    Records of Taunton, Mass., refer to him as "mariner." He was a member of the military company there in 1700 and 1710. His death occurred prior to 17 March 1725/26, as on that day his widow, Lydia, was appointed administratrix of his estate (Bristol Co. Probate records).
    He married at Taunton, 26 Oct 1698, Lydia Lenoard, daughter of James Leonard, 2nd of Taunton. She was born

She was born in 1679, and had not remarried up to 16 sept 1752, when she sold land to James Leonard (Bristol Co. Deeds). The children of William and Lydia (Leonard) Brettun, as shown by his mother's will.

    31. Elizabeth-4 Pendleton (Caleb-3), was baptized 25 Jun, 1699 (First Ch. Stonington, Conn.) She married Jonathan Brown. In the settlement of Caleb-3 Pendleton's estate, Jonathan Brown gave the executor, Benoni Smith, a receipt for his wife, Elizabeth Brown, who was named in Caleb's will as "my daughter, Elizabeth Brown" (Westerly C & P rec., iii, 330). This Jonathan Brown was undoubtedly Elizabeth's first cousin, Jonathan-4, born 12 July 1694, son of Eleazer (11) and Ann-3 )Pendleton) Brown, as is indicated by the names of their children and by the fact that they lived upon the land inherited by Ann-3 from her father, James-2 Pendleton.
    No list of the children of Janathan and Elizabeth -4 (Pendleton) Brown appears upon the vital records of Westerly, but the land and probate records of the town give us four of their names as follows:
     On the 14th of June 1756, Jonathan Brown and Elizabeth, his wife, conveyed to William "Brumley" [Bromley] land in Westerly (W.L.E., ix, 218). The index to this record reads, "William Brumbley from his father Brown." William Bromley had married Elizabeth Brown, 9 November 1743. The land records show further that Jonathan Brown and his wife, Elizabeth, made deeds of gift to their sons, Eleazer and Ebenezer, on the 23th June, 1714, and the 3rd January, 1764, respectively (Ibid., v.324 and x,7). They also deeded five acres to their son, "Bryan" adjoining William Bromley's land, 3rd January, 1764 (Ibid., x, 5), and sold land to William William Vincent, 14th June 1756 (Ibid., x, 218). On the same day "Bryan" Brown and Mehitalde, his wife, deeded land to William Vincent.
    On the 27th March, 1769, "Mrs. Elizabeth Brown, wife of Jonathan Brown, represented that her husband had sold his farm and is about to move into some distant land and one third the money said land sold for was paid to Benjamin Wilbur by her Request for her support, and she not having security for same requests that town council that they would receive the money from Wilbur for her use and support in her old age." (C & P. Rec., iv, 123).
    Now on the 25th December 1769, it was voted by the Town Council to pay the Town Treasurer 1 pound 9 1/4d. for "Briant" Brown's taxes out of the money received from Benjamin Wilbur and belonging to Mrs. Elizabeth Brown (Ibid., iv, 136). Furthermore, on the 15th July, 1762, Ebenezer Brown declared "that in the year 1756 he heard his brother Eleazer say that if he never came back he gave his son Jesse Brown to his brother Bryant Brown to do by as his own son & further saith that his said brother died soon after." Elizabeth Brown also declared she her her son Eleazer make this statement a little before his death (C & P Rec., iv, 13).
    Besides these four children Jonathan and Elizabeth were undoubtedly the parents of that Jonathan Brown, entry of whose marriage upon the records of the Second Church of Stonington (now North Stonington) refers to him as "of Westerly". The contemporaneous Jonathan Brown, Jr., of Stonington, son of Jonathan and Hannah (Richardson) Brown, was only ten years old at this time."
    An item on page 28 of Book III, Westerly "Town Meetings," also indicated that another child should be included in this family, as it states that "Jonathan Hankes and Hannah Brown, daughter to Jonathan Brown of Westerly," were married in 1752.

No list of children of Jonathan and Elizabeth (Pendleton) Brown appears upon the vital records of Westerly, but the land and probate records of the town give us four of their names.     James Brown (38), son of Eleazer (11) and Ann (Pendleton) Brown, born Stonington, Conn., July 1, 1696. He died Feb. 2, 1750, age fifty-five years. He married Elizabeth Randall, May 5, 1718, by Rev. James Noyes, of Stonington. She was born July 4, 1696 and died Aug. 25, 1786, age ninety-one years. Internment in Brown Cemetery. His wife, Elizabeth, was the daughter of John Randall and Abigail ___, whose family name and birth does not appear on record. She was the granddaughter of John Randall, the progenitor of the Randall family of Westerly, RI, and Stonington, Conn. His name first appears at Newport, RI from which place he came to Westerly as early as 1667, where the remainder of his life was spent. The Randall land was about four miles northeast of Stonington Borough, known as Angwilla and considered the finest land of the town. These lands join on the north the lands of Thomas Brown (2), and have been in the Randall name as late as 1875. These farms now, in 1906, are mostly owned by Elias Miner (1164) and his sons. The Randall families were highly respected and progressive, ranking high in moral character, and prominent citizens of the town.

    It must be remembered that when James Brown was born the country was in a primitive state, almost a vast wilderness. His father, Eleazer, with his axe, had begun to let in the sunshine in a few places, and to stir the virgin soil and scatter a little seed, making an opening for future settlers. James Brown built his house on lands first set off to his father, Eleazer (11), on the most beautiful situation of any of the lands purchased by the three Brown brothers. This house built by James Brown was located opposite what is now the Union Cemetery. The compiler remembers the old, old house from 1840 to 1845, which soon after was torn down. It was a one-story house, fronting south, with east end fronting the country road. The house and barn were built of native lumber, sawed at the mill erected by his father, and assisted by the older son, Jonathan and James, the subject of this sketch. The barn fell down before the house was pulled down.
    The house contained but four rooms on the first floor; there might have been an attic. The compiler was in and out of these during five years of his boyhood. The house stood on a gradual sloping plateau, affording a most picturesque view for miles around. The land is rich and fertile. The father of the compiler hired the land for a number of years, and on the same the compiler worked for five years. After the house was removed, the well covered, and grounds cleared and leveled off, there was not a thing to show the spot where these illustrious children were born.

  Brown, p266, cites New London Probate Records, Vol. G, p. 179, 2 Dec.1757. Heirs mentioned: Widow Mary Brown (indicating a second wife) Jeremiah Brown, 2nd son (1st son Nathan died at the age of 2); Eleazer, first son; John Butler and wife Mary, eldest daughter; Rebeckah, third daughter; Timothy, third son; John, fourth son; Peleg, fifth son; Comfort Brown and wife Temperance, second daughter; Phebe Brown, fourth daughter; Ruth Brown, fifth daughter.
  The Brown Cemetery in North Stonington has no grave recorded for this Eleazer or his wives. The Stonington Historical Society reports: "Quite often before the 1770's they used only a crude fieldstone to mark a grave. Head-
stones were for the really well-to-do or the well-organized." The gravestones for Eleazer and Ann Pendleton Brown were erected many years after their deaths by a descendant. This could account for Ann's birth date info on the
tombstone not jibing with other sources.
  Stonington Cemeteries, film 3,096: A Mary Brown died 20 Nov. 1785, Cemetery 47, p353. Stonington Historical Society reports this Mary Brown was the daughter of Stephen and Hannah Brown. Apparently she never married.
 Wheeler in Brown section of his book says Eleazer Brown and Temperance Holmes, both of Stonington, were married in 1723. In the Holmes section, he says a Temperance Holmes, born 29 Jan. 1707, daughter of Joshua, married (1) 10 May 1727 John Smith and (2) James Treadway. Joshua lived in what is now North Stonington. [Apparently two Temperance Holmes.] Colonial Families of America, Vol. 4, page 467, says a Temperance, daughter of Joshua Holmes, born 29 Jan. 1707, married John Smith of Groton 10 May 1727. He was born 14 June 1704 and died 22 Dec. 1758. [See notes for this Temperance Holmes, RIN 97.  She died  after 10 Dec. 1761. That was the day she married her second husband--many years after the other Temperance had presumably died.]]
 Brown Genealogy has the same info as Wheeler in his Brown section, but former says info is from Stonington town records. Both say Eleazer and Temperance were married in 1723.
 An IGI record gives a 1 June 1728 (typo?) marriage date, married in Stonington Township. Everett Hall Pendleton says they were married in 1723 and that Temperance was Eleazer's first wife and Mary ________ was his second.
 Mary was on the scene 14 Nov. 1736, according to records of the North Stonington Congregational Church. Rebecca was born 19 Jan. 1735--22 months earlier. That date is from two films on Stonington vitals. Brown genealogy and Wheeler say 19 June 1735. Transcribing error? June became Jan or Jan became June. Assuming Mary was Eleazer's second wife, she would be the mother of Phebe, Timothy, John, Peleg and Ruth (all born between
4 July 1737 and 27 June 1749). Temperance Brown, presumably, would be the daughter of Temperance (Holmes) Brown. Jeremiah and Rebecca probably were the children of Temperance also, but one or both could be Mary's, since we have found no marriage record for Eleazer and Mary. [I will allot the children through Rebecca to Temperance.]

 Regardless, it appears Mary was my Peleg's mother.

 Records of Rev. Joseph Fish of the Congregational Church of North Stonington say Eleazer II was a church member before 1 July 1733 and his wife Mary was received into the church and baptized 24 Oct. 1742. It also says Eleazer II and wife Mary "received baptism" 14 Nov. 1736, same day as five Brown children.  Church records state that Eleazer, Jeremiah, Rebecca, Mary and Temperance were baptized 14 Nov. 1736 and  were children of Eleazer Brown and wife Mary and that Peleg Brown, son of Eleazer and wife Mary, was baptized 16 Dec. 1744.

 [North Stonington Church records also say an Eleazer Brown of Westerly, R.I., married Sarah Die, 10 Nov. 1742. This, according to Everett Hall Pendleton, was Eleazer, son of Jonathan Brown and Elizabeth Pendleton, who probably died in the French and Indian War.]

  Wheeler cites New London Probate Records, Vol. G, p. 170, 2 Dec. 1757. (This doesn't jibe with the tombstone death date). Heirs mentioned: Widow Mary Brown (indicating a second wife); Jeremiah Brown, second son (first son Nathan died at the age of 2); Eleazer, first son; John Butler and wife Mary, eldest daughter; Rebeckah, third daughter; Timothy, third son; John, fourth son; Peleg, fifth son; Comfort Brown and wife Temperance, second daughter; Phebe Brown, fourth daughter; Ruth Brown, fifth daughter.

  A Stonington deed, info from John Henderson, says Lt. John Ashcraft sold a
small quantity of Stonington land to Elizor Brown. This was mentioned in a land record dated 15 June 1717 in which Ashcraft sold a tract of land, less the small quantity previously sold to "Elizor" Brown, to Peter Belton of Groton. The Elizor could refer to either Eleazer Brown Jr. or Sr.

Eleazer married (1) Temperance HOLMES on 1723 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. Temperance was born about 1700 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut. She died before 14 Nov 1736 in Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut.

This is one of my brick walls!
She is NOT the daughter of Joshua Holmes, Jr. and Fear Sturgis. That Temperance Holmes marriages were John Smith in 10 May 1727, and James Treadway in 10 Dec 1761.

  Barbour in his Stonington vitals, v2, p68 (film 2,923), has a Temperance
Holmes born 17 Jan. 1727/1728. This would be the daughter of John Holmes, son
of Joshua Jr. and Fear Sturgis.
  Don't know how Eleazer's wife ties in with the Holmes family. But
  Brown Genealogy could be wrong. Maybe Eleazer was married to Mary all
the time and did not have a first marriage--although he did have a daughter
named Temperance Brown.

Eleazer also married (2) Mary about 1735/1736.

    His will was dated February 9, 1771, and probated September 6, 1771.
    He was for many years a Deacon in the Church at North Stonington CT, the town of Stonington having been divided into two parishes in 1727.
    He married, first, April 20, 1720 (before he was 20 years old), Ann Brown of Stonington. She was born February 1, 1699/1700, and died March 11, 1766. Just two months and three days afterwards, on May 14, 1766, he married, second, Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas and Persis (Cleveland) Hewitt. She was born April 12, 1709.
