Some Descendants of Major Brian PENDLETON

Eighth Generation

(Continued)

2399. William Wellington BROWN (German S. BROWN , Eleazer BROWN , Peleg BROWN , Eleazer BROWN , Ann PENDLETON , James , Brian ) was born 21 Apr 1847 in Chenango, Broome Co., New York. He died 31 Oct 1920 in Noble Co., Oklahoma.

See history in Brown file by Edna Foster, Will's daughter. Info on Will's
children and life comes from Mrs. Foster.
During the Civil War, Will ran away from home at age 17 and joined the Union Navy under the name of Cully Bryant. Because he did not enlist under his real name, he was not eligible for a pension.
He farmed near Frankfort, Marshall Co., Kans., and later participated in the 1893, Chereokee Strip run from Orlando, Okla., staking out land near Perry, Noble County. Was residing there at time of mother's death in 1908, her obit says.
See Caroline Brown notes for 1880 census info re William.

William married Mary M. DORMAN on 1866. Mary was born 20 Aug 1850. She died 2 Jan 1926.

Mary was the mother of Edna Brown Foster, who says little is known about the
Dorman family. Mary, nicknamed Mate, was the eldest. A sister, Alice, later
lived in El Paso, Texas, and a brother, George, in Newaygo, Mich.

The Dorman family probably lived in New York, since that is where Will was
from--unless he met Mary elsewhere during his Civil War service in the Union
Navy.

They had the following children:

Kansas. He moved his family to Manhattan in 1904 to provide better educational opportunities for his children. Earlier, however, he farmed in Marshall County, where he was married. (See Caroline Wood notes). Don't know when he moved to Dickinson Co.
In Manhattan, he became a homebuilder, continuing until his death, according to Edna Brown Foster, daughter of William Wellington Brown, Charles' brother. Bess Brown Neerman remembers him taking daughters with him to his projects. He would say, "Girls, let's build a house." She said he bought land in Manhattan and sold lots as well as building houses.
Bess also said, "Father worked in a nursery. He loved apple trees and
planted them on the farm."
Birth, death info from death certificate. Marriage information is from
Edna Foster, who listed birthday as April 2 and death as July 19. Have copy of marriage license, issued at Marysville, Marshall County. Married 25 Dec. 1875 by William L. Dwinnell. Place of marriage not stated.
She also provided similar information about Caroline Brown and her children. See Brown file in 4-drawer filing cabinet. Info on William's family is also from Edna.
Charles G. Brown residences in Manhattan were at 1511 Leavenworth St. and 1524 West Humboldt St.
Sunset Cemetery, Manhattan, record, page 31, lists Charles, wife Nancy Ann, mother Caroline and son Ira Clyde as being buried there.

"Mr. Brown, who was 76 years old, died following a year of illness.
"Prominent in the growth of Manhattan in the 23 years he lived here, Mr.
