COLIN ELDER
"Colin Elder was a worthy man.  He occupied the farm of Knock, Sleat,
on a lease from Lord MacDonald, at the annual rent of upwards of L400.
His father came to Skye, and occupied the shop at Isle Ornsay, one of the
oldest commercial establishments in Skye.  In the connection, the word,
"Going to Isle Ornsay to buy tea,"  became a proverb in the district.
On the death of his father, Colin took the farm, and, owing to his social position,
he was of great service to the Church in his day.
"We made his hospitable mansion our resting-place," says Dr. Beith,
"and not a little enjoyed the intelligent converse of a man who,
although living a most retired life, was a thorough classical scholar,
and alumnus of Marischall College, Aberdeen, and well read in all modern literature.
One of his sons is the present minister of Woolwich, of the English Presbyterian Church."....
  In Sleat there were several God-fearing men.
We give the names of some of them--Donald MacClure, a godly catechist;
John MacIntosh, elder; Colonel Elder, of Knock, elder; Ewan MacDonald, Tarskavaig;
John MacKinnon, Ardavaser; John MacPherson, and Malcolm MacInnes...."

Note on Chart for John Elder, born about 1766. Married Margaret MacBean
Children: Jane, Elizabeth, Georgina, Colin, b. about 1798,
Alexander Macdonald Elder, Mary Mackinnon Elder,
John Benjamin Elder.
"This is mention in the "Inverness Journal" that indicates that Colin was most probably in Kyleakin in the 1820s.
We have found mention of him there in the 1830's.

   THE LATE COLIN ELDER ESQ
"The obituary in our last recorded the death of Colin Elder, Esq, for many years farmer at Knock, Isle of Skye, and merchant at Isle Oronsay. He was a man of an eminently accomplished and inquiring mind, who, though far removed from the literary and scientific centres, kept up, in his intervals of business, an acquaintance with both science and literature and was a thoughtful and intelligent student of the aspects of the times. Travellers from the south who shared his hospitality were often surprised to find one resident in a tract of country so remote, so well qualified to introduce them to whatever was worthy of their attention in the district, from the antiquities of the old Scandinavian tower which formed the main feature of his place of residence, and from which it derived its name, to the mineralogical character of the insulated rock on which the tower stands, or from the fossils of the neighbouring deposit of the Lias, to that solitary fragment of the American Flora, the Eriocaulon septangulare, which occurs in its lakes, but which is to be found nowhere else in Britain or on the Continent of Europe. In his moral and religious character Mr Elder stood very high. He took his stand firmly, but unobtrusively, at an early period of the Church controversy, on the side of the ecclesiastical courts; and at the Disruption, and ever since, constituted the chief support and protection of the Free Church in the district. He it was who provided a home for the family of Mr Swanson of Small-Isles, when refused standing-room on the island of Eigg by the proprietor; and for year after year during the protracted period of site refusal, the Free Church congregation of Slate used to assemble and worship in one of his granaries. His death took place suddenly and unlooked for, at a period of life by no means advanced, and in the midst of his usefulness; but he was a good man, who had been effectually taught to make the best possible provision for the inevitable change; and so the call, though sudden did not find him unprepared. Witness. "
