Grange Grand Master Lesley Laputz pins a corsage on Stella Holdridge Marquardt, the only surviving charter member of the 69-yeear-old Ledyard Grange during anniversary ceremonies Friday night. Mrs. Marquardt, 89, was on of 24 members who founded the local Grange on April 19, 1907. Mrs. Marquardt, who now resides in Groton, was born and brought up in Ledyard. Her home was the old Lamb farmhouse on Rt. 117, recently destroyed by fire.

STELLA MARQUARDT
GROTON-=Stella I. Holdridge Marquardt, 91, of Marquardt Lane died at 7:22 p.m. Tuesday at Lawrence Memboria Hospital where she was admitted Sunday.
Her husband Christian G. Marquardt, died Oct. 28, 1937.
Mrs. Marquardt was a charter member of the Ledyard Grange.
Born in Ledyard, Jan. 23, 1887, she was the daughter of Joseph and Melissa Main Holdridge.
Survivors include a step-son, Arthur Marquardt of Groton, a daughter, Rena Carpenter of Flora, Ill.; 16 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Byles Groton Memorial Home. Interment will be in Starr Cemetery.
There are no calling hours.
Donations may be made in her memory to the Ledyard Grange.

William Leeds Holdridge was born in Ledyard, Conn. He attended grade school in Ledyard. His occupations were farming and carpentry. He married Mary Etta, daughter of Fairfield and Harriet Etta (Brown) Gray of Colchester, Conn. They started their married life and family in Ledyard. William purchased land in a quaint little town of Old Mystic, Conn. Here is where he built their home and had to walk miles to acheive his goal. Mary Etta was a school teacher, a member of the Old Mystic Baptist Church and belonged to the Ladies Aid Society.
William and Mary were understanding, warm and loving. They were married 41 years.

William married Mary Etta GRAY [scrapbook], daughter of Fairfied GRAY and Harriet Etta BROWN, on 28 Mar 1914 in New London, New London Co., Connecticut. Mary was born 5 Apr 1891 in Colchester, New London Co., Connecticut. She died 13 Dec 1955 in Old Mystic, New London Co., Connecticut.

She was born Sept. 4, 1914, in Ledyard, daughter of William and Mary Etta Holdridge. A lifelong residence of Stonington, she married Ray Park Wheeler on April 24, 1938. He died in 1970. She was a member of Old Mystic Baptist Church. She is survived by two brothers, William L. Holdridge of Sterling, Mass., and Henry W. Holdridge of Moreno Valley, Calif.; three sisters E. Odella Bennett of Stonington, Melissa Hildebrand of Old Mystic and Lois St. Pierre of Jewett City. Another brother, Francis Holdridge, died in 1988. PRESTON - Harry Holdridge, Sr., 97, of Stuart Road, Preston, husband of the late Marguerite (Williams) Holdridge and the late Myrna Pearl (VanBuskirk) Thomas Holdridge, died Friday evening at the Mystic Manor Nursing Center.
Mr. Holdridge was born Jan. 5, 1891 in Ledyard. He was the son of James Nelson and Sarah (Finnegan) Holdridge.
Mr. Holdridge was educated in Ledyard school system.
Before his retirement in 1972, he was employed by the state as a farmer at the Norwich State Holpital for many years.
Mr. Holdridge was also a long time dairy and vegetable farmer. He operated a farm in Ledyard for many years. His farm is now the site of Ledyard High School.
During World War II he was employed at the Electric Boat shipyard in Groton.
He was a member of Ledyard Senior Citizens and the Ledyard Senior Citizens.
Mr. Holdridge was the husband of the former Margerite William.She died in 1949.
He later married Myrna Pearl (VanBuskirk) Thomas Holdridge. She died in 1984.
Survivors include two sons, Harry Holdridge, Jr. of Mystic and Ralph W. Holdridge of Calabasas, Calif.; a daughter, Blanche H. Dzier of Mystic; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Church & Allen-Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., Mystic, is in chargeof the arrangements.

Morris married Evelyn STARTZ, daughter of Frank STARTZ and Alice BOGUE. Evelyn was born 18 Dec 1907 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. She died 31 Dec 1989 in Mystic, New London Co., Connecticut and was buried in Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic, New London Co., Connecticut.

Funeral arrangements have been completed for Evelyn M. (Startz) Holdridge, 82, of 1051 Poquonnock Road, Grotton, formerly of Pequot Avenue, Mystic, who died Sunday, Dec. 31, after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Maurice Holdridge.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, at 11a.m. in the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., Mystic. Interment will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home are today from 7 to 9 p.m.
Mrs. Holdridge was born in Stonington on Dec. 18, 1907, daughter of Frank and Alice (Bogue) Startz. She attended Stonington schools.
She was a member of the Old Mystic Baptist Church and the Montville VFW Auxillary. She was also an active member of the Groton Senior Citizens Center.
Mrs. Holdridge travelled extensively until her illness, and she had just returned from a vacation in Florida with her family.
She leaves three daughters, Dorothy L. Smith of Groton, Allice Bouge of Mystic and Dolores McCorkle of Edgewood, Fla, 18 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
