Mrs. Sarah Brown Maine, 92 years old, widow of George P. Maine who died yesterday morning at her home here was the oldest resident of this village, having held the honor since the death of Mrs. Q. Eldridge.
Mrs. Maine was born in Ledyard, Feb. 27, 1847, the daughter of Avery and Annis Holdredge Brown and had spent all her life in Ledyard until three years ago when she moved to Old Mystic to a house owned by her son-in-law, Herbert B. Pierce. She was remarkably active for one of her years. She did her own sewing and other needlework, and last year knitted six pairs of mittens, as well as piecing a quilt. When she was 21 years old she was married to George P. Maine and there were 13 children born of this union.
A brother, Erastus John Brown, with whom she lived, preceded her in death a short time ago. Surviving are the following children: Erastus, Avery, Amos, Mrs. Chester Pierce and Mrs. Joseph Williams, all of Ledyard; Mrs. Herbert Pierce of Old Mystic, Allen Maine of Fitchville, and a brother, William, of Rockville.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Harry O. Williams' funeral home in Mystic with interment in Peckham cemetery in Ledyard.OBITUARY, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1939.
Mrs. George P. Main
Sarah Eliza Brown, widow of George Park Maine, died at her home in Old Mystic early Monday morning at the age of 92 years. She was born in Ledyard, the daughter of Avery W. and Anna Holdredge Brown and spent most of her life in Ledyard, having come to the village of Old Mystic a few years ago.
She leaves three daughters, Mrs. Joseph Williams of Ledyard, Mrs. Herbert Pierce and Mrs. Chester Pierce of Old Mystic; four sons, Erastus Main, Avery Main, Amos Main and Allyn Main, all of Ledyard; a borther William Brown of Norwich and tow nephews, John Godfrey and Frank Godfrey of Mystic.
Sarah married George Park MAIN [scrapbook], son of Timothy MAIN and Mary E. GAY, on 25 Mar 1868 in Preston, New London Co., Connecticut. George was born 11 Jun 1847 in Ledyard, New London Co., Connecticut. Samuel E., the youngest son of Daniel, married Phebe Jane Holmes of Preston in 1895. They were the parents of five sons. They bought a farm on Geer Hill now Route 117 in Ledyard where they first farmed with oxen and developed retail egg, poultry, fruit, vegetable and strawberry route in Norwich, delivering with house and market wagon. My parents were married in 1895 and went to housekeeping in what is now signalled as one of the historical houses in North Stonington. Later they bought what became the Mattern Farm in Preston and then bought a place on Laurel Hill in Norwich where Ray and I were born.
My father worked for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. for 1 year and 9 months when they lived on Laurel Hill. During that period and after moving to Ledyard, my father was a teaching principal in two two-room schools, one out Hamilton Ave. in Norwich and the other in Poquetanuck.
They bought the Geer Hill Farm in Ledyard and moved there on August 27, 1900. My father wanted to move back into the country. He chose that location principally, he said, because it was near a church and a school.
Samuel married Phebe Jane HOLMES, daughter of Grampa HOLMES and Mr. GRAY, on 27 Mar 1895. Phebe was born 27 Aug 1873 in No. Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. She died 14 Dec 1954 in Ledyard, New London Co., Connecticut.

She attended the Wheeler High School as a boarding student in North Stonington. I heard a Mrs. Stanton say once that "Jennie" as she was commonly called was always the fun maker of the group. My mother was the youngest of three children, all living at home at the time. Aunt Nellie was the oldest, living at home with her infant son Ernie. Her husband had died suddenly and she had come home to live. There was one brother in between the girls, always a bachelor, by the name of Renny. .
