"J.B. HASTINGS, Merchant Here 40 years, Dies"
James B. Hastings, 63 years old, well known and
highly respected resident of Oakmont,
died Monday night at 8:30 o'clock at his home in 131 Fourth street
after a year's illness.
Mr. Hastings had been ailing in recent years and about a
year ago was compelled to avoid active work in his store.
He became very seriously ill on December 9 and was unable to rally
from this attack.
Born in Pittsburgh, the son of John and Susan Hastings, Mr.
Hastings came to Oakmont when a small boy.
Over 40 years ago he started in the grocery business in the
store in Sixth street which was built by his father.
He was a member of the Oakmont United Presbyterian Church, the Odd
Fellows Lodge 1176 of Oakmont,
all Masonic orders and the Knights of Pythias Lodge 141 of Verona.
He also served a term as Oakmont councilman.
Surviving Mr. Hastings are his wife, Mrs. Eva M. Hastings
(nee ELDER);
a daughter, Mrs. Ruth May of Verona; four sons, John L. and Stanley
P. at home, and James T. and
Charles H. Hastings also of Oakmont, and five grandchildren.
Services were held in the family residence Thursday evening
at 8 o'clock in charge of the
Rev. Will M. Hughes, former Oakmont pastor and now at the Deer Creek
United Presbyterian Church.
Burial was to be this (Friday) morning at 10 o'clock in Oakmont
cemetery.
