Dr. Main was raised on a farm and educated in public schools. When he was twenty he began the study of medicine under Dr. McCann in Delaware, Ohio. In 1877 he entered the Columbus Medical College and graduated 28 Feb 1879. He practiced at Bryan, Williams Co., Ohio for five years then moved to Delaware, Ohio where he had a general practice.

Joseph & Demmie moved to Tama Co., Iowa, but a short time later returned to Delaware Co., for three years while he farmed. They moved to Jefferson Co., Illinois but was disappointed in the area, turned around without even unloading his wagon and returned to Marion Co., Ohio where he purchased a farm. In 1895 he owned 300 acres of land and fifty heard of cattle and was ranked one of the "substantial men of his communtiy."

Reuben was in 174th Regt. of OVI from 2 Aug 1884 - 28 Jun 1865, discharged at Charlotte, North Carolina. Military records listed him as 5'2", fair complexion, hazel eyes and dark hair. In 1888 he moved his family to central Kansas. After two winters they moved to Butler, Montana, then in the fall of 1891 to the Osage Nation near Pawhuska. After several years they moved down the river near Eli, in Rogers Co. north of Hwy. 20, west of the Verdigris River.
