The Charity Southern Baptist Church
of Macoupin County, Illinois was
organized the second Sunday of June in 1849, with the following 8 charter
members.
Zachariah and Elizabeth Waters
Milton and Elizabeth Moore
David and Polly Ann Moore
Elizabeth Moore
John G Chiles
The first church was
dedicated by Elders Zchariah Waters and S.D. Spain.
Reverend Zachariah Waters was Pastor of the church for over 30 years.
Deed was made to C.B.Church 11-15-1858
by Milton and wife Caroline Moore. Description--beginning at N.W. corner,
running So. 27 rods, east 11 rods 8', then N. 27 rods, then west 15 rods to
beginning. Milton Moore sold the land to the church for $1.00. It
is located approximately 5 miles NW of Carlinville,
Illinois in Macoupin
County, Illinois.
The church is in its' fourth building, and
is stil in use today. The first building was a log cabin and it was used
about 8 years--then a snall frame building was erected on the present
site. This building was removed from the church grounds to the Chiles
farm about 1/3 mile west of the church and served as a barn for about 40
years. In 1904, a new building was erected and used until destroyed by
fire in 1959, when the present building was erected. Charity
Baptist Church
is considered a landmark in the area and the community around it is known as
"Charity Community".
A beautiful cemetery "Charity
Cemetery" lies just south of
the church. Samuel Love, first child born to thesettlers of Macoupin
County is buried here. He was
born March
7, 1824, the son of John and Cynthia (Seymore)
Love. He died September
29, 1891. Samuel's tombstone resembles a small log
cabin.
