NORWICH, CONN, THURSDAY, APRIL 20, 1939
FAMILY GATHERING HELD FOR 50TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY.
Mrs. and Mrs. Warenam Williams Bentley, well known and highly respected Bozrah residents, just over the town line at Yantic, quietly celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Tuesday evening with a family gathering at their home on Fitchville road. Due to the recent death of Harold Williams Bentley of Harris, N.Y., the occasion was observed in a quiet manner.
During the day Mr. and Mrs. Bentley received a wealth of beautiful gifts including bouquets of flowers and decorated cakes, also money from members of the family, neighbors and friends. One cake, bearing and appropriate inscription, "Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary", and effectively decorated with flowers, was the gift of a bakery. Another cake was trimmed with 50 candles. A shower of cards and other messages of a congratulatory nature was received by them.
Mr. and Mrs. Bentley's two sons and two daughters, who are Charles N. Bentley of Norwich Town and Ellie L. Bentley, Mrs. George Foote and Mrs. John Proctor, all of Yantic, assembled at the home in the evening to assist in noting the happy event. Their children's husbands and wives and members of their families, together with nieces and nephews from Rhode Island and other guests, were also present, cake and ice cream were served.
Mr. and Mrs. Bentley were united in marriage April 18, 1889, at the home of the bride's parents. in North Stonington. Mrs. Bentley was Mary Rosabelle Miller. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bentley are natives of North Stonington. Mr. Bentley is 78 years old and his wife is 71. Since their marriage they have resided in Yantic. Besides the two sons and two daughters, the couple has ten grandchildren.
Mr. Bentley, one of the last of the itinerant butchers, continues daily to drive his horse and wagon over a route in Yantic, Bozrah and Franklin, which he has covered for over 50 years. This, it is believed, is a record that Mr. Bentley can well be proud of. During this half century of service the veteran meat man has never had a vacation.
Mr. Bentley has been very prominent in politics, having served the town of Bozrah in nearly all of the offices, including those of selectman and representative. At the present time he is town clerk and treasurer and has held the former office for nearly 45 years. He was first elected town clerk in 1895 and has been re-elected continuously since that date.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Bentley are members of the Fitchville Baptist Church.
