS
John ELDER
     A memorial service was conducted Sunday afternoon for Dr. John Elder,
 306 Robin Road, Waverly, who died at 6:30 a.m. Sept. 3 at his home.
    He was 87.
    Dr. Elder was born in Pennsylvania on July 22 to
William J. and Louise Clark Elder.
    He was a retired missionary and minister having served in Iran.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, and one sister.
    Surviving are his wife, Ruth Roche Elder, two sons, Joseph, of Wisconsin, and
David, of Pennsylvania, and three daughters, Mariam Hilton, of Michigan,
Alice Leake, of Indiana, and Louise Lund, of Wisconsin.
   Also surviving are one brother, Livington, of New Hampshire, and two sisters,
Margaret Smith, New York, and Harriet Sutton, of Pennsylvania.
  Arrangements for the service were made by Boyer Funeral Home.
