COLIN ELDER
"Colin Elder was a worthy man. He occupied the farm of Knock,
Sleat,
on a lease from Lord MacDonald, at the annual rent of upwards of
L400.
His father came to Skye, and occupied the shop at Isle Ornsay, one
of the
oldest commercial establishments in Skye. In the connection,
the word,
"Going to Isle Ornsay to buy tea," became a proverb in the
district.
On the death of his father, Colin took the farm, and, owing to his
social position,
he was of great service to the Church in his day.
"We made his hospitable mansion our resting-place," says Dr. Beith,
"and not a little enjoyed the intelligent converse of a man who,
although living a most retired life, was a thorough classical scholar,
and alumnus of Marischall College, Aberdeen, and well read in all
modern literature.
One of his sons is the present minister of Woolwich, of the English
Presbyterian Church."....
In Sleat there were several God-fearing men.
We give the names of some of them--Donald MacClure, a godly catechist;
John MacIntosh, elder; Colonel Elder, of Knock, elder; Ewan MacDonald,
Tarskavaig;
John MacKinnon, Ardavaser; John MacPherson, and Malcolm MacInnes...."
Note on Chart for John Elder, born about 1766. Married Margaret MacBean
Children: Jane, Elizabeth, Georgina, Colin, b. about 1798,
Alexander Macdonald Elder, Mary Mackinnon Elder,
John Benjamin Elder.
"This is mention in the "Inverness Journal" that indicates that
Colin was most probably in Kyleakin in the 1820s.
We have found mention of him there in the 1830's.

..."At Isle Oronsay there is a small steam-boat inn, and a commercial
establishment has been
founded there by the judicious enterprise of the late Mr. John Elder.
The place derives its rame from a small island, which lies so close
upon the Skye coast as to form a convenient natural harbour."
