THIS IS FAMILY TRADITION AS TOLD BY LILLIAN MAY SCOTT NORMAN.
"Patrick Scott and his oldest son, John and Patrick's brother Owen were the first to come to America. Brother Owen went west and they never heard from him. (Since John died in Scotland, maybe he came to America and went back to Scotland. NAN)
The Patrick Scott family came to America two at a time. They would go to work and save enough money to bring over two more members of the family until all of the family were together in Westerly RI. They came on the boat in the steerage class, because they didn't have the money to come any other way.
They first lived near Burden's Pond on the Bradford Road. When the mother Ellen Nixon Scott came to Westerly, Robert and Peter (sons) bought the home on upper Oak Street next to where the Hill Top Ball Park was. It has been taken down, summer 1985, and rebuilt.
The children of Patrick and Ellen went to the parochial school because it was the only free school in Dalbeattie. Their education was limited, because they started their trade as stone cutters around the age of 9 years and it took 3 years to learn their trade. The average schooling was three years, but they continued their education by themselves. There wasn't a dumb one among them and they were hard workers. When they went to school they would work in the store for a head of cabbage and a soup bone, so their mother could make a soup for the family.
The Scottish people helped each other and when the families would come from Scotland each Scottish family would give them a piece of furniture to furnish their home. They would help the new families until they got on their feet. The families who had an extra room or two would take in boarders.
In those times, Westerly had a number of quarries and Westerly granite was noted all over. It was considered the best granite. A number of quarries were in Westerly. The best known one was Smith's Quarry on Granite Street.
They employed between 400 and 500 workers.
When the quarry workers came to this country, they either came to Westerly or to Barre, Vermont, or to Stony Creek which is past Niantic, Conn.
Most of the stone cutters died of stone cutter's consumption. They breathed all the dust because there wasn't any ventilation. The dust would harden their lungs and they had a hard death.
They worked in a long shed from early morning until 5 or 6 p.m. at night. If they spoiled a stone, they wouldn't be paid for their work."  As told by my Grandmother Lillian May Scott Norman. (NAN)
